If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines...

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colourful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

Windows XP Air

You turn up at the airport,which is under contract to only allow XP Air planes. All the aircraft are identical, brightly coloured and three times as big as they need to be. The signs are huge and all point the same way. Whichever way you go, someone pops up dressed in a cloak and pointed hat insisting you follow him. Your luggage and clothes are taken off you and replaced with an XP Air suit and suitcase identical to everyone around you as this is included in the exorbitant ticket cost. The aircraft will not take off until you have signed a contract. The inflight entertainment promised turns out to be the same Mickey Mouse cartoon repeated over and over again. Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself.

When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

Scripts can't watch for errors like a human can, and sting did a full backup every night., despite what you may or may not remember. :p

I am sepaking on behalf of Wackbag.com, and I'm sure that not everyone agrees with me, but since I am the administrator/"leader"/a big fan of the show...

We think it really sucks that you were removed from WYSP in Philly. A large part of your listening audience, and a HUGE fanbase now has a glorified iPod to listen to in the morning when waking up, and on their way to work. Their radios are as dark as they were just a few short years ago.

I think you said it best that the new "management" at WYSP "doesn't get it"

I sincerely hope that another station picks you up, and that all the Philly fans get to hear the show again!

In the meantime... if there is anything we can do to help that we haven't been doing already (letters, e-mails, etc., etc.) let us know!!

Our board gnomes got into the Schnapps again. We're doing a backup to make sure they don't screw shit up while they're drunk. The last time we didn't back up, the board smelt of vomit and gnome love for a month.

3-8 minutes.

Time to download, install, configure FileZilla:

Time to compress and download 1.8GB SQL Dump:
22 Minutes


Might skipping compression and only relaying the daily changes reduce the downtime?

I do a gzip manually afterwards, so that I can turn the board back on as soon as the dump completes. That's my daily manual backup (which I download to my home PC).

I have 2 other automated backups that run at other times of the day as well, and those stay on the server until I download & delete them.

The effective downtime for users is about 8 mins.

Oh gawd. I am stupid for thinking all that was done before bring the board back up. Still, if you haven't used rsync before, it might be worth checking out. It only relays the changes to the remote host (or your pc) and will save some bandwidth.

Ahh... the 1.8GB is pre-zip. Post zip, it's about 440MB. It only takes me about 8 mins to grab it. We also have never gone above 40% of our monthly bandwidth, so that's not an issue.

I like rsync as well for other projects. Although, for my personal backups I use MirrorFolder (http://www.techsoftpl.com/backup/index.php)
