Listen, cut me some slack. I sit in traffic all day and because satellite radio technology is in it's fucking awful infancy and wont work in my van, I have to listen to Tom Leykis sometimes. Trust me, I've spent over $100 trying to get satellite working in my fuckin' work truck and it just wont work.

Anyways, 97.1 is an all talk format here in LA, home to everybody's favorite Adam Carolla in the morning. ("Good times, good times..." as Jimm would say)
I guess they're changing up their studio or something, so producer and GM Joel Silver was in the studio with Leykis taking calls about the changes and Tom's new contract.

A caller called in and said "Why doesn't Tom broadcast on more than one format, like some other radio personalities?" After beating around the bush, they finally said Opie and Anthony. Joel said, and I'm paraphrasing: "Why do a 3 hour show on one format and then switch to another one. Not only that they have to walk from one building to another and I think it's really burning those guys out, it shows." And Tom said "Why would I sit here on my FM station hyping and teasing the satellite portion of the show in two more hours."

There were a couple other lines by Mr Silver akin to saying they phone in the XM portion of their show, which is such bullshit.

But this dude works for CBS or so he said, he said "they're on our team" or something but then he kind of took a few pot shots at em. I wish I had the audio, you can maybe go to (gulp) blowmeuptom.com or 97.1.com, they stream shit and have podcasts so I dont know if you can get it.

And there were threads about how hated this Joel Silver guy is by the small number of Adam fans. I think Jew Silver fired Adam C's producer and most of his on air cronies. The guy is in the leykis camp. Leykis is an enemy. Does it really suprise anyone that he would take any shot he could think of no matter how wrong and made it up it might be? He's making up excuses for Leykis. Leykis only broadcasts on one format because it's proven it's the only one he can succeed on. Local LA radio. Why pay a guy to broadcast on a national platform when it's been proven that he can't be successful nationally? He failed in New York and if you can't hold down that market, there's no way your going to get a satellite company to dish out the large amounts of money they would have to to get broadcast rights.

Well, 2 things about that:

-The guy said he's "on their team", that he works for CBS, just the West Coast branch. He doesn't just work for Tom, he represents the whole company. So he's kind of shooting himself in the foot by dissing his own employees, O and A.

-I have to correct on one thing, just in case it comes up later: Leykis isn't just local LA, he's all over the west coast. He's on in San Fran and all the major California markets, he's in Arizona and Nevada, Seattle. So he's doing ok. I don't know how, he does the same fucking show every day and he has THE worst and consistently most stupid non contributing callers of any show I've ever heard. Its like 10 minutes of show, then 12 of commercials. I cant handle more than 7-8 minutes at a stretch anyway, depending on what he's talking about.


The only guys worth listening to on 97.1 are Conway and Wittman, who are a bit hacky at times but all in all do a pretty original show, no phony "radio voices", no hole, and nothing "outrageous" or gimmicky. Plus Conway does THE best Leykis impression in the world, if you had both of them in the studio you couldn't tell who was who, its ridiculous. And he busts Leykis' balls constantly and makes fun of him on there. They should get on O and A buddy list, they're the only decent talk radio out here that doesn't sound like every other fucking thing and dont rip off every radio show ever. Hoo hoo.

I dunno, given how much O&A are unhappy with having to switch studios mid show, I'd say that's a pretty true statement.

Saying that someone is "burnt out" isn't really a dig at them. O&A have worked really hard to get where they are despite Free-FM and XM doing all they can to prevent them from succeeding. It gets pretty tiring and frustrating having to deal with that all the time. I know I'd be burnt out.

Now if he said that they were washed up or anything like that, then what the guy said might be worth getting mad over. But that quote that you posted is pretty much the truth, and O&A would admit it all day long.

I listen to 97.1 I've heard them mention O&A fairly frequently especially during FHF (Frank clearly worships O&A). I know Silver was on last week joking that O&A's joining the LA lineup was imminent. I didn't take that seriously but he clearly likes the show a lot.

I've never been more disappointed in the direction of radio than when I heard he got a new contract. Phoenix radio is dead, but I'd rather listen to some AM hack than that fat fucker. He does not get laid and probably has AIDS from sucking blistered cocks.

Well, no actually. There's a difference from what I said in the title, he actually said they were "burned out". Those were the words he used, and that's the title of the thread. He said a couple other things, and the tone and the way they were describing them was very deriding of the boys. Leykis threw his hat in the ring only so much, he knows not to fuck with them and it was very obvious he didnt care much for O and A but he didnt step too far out of line. I wish there was somewhere to get the audio damn it.

You should see it now. It's been completely hijacked by corporate franchises. It looks like a fucking thruway exit, it's terrible. It used to be full of personality and cool mom and pop local businesses, but now it looks like "anywhere, USA".

97.1 is a mess. Adam and Danny is just not working. They take a break almost every eight minutes. There is zero flow to it. And the hole is the worst, she has that great comedy background of home improvement shows on TLC, that is exactly the kind of funny female that fits on a show for men.

To me the only show that makes sense is Frosty, Heidi, and Frank. I don't really like it, but it makes sense as a mid-day show. It's just safe enough that you could listen to it in a business and no one would really complain. It's like when Radio Chick was on in mid-days, that made sense to me also. I really don't understant why O&A best ofs aren't played out here on the weekends. I guess Adam's people would flip out. Instead they play a Leykis wine tasting show, because real men love sampling wine.

That movie show on Saturdays on 97.1 is ok also.

I'm trying to find a way to get my extensive and extremely explicit "T and A with O and A" video online. It's on Hi-8 video, I dont know how to hook my old camcorder up to my computer. The footage is fucking amazing.


Two thoughts:

#1- Aren't you a camera guy? Why is this so hard to figure out? Surely someone in your union can help you post that video. Er... you are in the union right?

#2- The fact that you're talking about audio that we can't hear and footage we will never see does not suprise me.

Thekidslepthere, I agree about Bonaduce. Hey really throws that show off. He has one bag of tricks, the: "can you believe I was so crazy when I was younger..." And every 'wacky' story somebody says Danny has to chime and go "See, now that would be me, but I'd wake up with a midget and an empty bottle of vodka." It's all about how 'outrageous' he can be. Or a reference to "Breaking Bonaduce". "You know, that totally happened on Breaking Bonaduce once...." It's like allllriiiight...... We get it. Or he has to be "Guy that doesnt agree with everyone" guy. He has to have the extreme opposite opinon on everything, so he can "shake things up." The hole sucks too.

I totally agree with the Saturday night movie show, I love it. Im tellin ya dude, Conway and Whitman rule. They should be on afternoon drive, not fucking awful Frosty Heidi and Frank. Heidi has the worst, most nauseating laugh in the history of radio.

Dug, it's not a digital camera, it wont take a USB cable and it doesnt have any fucking ports to hook up to anything, it only has USB cables. I work with 35mm film cameras and HD cameras, not bought from the store video cameras. And I dont work in fucking post production either.

King of Depew - Do you realize that up until a couple years ago Brian Whitman was doing political talk in NYC on WABC? I think they simulcast him on KABC also. I know he made news in NYC for doing some spot on imitations on the Curtis and Kuby show, where people really thought it was Bill Clinton, or something like that. I don't really listen to that show that much. I have a hard separating that show from bad memories of Dorf on Golf and The Apple Dumping Gang, fucking Conway just sounds like his dad way too much.

I was listening a month or two ago, and heard them get in a fight on the air, something about Whitman flying around the country for interviews for his own radio show. And Conway was pissed about it, I guess they aren't a real team since Whitman just really took over for Stickler, and they had no real history. Anyone else happen to hear this?

I still say Corollas best move would of been to hook up with Dicky Barrett, the singer from the Bosstones. I've known Dicky since the early 90's when my older brother was booking the concerts at UMASS, he's incredibly quick witted. His morning show on Indie 103.1 was great, and I really think the two of them would of worked out. They are great friends, and both work on the Jimmy Kimmel show together. But this Bonaduce/Carolla show, should not be allowed to continue.

Listen, cut me some slack. I sit in traffic all day and because satellite radio technology is in it's fucking awful infancy and wont work in my van, I have to listen to Tom Leykis sometimes. Trust me, I've spent over $100 trying to get satellite working in my fuckin' work truck and it just wont work.

Yeah, they do political talk still sometimes. They're always fighting, Conway and Whitman are. I'm kind of a new listener, but I understand they have kind of a rocky relationship. I know for like a week Whitman wouldnt come in and would call from home and they'd scream at each other.

Hell yes dude, Dicky Barrett. He was hosting a show on an indie music channel out here for a while but he got fired for some reason, but he was awesome. Carolla is really quick witted and he's best at Improv. He should have just gotten his own show with just him or just him and like one other person, not this stupid formatted "morning zoo" type show. It just kills him. Look how fucking great he was on Loveline all those years, the guy is one of the most quick witted dudes I've ever heard on the radio. The best would have been just like him and a black dude from the ghetto. "Bonadussse?" (as Roland would call him) and the hole just wreck any chance of him having a good show.

Leykis pretty much rules the ratings anytime he is live on the west coast, to call him a failure is just ignorant.He's not failure in local radio or even regional radio for that matter. But you'll never be considered a national success if you fail in the New York market.
But you east coast douches have to understand that west coast guys could care less if they make it in New York. LA is what really matters. I keep waiting for O&A to get into the LA market so they can be taken seriously out here.West coast guys may not care about who makes it in New York and who doesn't but radio people do. And so do advertisers. There's a reason why O&A are the biggest name in the hot talk format today. You can be a national success without ever stepping foot in the LA market but you can't be a national success if you fail out of the New York market. It's just the way it is.
