Warrant includes details of club melee, shootings

Feb. 22, 2007

A topless dancer promoter took a trash bag full of NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones' cash and fled the Minxx strip club early Monday, leading to a brawl and shooting that injured three people, one critically, according to a search warrant obtained Wednesday by the Review-Journal.

The search warrant, issued Monday in District Court, was for Chris Mitchell's room at the Silverton casino and hotel. Mitchell, who has been interviewed by police, had promoted a four-day event at Minxx for the NBA All-Star weekend. He had brought in dancers from his Houston-based strip club, Harlem Knights, to perform at the 4636 Wynn Road venue, near Tropicana Avenue and Valley View Boulevard.

Las Vegas police recovered more than $81,000 in cash from Mitchell's room that investigators believe belonged to Jones, a 23-year-old cornerback for the Tennessee Titans. They also recovered a brown cloth bag and two Breitling watches, but it was not clear who owned those items.

The search warrant also shed light on some missing details about what happened inside the strip club before the 5 a.m. shooting occurred.

Cornelius Haynes Jr., better known as the rapper Nelly, and rapper Jermaine Dupri, were also at the club and sitting with Jones's entourage in the VIP section, the warrant stated.

Haynes had tossed hundreds of $1 bills on the stripper stage, an action known in street slang as "making it rain," and Jones joined in.

An announcer told all the dancers to go to the center stage, and about 40 strippers soon were on the stage.

Mitchell told the strippers from his Houston club to pick up the money, which apparently was only supposed to be used for visual effect, the warrant stated.

One of the dancers than took the trash bag filled with Jones' money and a "melee broke out. Jones became irate about the loss of his money, and the fact that girls were in a frenzy, picking up the money at their feet," the warrant stated.

Mitchell took the bag of cash and left the club.

Inside was chaos.

A woman with Jones, Sadia Morrison, was soon fighting with a stripper. Bouncers rushed in.

"Jones became extremely irate, telling security to back off and 'don't touch his girls,' " the warrant stated.

Jones soon engaged the bouncers who were trying to break up the scuffle, according to the warrant. "Jones challenged security and reached behind his back as if he were retrieving a weapon there," the warrant stated.

The bouncers were able to move Jones out of the club and turned their attention to Morrison, who was biting security and screaming. "Sadia (Morrison) picked up a champagne bottle and hit one security guard, Aaron Cudworth, in the head with it," according to the warrant.

Morrison was soon tossed out of the club.

A few minutes later, outside the club, a man with a cornrow hairdo fired a semi-automatic handgun, striking Cudworth, security guard Tom Urbanski and a female customer.

No arrests have been made.

A Metropolitan Police Department source has said an associate of Jones might have been the triggerman. "We think the link is strong, but we haven't been able to verify it," the source said Tuesday.

During an interview with detectives, Mitchell said he took Jones' money because he thought it was for the dancers, according to the warrant.

Cudworth, who was shot in the chest and arm, was released from University Medical Center on Tuesday.

Urbanski remained at UMC in critical condition. He was expected to live, but a bullet severed his spine and paralyzed him below the waist, his father said.

Minxx co-owner Rob Susnar said Tuesday that Jones had come into the club with the shooter and was sitting with him.

Susnar said when one of the strippers started grabbing the money without Jones' permission, he got angry, grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the stage.

Susnar also accused Jones of threatening Cudworth's life as he tried to break up the fight. A melee ensued as Cudworth scuffled with Jones and members of his entourage, Susnar said.

Jones' lawyer, Worrick G. Robinson, on Wednesday reiterated that Jones disputes that account.

"I've tried to explain my understanding of what occurred. I think it really speaks for itself, and I don't have anything else to add," Robinson said. "We will let Metro continue with their investigation, and we anticipate their findings will be consistent with our investigation."

In the meantime, Jones has left Las Vegas, Robinson said.

Robinson has been in communication with the investigating detectives and said Jones will be available to police if they need him.

Detectives interviewed Jones on Monday about his time at Minxx.

Robinson said Jones is not a suspect in the shooting.

Pacman faces felony charges in shooting that paralyzed man

LAS VEGAS -- Suspended NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones must surrender to authorities here to face two felony charges in a strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting in February.

Two other people police identify as part of the troubled Tennessee Titans cornerback's entourage also will face felony charges in the fracas inside the Minxx club, Las Vegas police said in a statement.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger said arrest warrants were being sought for Jones, Robert "Big Rob" Reid of Carson, Calif., and Sadia Morrison of New York.

"They'll be given a reasonable amount of time to turn themselves in, and if they don't, police will go looking for them," Roger said at a news conference.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello did not say if the Las Vegas charges would affect Jones' suspension for the upcoming NFL season.

"As we have stated, his status will be reviewed after the Titans' 10th regular-season game," Aiello said.

Jones agreed this month not to appeal the suspension, and officials said Jones had a chance to be reinstated after 10 games if he adhered to team restrictions and had no further "adverse involvement with law enforcement." Missing the entire season would cost Jones his salary of nearly $1.3 million.

No one was identified as the shooter in a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Las Vegas Justice Court. But police released an image of a man who Capt. James Dillon called a "person of interest related to the shooting." Dillon said investigators wanted to identify and talk with the man, who police said may live on the East Coast.

Tennessee Titans owner K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr. said the team was focused on the 2007 season and would have no comment about Jones' legal trouble.

"We are moving forward as a team and do not expect to comment on any future matters concerning him until his suspension is completed," Adams said.

Like his nickname, Titans cornerback Pacman Jones is watching his NFL career rapidly being gobbled up before his eyes.

To be able to play at all in 2007, Jones would have to clear up this case along with another case in Georgia before November.

What has to be remembered about Commissioner Roger Goodell's initial ruling is that Jones was given no assurance he would be allowed back into the league in 2008. It's becoming more and more likely that Jones is going to have a difficult time being cleared of his legal troubles by November.

Jones' most recent incident over the weekend illustrated the Titans cornerback isn't taking his situation seriously. Whether he was guilty or innocent of any crime, Jones was out with friends at around 4 a.m. and has knowledge of his friends having some involvement in a shooting incident outside of a strip club.

One of Jones' conditions to get back into the league was promising to not be out past midnight. He's violated that provision at least twice. Earlier this spring, he was driving without a license at 12:45 in the morning.

Some have criticized Goodell for giving Jones one of the league's longest suspensions when he had never been convicted of a crime. Obviously, Goodell anticipated Jones would have some difficulty in the cases in Georgia and Las Vegas.

Maybe it's fitting that Vegas is the first place in which he's received a formal criminal charge. In a town in which betting is legal, the odds of Jones ever playing in the NFL again are not very good.

Dillon said Las Vegas police contacted Atlanta police, who said this week they wanted to question Jones about a shooting early Monday after a fight at an Atlanta strip club.

The Las Vegas gunfire occurred Feb. 19 outside a club several blocks off the Strip near the end of NBA All-Star weekend. A bar employee was paralyzed and two others suffered less serious wounds.

The 23-year-old Jones faces two counts of felony coercion stemming from allegations he bit a bar bouncer on the ankle and threatened to kill club employees, according to the criminal complaint.

Reid, 37, who police identified as Jones' bodyguard, faces one felony coercion charge alleging he attacked a bouncer who tried to restrain Jones.

Morrison, 25, faces charges including coercion, felony assault with a deadly weapon and battery stemming from allegations that she hit a bouncer in the head with a champagne bottle and attacked several other club employees with a chair and a stanchion.

Coercion is the act of threatening or physically interfering with a person trying to do something that he or she has a right and responsibility to do.

If convicted, Jones faces a maximum of up to 12 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, authorities said.

The charges are slightly different from those police sought in March against Jones, Reid and Morrison. Roger declined to file those charges, asking police for more information and to identify a shooter.

"We wanted to make sure we had a lock-tight case before we started filing charges and releasing reports," Roger said.

Las Vegas lawyer Robert Langford, who has said he would represent Jones, Reid and Morrison if charges were filed, was expected to contact police to arrange their surrender. Langford did not respond to repeated messages Wednesday seeking comment.

A Las Vegas police report says Jones showered dancers on stage with money from a black plastic trash bag -- an act of tipping known as "making it rain." When two dancers began fighting over the money, Jones allegedly grabbed one by the hair and punched her.

Jones is accused of swinging his fists and threatening the life of club employees who police said tried to intervene, and is seen on videotape punching a man who police identify as his own business manager.

A police report says Jones was seen walking away from the strip club with a man wearing a baggy black T-shirt and blue jeans. Minutes later, police say a similarly dressed man standing next to a palm tree fired five or six shots toward people at the front of the club.

A bouncer who Jones fought with was wounded in the chest and left forearm. Another bouncer, Thomas Urbanski, was shot in the left hand and the torso, and was left paralyzed from the waist down. A female club patron was wounded in the head, police said.

Langford has called the melee "a glorified bar fight," and said nothing linked Jones with the shooting outside. He said Jones cooperated with police on DNA comparisons that failed to show the NFL star was responsible for a bite injury reported by a bouncer.
