Damn, Time is a Bitch!
Leap of Faith
The call came out of the blue, just weeks ago.
The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, known to millions around the world through his “Hour of Power” church broadcast, was working at his desk when his secretary rang: “There’s a man on the phone who says he’s Evel Knievel, and he wants to talk to you about giving his life to Christ.” It gave him pause, but Schuller said he took the call, thinking, “I will give any impossible idea a hearing because it may be a miracle happening.” The first words out of Knievel’s mouth were, “Dr. Schuller, I’ve accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.” Knievel went on to tell the minister he’d been overcome recently by this powerful thought: “Evel, the God you’re praying to is never going to do anything for you until or unless you accept Jesus as his son and your savior who died on the cross for your sins.” “It was so distinctive, so remarkable,” Schuller said of Evel’s awakening. “It really shook him to the core of his being.” Knievel said he’d always believed in God, but thought of Jesus as “a human being that was kind of like a Billy Graham, a brilliant man of his time that moved a lot of people.” But then one day everything changed.
“I don’t know what happened to me,” Knievel told The Standard during a recent phone interview from his Clearwater, Fla., home. “I didn’t see it on a TV show, or see it in the newspaper or hear it on the radio or read it in the Bible. Something happened to me just so seriously that I just all of the sudden just woke up.” Ever the showman willing to share his life with the world, Knievel told Schuller he wanted to make a public announcement about his conversion during the “Hour of Power.” He had seen Andy Griffith on the show a few weeks earlier, and his and Schuller’s longtime mutual friend, the late J.C. Agajanian, famed race car owner and promoter, had appeared on the show years ago.
Seeing is believing Before agreeing, the 80-year-old Schuller decided to visit Knievel in Florida to make sure his story was for real. After all, he had a 57-year reputation as a minister to uphold. Former guests during his services had included United States presidents and Mikail Gorbachev, former leader of the Soviet Union, not to mention Gregory Peck and John Wayne.
Schuller told The Standard he had long admired Knievel for his courage and his “possibility thinking” in committing to motorcycle jumps that were so seemingly impossible, but he had kept his distance over the decades because Knievel’s private life was “so unashamedly non-Christian and non-religious.

Homoerotic crap like that is just one of the reasons I lost faith in the Catholic church.

Yechh....
The things people do to disempower themselves.:icon_cry:
Evel was a great stuntman and showman, but as a human being he left a lot to be desired.
Like many people (sad fools) with pent-up guilt, he turned to the commercialized mass religious zealots for redemption, who promise to save the soul he thinks he can't save himself.
Once again, yeeechh...

Can you really fault the guy? He is feeling the hand of death on his shoulder.

For caving in to a ridiculous belief that this is the only answer to redeeming himself??
Yeah, I can find some fault in that.
But Evel is not exactly a balanced individual to begin with, so I guess it doesn't surprise me.
He'll be fine, no matter what he chooses to do in his last days. (That's just my belief though..):icon_wink

But if you fear at some part of yourself at some time near death, that you may end up with a guy with a sunburn and horns after you die, tell me you would not run to the church!
Not a practicing Catholic either, but I believe in there being an afterlife and where you go, depends on your spirit when you die.

Damn it, I didn't want to get too heavy here, but I'll keep it quick...:icon_mrgr
-All religions blow, and atheism stinks too (they worship Darwinism).
-There is no "boogey man" devil, period. All evil is man's own creation.
-There is one creating force we all came from (call it what ever you want).
-We will all be fine, since death is not the end.
-You are already a spirit now; death is only another reality of experience.
Bill Hicks described it best (and no drugs needed).....Linky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX1CvW38cHA)

.....so any type of last minute redemption for Evel is bullshit, (actions mean everything, not just adopting a man-made belief).
And religious fundamentalism is the furthest fucking thing from the truth....

You state that all religions blow and then go on to list the attributes of your own religion. Basically there is some type of god (so your life isn't meaningless), and you will live forever (so you don't have to fear death). Your religion is a simplified version of every religion. You're right, all religions blow, including yours. It's also a hacky religion btw. At least come up with something interesting, worship those bugs that look like sticks or maybe build shrines out of marshmellows. Cmon, use your imagination.

ahhh, and here they come...
You are absolutely right in your assessment of my over simplified statement of "they all blow".
I'm drinking tonight, and this is too big of a subject to cover in a few posts but I'll try to make myself more clear.
Religions tend to mix many truths with lies and/or man's interpretations.
If you study the origins of the religions like I've had, you'll see that they all share the same stories but put their own spin on the "ways" of reaching enlightenment or heaven.
The new science [today] is proving that there is energy behind our thoughts and intents (quantum physics, string theory, etc.)..
If you look closely enough, you can trace the similarities of the religions with the science and see that it CAN make sense.
Once again, this is not something that can be explained with a few short posts, but if you really want to explore this subject, PM me and I can point you in a few directions.
If you think I'm trying to push MY belief on anyone, you are mistaken. My point wasn't to push what I believe, (which is your reality is your own) but to show that many religions tend to disempower you by telling you god is this all rightious judge who will decide your fate when your time on earth is done.
You are your own creator and judge, and your existence is created by the energy force that creates all being.
I'm curious to know what your stand is....(it's only fair since you know mine).
Hacky huh? Since you feel the need to judge me with such a generalized statement I would LOVE to hear your take on things (I'm guessing atheist)....

My stand isn't relevant, I honestly just felt like pointing out the hypocracy in your post and the typical, self-serving nature of your religion. Why? Because I'm an asshole.
But yeah, since you ask, atheist. I would have corrected you on your "worship darwinism" crack but I didn't want to completely derail yet another thread and get into a 4 page argument. I've done that twice now, although in my defense I think one was already derailed by the time I jumped in.
