I smoke a cigar almost every day and would like to get feedback form other Wackbaggers who also enjoy fine cigars.

My personal favorite is the La Gloria Cubana Serie R maduro#7. Its a rich full body smoke, good consistancy from one stick to another. I'm on the lookout for other cigars that are not mild.

Sound off cigar smokers.

Arturo Fuente hasn't made a cigar I haven't liked....I'm a huge fan of the Opus X line and the Hemmingway's, but the Gran Reserva and Don Carlos are pretty good too. The Fuente Fuente Opus X are my absolute favorite thou...not for the cheap at heart, they're usually around $20 bucks a pop.

Macunudo's are all right....not great, but all right. Cohbia's are pretty good the few I've found (we don't get a lot of the other name brands here in IA, but the few places I've found do a good job), as are Romeo y' Juliette.

Gotta agree with Fuentes, cohibas, and the macanudos. All excellent, and reasonable. I believe they're grown from cuban seed, even if they're not wrapped in Cuba, so they're really nice. I like the cohibas especially, they have a nice spicy flavor.

I had a Punch this weekend, a gift from a friend. As far as appearance I would give it a 4 out of 10, lots of veins and was not rolled well. But when I smoked this ugly beast (large double corona) I was blown away. Smooth, even draw, full flavor and a cool even burn. 7.5 out of 10. Anyone else had any experience with Punch ?

I actually started out smoking PUNCH cigars when I was 18. Sorry, I listened to a lot of Rush at that point and he did spots for them.

I am really a cigar smoker without a brand. I'll have to check out some of your cigars. I usually just smoke those little Al Capones from time to time and love clove cigs. I'll usually get a couple cigars from time to time, leave them in my small humidor and smoke them on my way out to jam with my band in PA.

I know this is a fine cigar discussion and all, but I might be able to find an answer. I like cigars, I smoke them on occasion. From time to time (or cigar to cigar) I get wicked heartburn while I'm smoking. It's not every time though. Do you think it could be a certain type of cigar causing this or am I just a weak stomached vag? Oh, and I don't smoke cheapo cigars. My dad is into cigars and he gives me the good stuff.

I wouldn't say I am a cigar "afficionado", but I smoke enough cigars to know that the Cubans I have had have not been as good as I expected. I did some research on this, and the reason I have found is that the Cubans are in such high demand that they don't let the tobacco dry as long as it should, so when they roll the cigars, they are just a little bit "wet". This incomplete dryness leads to an imperfect burn, which results in a tiny bit of ammonia being in the smoke, which can offset the flavor. So, I prefer any high quality Cuban-seed cigar rolled in Honduras or some other third-world carribean country.

I used trial and error. Go smoke a few various types, then go back and explain to the guy that runs the shop what you liked. That is when he will show you what you should try next. Rinse, repeat.

I smoke Cohibas exclusively, cause I have a shitload of them here, and they make me dizzy. I've noticed that the burn ring will kinda take off in a small section, and be way up the stogie, while the rest is perfectly even. Now I know why

cigars are like food, wine, beer or anything that has to do with personal taste. Go to a shop, ask questions, try thing out and build experience.
When yo go try a few cigar types ( lonsdales, toros, churchhills, coronas) and check out different shades of cigars (start light). As your experience builds your taste will change. Have fun and ask for help at the local shop.

Fellas. Got a question. I recieved a box of samplers from someone. They arnt soft and ready to light. Is there something i can do to bring thease stogies back to life?

If you dont have a humidor, get a gallon zip lock bag, a brand new sponge (one for washing dishes), and a gallon of distilled water. Place the cigars in the bag on a flat surface where they won't be disturbed. Soak the sponge in the distilled water and wring it out, then place it in the bag NOT TOUCHING THE CIGARS. Seal the bag and every two weeks or so, check the sponge to make sure it hasnt dired out and rotate the cigars around. If you see any green fuzz starting to deveop, pull out the cigars wipe them off with a dry paper towel, throw out the sponge and the bag and start again. The green fuzz is mold and once its there it will ruin the cigars and contaminate the sponge. Once the cigars are soft they are ready, you can keep them in the bag in place of a humidor for any length of time, just be sure not the get them too soft. Too soft is when they get spongy. Any questions feel free to PM me.

I've been smoking cigars for about 16 years, on and off. I started with the cheap-o smokes from 7-11 ( Dutch Master, Backwoods etc.) Yuck!
My 1st real cigars were Macanudo Prince Phillips. I assumed a really big cigar was the best.
I tried a LOT of different smokes, and I ended up staying with the AVO #2, and the Ashton Magnum as my main smokes. Both are excellent, but the AVO is a bit more robust than the Magnum. Romeo Y Julietta, and Fuente (Chateua) (sp?) are also really good.
I actually bought about $300 worth of Cubanos in Canada a few years ago. I smoked one of them (Cohiba) while I was camping in the Great White North, and put the rest in my humidor. Unfortunately, there was hardly any fluid in the humidor, and they all dried out. Oops. I was not especially impressed by the Cuban Cohiba. I guess I expected more from all the hype.

I like the AVO as well, I think it could be a bit stonger with a darker wraper, but its still a solid stick. I have to agree with you on the Cubans, they are good cigars but with all the hype the expectations are so high that anything less than a fantastic cigar is a let down.

Buy a gauge, i prefer digital, they run about $20-30 but well worth it. Every day for a week wipe down the inside of the humidor with distilled water. Use a new, clean sponge, but you can reuse it throughout the week. Then either take a 2nd sponge or buy some of the green shit they use in flower shops at the arts/crafts store and soak it with distilled water. Set it in the humidor on a piece of saran wrap(so it doesnt stain the wood with a wet spot) and close the lid. Only take it out when you are wiping it down that 1st week. After that first week you should be good to go. The hydrometer should read ~80-90% during that week and optimal for the cigars is between 65-75% depending on how soft you like them (lower the numnber, the firmer the cigar.)

Which place in Sioux Falls...was it Eastwold? I know the owner there (I used to live 45 min. from SF and I went to Eastwold a lot after I turned 18...there is NOTHING good in NW Iowa).

On a whim I tried an Acid (blue label) since everyone was talking about them....I was impressed....happily impressed. They're pretty good. Specially from a company that is known for making Kahlua and Sauza flavored cigars.

I got my promotion at work....so come March 24th I'll be getting a good expensive cigar to celebrate my transfer from the 9th ring of hell. Probably get a Opus X unless anyone can tell me of something better. Might get one of those Makers Mark ones too....they sound good.

I don't know the name of the place. I had to go and meet a new hire in Souix Falls, and I had a five hour drive back home so I wanted a few sticks. Try the La Gloria Cubana Sere R #7maduro. 1 Box Casa Fuente Belicoso
1 Box Diamond Crown Maximus Toro
1 Sampler Ashton VSG

The dude at my cigar shop turned me on to the VSG's. Wish he wouldn't of, they're pricey, but very good. My everyday smoke is the Chateau Fuente. It's a good 15-20 min smoke. If I want to take my time, I'll smoke a Double-Chateau. Yardwork smoke is the Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro. Got about 12 Opus X of various sizes that I'm saving for special occasions.

If you're into cigars, you gotta at least go and poke your head in. If you like any of the fuente line of cigars, you'll find them all there. Even the rarest and hardest to find can be had, at "Vegas Strip" prices. They're comparable to what you'd pay at other places, just a better selection.

The way I look at it, I'll sit at the blackjack table and play $25 hands of blackjack without thinking twice about it. Or, I could grab a nice cigar and a drink, and spend an hour relaxing/enjoying myself, and its way cheaper.

I haven't smoked in a few months, I used to smoke every day on the drive home (it used to be a long drive). One of the few things I miss about my old job. I would smoke the JR imitations and their Limited editions as my daily smoke, and try different smokes during the weekends, the Patel's are good smokes as are Padron's. But not to expensive Jose Marti and H. Uppman are also good smokes.

Tailgating cigars I recomend Bolivars, not expensive and for some reason they taste great after a medium rare steak and some good brew.

I have had this smoke, and I like it alot. It is a great after dinner evening smoke. I think you and I are alike Turtle. I prefer a full-bodied smoke to anything else. The size of the smoke is perfect if you want to set out on the deck for about an hour and just relax with a good scotch.

Another suggestion, but it is a little early for this, is to wait until late October or early November and Fuente ships a special Opus X that is made from Tobacco that is from the original crop in a previously unreleased size. It is expensive ($45 to $60) for two cigars, but they come in crystal humitubes, and are incredible smokes. I smoke mainly from the Don Carlos, Hemingway, and Opus X series' (with the exception of the Canones and 858's) just to give you an idea of where my proclivities are. If you like those cigars then try it, but if you don't like these smokes then I am not a person that you want to listen to.

I just got back from Bermuda and had a chance to indulge in some Cuban cigars.
It has been a few years since I had a way to obtain them thru Canada and a few years before that I had a friend in the Bahamas. Now with my new connection I will be enjoying them for a long time to come.
I had tried some of the Cohiba Siglo VI & Esplendidos and also the Trinidad Fundadores all very good but very costly around a Gnote a box, they would be more like smokes for a special occation. The Partagas Corona Senior is a nice after dinner smoke. And I also dabbled in the Puritos from Quintero and Partagas they where a good full smoke -for a small cigar- while at the Pool and on the beach.
But I think I found a good cigar for the morning and evening drive now that I am home and that would be the Jose Peidra Conservas, an unusuall light smoke.
Anyone that has tried some others let me know how and when you smoke them. As you can see I like different sizes and tastes for different places and times of the day.
Sorry if some of my descriptive terms are little different I am not really a fancy man, its just a roll I play.

I've hade several Cuban cigars over the past 10 years, and they have never been as good as the hype behind them. They were good cigars, but the legend of the Cuban Cigar has gotten to the point that they will never meet expectations. Again, never had a bad Cuban, just not one that I felt was equal to the hype.

Truth be told, other than a some Cuban Montes and a scant few Cuban Cohibas, there a ton of good smokes comming out of the DR, Ecuador, and Nicaragua that rival or even better most Cubans!. I find Cuban cigar construction (except for the really expensive cigars) spotty at best. Quality control just isn't the same anymore for some reason.

Don't put your cigars in the fridge.

I got this from a cigar mailing list that I am on. It's the uber anal, cigar snob way of bringing them back to health.

The most important thing to remember is that restoring a dried
cigar takes time--lots of time and patience. Don't be in a hurry to
get the job done.

Step 1:
Put your cigars in a non-humidified humidor. If this doesn't exist,
then you can use a Ziploc bag with some holes poked in it. You want
to bring the cigars to a steady humidity level that is much less
than 70 percent. Let them sit in this environment for about 2-3
days.

Step 2:
Dampen a fresh, clean sponge with distilled water. Place it inside
the Ziploc bag, and allow it to sit there, not touching any cigars,
for at least one more week. This will slowly add humidity to the
cigars at a rate that will prevent the wrappers from bursting.

Step 3
After two weeks, your cigars should start to look a lot healthier.
Put them in your charged, maintained humidor at this point. Don't
smoke them yet. Let them rest for while. I would suggest a month or
two, just to make sure things are back to normal. Then you can feel
free to smoke to your hearts content.

I really enjoy Nat Sherman Host Series. I purchased one from a local store to try it out and the day after I tried it I ordered a box. JR Cigar is the best online store to buy from. Plus, if you are just getting into it. I recommend pickup up "The Complet Idiots Guide to Cigars". It tells you about the wrappers, binders, the difference in leaves depending on where they are grown. Very good buy. I also purchased some Don Rigos that Ronnie B. smokes. I couldn't find a review for them or an online shop for them anywhere besides DonRigocigars.com. Based on Ron's recommendation I bought a 25 bundle for only $40. Surprisingly it is a very good smoke.

I'm a big fan of Acid cigars which, from what I understand, are kinda frowned upon by more traditional cigar lovers because they are "flavored", some more than others.

Much like O&A, either you'll love them or hate them.

A few Acids I've really liked are:

Gold wrapper - Atom Maduro, Earthiness.

Blue Wrapper - Kuba Kuba, 1400cc.

Start off with the Gold wrapper Atom Maduro and/or the blue Kuba Kuba...those are my favorite Acids. About 5 - 8 bucks each.

I just started getting into cigars myself.

So far my tastes have leaned towards medium-full bodied smokes. The brands I've found enjoyable that are below $6 are:

Rocky Patel Vintage '92- very rich dark flavor.

5 Vegas "A" series- Like dark unsweetened chocolate and expresso. as you get farther in you get a nice toasted nutty flavor.

Acid "Blue Label" line ie; "Kuba Kuba", "Blondie" (all Acid tend to be pricey though so shop around.

Don Rigo's- these are Ronnie's smoke of choice. Jose is helluva nice guy. He sent me 5 samples when I emailed him awhile back asking for his opinions on where to start. The "Torpedo Tens" he sells are excellent as are the "Biaggio" Panetelas. Unfortunately the Robusto line seems to get get worse as they age. Like wet cardboard. Maybe I just got a bad batch.

Gran Habano #3 - Great medium all around stick.

Sites to go to:

For reviews no other site can compare to this place (http://www.top25cigar.com/reviewdatabase/). Over 30,000 reviews on individual brands.

To Purchase you need to check out CigarBids.com (http://www.cigarbid.com/auction/). the auctions are so addictive that it isn't funny. I blew $70 in one sitting. Another place is Famous Smokes (http://www.famous-smoke.com/cigars/index.cfm) and Cigars International (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/index.asp). The last two are the biggest cigar retailers on the net.

All right, so I must be a super fag.

My every hour "chew" cigars are Backwoods, not the flavored ones either.

The Daily cigars: All Robusto in size:

- Helix Madoro
- Drew Estate African Camaroon, and La Viga Habannas
- Cusano 18 year Madoro
- Roly, Madoro bundle pack,- really cheap but a good smoke
- CAO double madoro MX2- becomming hard to get now
- Real Myorga's, Natural Box pressed
- Cohiba Siglo 2 and Siglo 5 - real Cuban, will wait till I can get em cheap

I could go on and on, but these are the ones I typically smoke, it all depends on the mood so the ones listed above vary differently in "boldness" category. Rule of thumb, Madoro's are usually stronger then naturals.

I am well beyond the beginning stages now, I definitely like a maduro, with a wide ring gague, 48 or above. That is one reason I also like robustos, but a nice churchill is good every now and then. I need to try Rolys, I've heard they'r are a good cheapo. I prefer a thick smoke, I have a heavy draw, so thinner cigars get hotboxed too quickly. I too am a heavy drawer, thats why I land up chewing the backwoods when I smoke em. I like the resins that collect at the end of the cigar with the combination of some good ol spit. I just pouch it between my gum and my upper lip, I know its not the healthiest thing to do but it is awfully tasty and it packs a punch of nicotine.

As far as the CAO, they also make a MX2, its the double Maduro version. They were coming out with there second batch when CAO Decided that they were gonna hold off a couple years before releasing them again, I guess the first run off sold so quickly that they couldn't keep up with the ageing. I have tried the CX2, but its too "nutty" for my taste

I recently tried and was moderately impressed with the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066, it was a little on the "nutty" side though, which I am not a huge fan of, but this wasn't too bad. I found a reasonable cheapo brand that the local tobacconist just got in: "Mr. B". At $1-1.50 a stick, these arent too bad, though the do kind of have the dirty taste that most cheap Nicaraguan cigars tend to have, just not nearly as much as other cheapos. I am eagerly awaiting the burning of the monstrous 7x58 La Gloria Cubana Serie R I picked up today.

Good medium body cigars, havent found one I don't like. I haven't delved much into the italian CAO's, but I would assume that they would be as good as their Brasilian cigars, which are real good for the price. CAO is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands, they really cover the spectrum and can't make a bad cigar.
CAO Gold is a great mild smoke:
http://www.neptunecigar.com/fpdb/images/ligne/p114.gif

The CAO Italia is darker and pairs perfectly with a good scotch or glass of Amaretto.
http://www.quibbles-n-bits.com/archives/cigars2/CAOItalia.jpg

The Brazilla is similar with more of a spicy flavor. Very good with a port wine.
http://www.quibbles-n-bits.com/archives/Cigars/CAOBraziliaSamba.jpg

The CAO Vision is their newest cigar. Medium bodied with a spicy finish these cigars are an excellent smoke, but pretty pricey. Each cigar is individually numbered due to the rare Dominican corojo wrapper, which at least for me, makes it a tough decision to smoke when I open my humidor.
http://www.luxist.com/media/2006/06/caovision.jpg

I recently went up to NH, If you're ever in the North Conway area check out the Village Cigar Emporium located next door to the theater. The entire place is a walk-in humidor and has any cigar you can think of. And the guy that runs the place really knows his shit.

I tried a few cigars while I was up there. I revisited the Zino brand. While I've always been partial to the Platinum, which is a milder smoke, I tried the classic line maduro. A little dark for my taste but overall it was a decent stick. Of course when I left I grabbed a Zino Grand classic Sumatra. These puppies are perfect to save for a long drive. They come in a hermetically sealed silver wrapper and are pre cut and ready to light.

I'm also digging the Cusano brand lately, both their M1 (Mild) and the 18 yr double connecticut are great inexpensive smokes.
http://www.tbs-cigars.com/cigars/Cusano_Cigars/Cusano_M1_Bundle_cigar.JPG
http://www.cigarblogger.com/cigar006-cusano18.jpg

Last but not least in this roundup is the $20-and-worth-every-penny Ashton Estate Sun Grown. I got one of these for my birthday along with the CAO Vision and this is one spectacular cigar, medium bodied with a perfect draw and great flavor, even with an inch and a half left I didn't wanna put it out.

HEY!!!:action-sm

Bumpity Bump!

Been tryin a lot of different ones.
I DO tend to like a flavored (and it doesn't mean overly) more.

I've been keeping a small diary of bands and reviews.

CAO flavors: Like Eileen's Dream and Moontrance best. Earthnectar was good but I wanted to be better. Brazilia was also good.

Heaven Rum was very good.---DID NOT LIKE THE HONEY!!!

Someone mentioned the Cubain "counterfeit". I remember tryin these a long time ago. I like it alot. Got one the other day and remembered why.

I also liked the small Cohiba and Criollo.

I currently have in my humidor:
1 La Gloria Cubana(good, had one.)
1 Don Tomas Maduro
1 tight ass Cohiba
and 1 Acid Nasty.

Just ordered the Mega Sampler from Thompson (16 Sticks-(always get a kick out of "Stick") for $29.95.

Gonna look over at www.jrcigar.com and Drew Estate site www. cigarsdelicioso.com

A few of my everyday cigars:

Camacho Corojo - when you need to get a buzz, this cigar delivers. I've been dizzy, damned near puked, but had a great time. These need to come with a chair!

Nat Sherman Host Selection - Opposite side of the spectrum. Mild to medium, smooth. A sweetenend cap, that enhances rather than detracts.

Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 - Benchmark. Med, taste of cameroon wrapper in the best possible light. This is an excellent cigar to try 1st.

Fonseca met Zedar (for mine fuhrer) - Made for the German market originally, this cigar is a med-full bodied dominican with a spicy wrapper.

La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel - another nicotine rocket. You will get high off of this cigar.

I love Nat Sherman. Highly enjoyable. I have been trying to find this one cigar online that I bought by Don Pepin Garcia called "601". I keep finding the black label ones online but I purchased a red label one that was terrific. I haven't had any luck so far.

The owner of my local cigar shop has been telling me to try more of the CAO line, I've tried the Brazillia, I think in a torpedo, and it was ok, but the burn was poor keep canoeing on me...and that just pisses me off. Anyway give me a CAO recomendation in a maduro.

I think I had one CAO ever and I liked it. I have to try another one since it has been a long time when I had it. The cigar that I was looking for is called an EO brand 601 Habano Robusto by Don Pepin Garcia.

Then i'd recommend the Italia or the Sopranos line.

I've noticed the smaller Italias and Brazillias suffer from canoing, yes annoying, you shouldn't have to work to enjoy your cigar.

It seems I always have a new favorite cigar every time this thread is bumped.
I still love my CAOs but in the summer I tend to prefer a more mild smoke, and the Perdomo Reserve Champagne is like smoking butter. Great flavor, great smoke.

CAO now makes the Gold in Maduro, but I didn't try one. :icon_mrgr

and I totally forgot about the CAO MX2. I love the cx2, spicy for a connecticut so I'd imagine the mx being right up your alley.
http://blog.slatner.com/content/binary/MX2InHumidor.jpg

Was at the shop today, had a very nice Ashton Cabinet Series, It had a creamy cedar flavor to it.

I brought home a RP Olde World Reserve, which I'm told, despite the dark wrapper is a mild cigar with hints of cocoa.
http://the2ndhalf.typepad.com/photos/my_humidor/rp_owr.jpg

And I snagged the new Perdomo Habano in the Corojo wrapper. Cigar's got some girth. Too new for a web pic, i'll break out my camera, might as well show off my new humidor.
First, here's the cigar, all artistic and shit

and my new Humi.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h112/rtsniper/IMG_0378_resize.jpg
My favorite shop was having a Father's day sale, this was marked down from $400 to $170 but there was a lacquer stain all over the plexi on the front, so he gave it to me for $90, It cost me $8 to replace the plexi. :icon_mrgr
The top and bottom drawers hold my humidifiers, I took my digital hygrometer out of my old humidor and had the perfect amount of room on the top drawer to mount it so i don't have to open it to check the humidity.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h112/rtsniper/IMG_0382_resize.jpg
Second drawer, pretty much my favorites and other mild cigars I haven't tried, I think of this drawer as the queue.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h112/rtsniper/IMG_0387_resize.jpg
Third drawer, Maduros and darker cigars.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h112/rtsniper/IMG_0388_resize.jpg
fourth drawer, my churchills I can never find the time to smoke.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h112/rtsniper/IMG_0389_resize.jpg
fifth drawer, cubans, tubos and rare/old cigars I don't have the heart to smoke yet. The RYJ, Cohiba, and the Montecristo Le Grand Delacroix all were given to me by a customer of mine and aged perfectly, they all have a shitload of plume on them, I just can't do it. That particular Monte isn't made anymore.

CAO Black VR....it's the maduro version of the CAO Black. I ordered a dozen single sticks off cigar.com and this was one of the ones I decided to try. I can't say enough good things about it! Very smooth and tasty. I'm planning on scraping up the cash to buy a box to split with a buddy of mine as soon as I can.

I also love "Maker's Mark" cigars when I can get them. I don't believe they make Maduros, but the natural wrapped ones that I have had are great. They are infused with Maker's Mark whiskey, have a full body smoke and give you a nice head rush.

I saw those Maker's Mark smokes at the cigar store I go to. I'll give one a try now that I know they aren't complete dogshit. Normally I like the Punch in the Maduro wrapper.

I don't smoke cigars all that often. How long will they last when they aren't in a humidor? I have one left (still wrapped) that I bought last Saturday. Will it still be good for this Saturday?

Don't throw it out. Try the trick. Even a fucked up good cigar is better than nothing. Keep in mind though it will probably never be an awesome smoke again. I will drive 20 miles to get a decent smoke from a proper humidor. When it comes down to a good smoke, it just isn't worth it to cut corners.

You'd be just as good with a tupperware containter. You just need a humidifier.

The best solution is a Cooler-dor. You can make one for less than $50 and it will hold hundreds of cigars.

Get a rectangular cooler, with a good sealing lid. I go for the 40 gallon. The kind you can sit on.

Purchase a rubbermaid container, about the kind that would hold a sandwich, or a little bigger.

Purchase a block of Floral Foam, the green shit you stick flowers in.

Purchase a gallon jug of distilled water

Drill holes in the lid of the container. Lots of them!

Slice the floral foam to fit the container. As big as it will fit.

Moisten the floral foam.

Insert container into the cooler.

Add cigars and cigar boxes. Don't use varnished boxes, only use the raw spanish cedar ones. If you just buy singles, your local cigarstore will sell you old boxes for a buck or two. I reccomend the Excalibur and El Rey del Mundo ones as they are raw, spanish cedar in popular sizes.

This will hold, 70/70 even in desert conditions. If it gets too wet, buy propelyne glycol and put a few drops on the foam.
