WTF?
DENVER -- It's hard to imagine a thrill ride with no screaming, but that's the rule now at an amusement park in California. The Scandia Family Fun Center in Sacramento has enacted a no screaming rule for the Scandia Screamer, a 168-foot ride that spins those on board up to 60 miles an hour and pulls 3.5 G's. If riders scream, they get kicked off."If you feel like you might make noise cover your mouth...if we can hear a noise, we're required to take you off the ride," said Scandia general manager Steve Baddley.
The scream ban came after neighbors complained about the noise."It's like going from firecrackers to the atomic bomb. I mean, it's like you're going from small family entertainment tosomething that's grossly, grossly out-of-place out of place in a neighborhood," said neighbor Mike Bayless.Neighbors said sound isn't the only problem, and they are considering a lawsuit against the amusement park. They call the ride an eyesore when it's lit up at night, and also a privacy issue because riders can see into their back yards.Scandia management said they chose the particular ride because of its quiet motor and because they needed the ride to stay viable in a competitive marketplace. As for riders, they'll just have to enjoy with their mouths shut."I didn't think we were that loud," said one rider who was ejected. "It's hard to tell. It's a human reaction to yell when you're going in the sky, face down on the freeway."
