I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 and I would like to upgrade the Ram. Do I have to purchase proprietary ram or can I just purchase ram that matches my system specs? This is the only name brand system I have ever owned and I'm not sure what I can buy.

Check out Crucial.com. They usually sell affordable Ram based on the specs you provided.
