We know, everyone loves Robert DeNiro. But of the 70s era stars, whom do you think does the most consistent work today?
Some of their recent movies:
DeNiro- any script given to him
Pacino- Ocean's 13, Merchant of Venus, some straight to video crap
Hackman- Runaway Jury, Royal Tenenbaums, Welcome to Mooseport
Hoffman- Meet the Fockers, Perfume: Story of a Murderer, I Heart Huckabees
Nicholson- About Schmidt (a comedy!!), Departed, BUT cancer movie by Rob Reiner
And I'm going strictly for leading men hence no Walken and no Duvall.

The last movie Connery made was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. With the exception of the well-reviewed Finding Forrester (which I never saw to be completely honest) his other movies over the past 10 years are Entrapment and The Avengers. He totally should not be on this list. And even if The Rock was released more recently, I would still say he shouldn't be on this list. Travolta deserves to be on this list more than Connery.

DeNiro has been making shit since Analyze This.
I picked Nicholson. Loved his evil boss character in The Departed, and As Good As It Gets is one of the most underrated movies and performances of his career.

Nicholson was good in departed, but come on... As Good as It Gets? Something's Gotta Give? Yeck.
DeNiro is still the man.

Connery is currently working on the 4th installment of the Indiana Jones movies.
He has one movie in the can and will be released in 2008 called Sir Billi the Vet.
these will be his first movies since the League of extraordinary gentlemen (2003)
Other great Connery films:
Finding Forrester (2000),Entrapment (1999),The Rock (1996),Dragonheart (1996),First Knight (1995),Rising sun (1993), Medicine man (1992),Robin Hood (1991) not to mention - the Highlander movies, Bond movies, Indiana Jones, The Presidio, the Untouchables, Hunt for red october & time bandits.
John Travolta? Lets see - Wild Hogs, be cool, ladder 49, the punisher, basic, swordfish, lucky numbers, battlefield earth, the general's daughter, primary colors, michael, phenomenon & pulp fiction.
While I agree that Travolta is a good actor - he is not on the same level as Sean Connery.

What wacky Connery career am I missing? Please, I want to know because I do like him, I just want to know what was the last amazing thing he did. Or are you missing the "TODAY" part of the poll. This isn't all time, this isn't career long, this is over the past 10 or so years.
Personally I'm torn between Nicholson and Hoffman.
Nicholson yes, SGG was shit and I didn't care for AGAIG but he was funny in Anger Management, I liked him in Departed (didn't think he was great), but thought he was just so fucking amazing in About Schmidt that he deserved an Oscar for that film. His real talent is that he maintains his allure and charisma from the 70s without bringing it into the parody realm and thus ruining it like DeNiro did.
Hoffman though, what I like about him is that a lot of he still remains lowkey in his films. He's still funny, still Hoffman but he doesn't overshadow the movie. Perfume, underseen but I thought was fantastic, he was playing a role without being Hoffman playing a role. Same with him in Stranger than Fiction. And I thought he was absolutely brilliant in Huckabees, as was that entire movie. The other guys, they're still "DeNiro as..." or "Pacino as..." and for that I might have to give the edge to Hoffman but I don't know.

I had to go with Hackman since he's the only one who hasn't made me sick at one point or another in the last 10 years.

Umm Kurt Russell or Sam Jackson??
No for Sam Jackson. I said it had to be a big name in the 70s. Someone who could open a picture on their name alone. Jackson couldn't do that in the 1970s. That's why I said no one like Walken.
Kurt Russell...I knew he was around in the 1970s but I wasn't sure exactly how big he was or if he was at that level. Ditto Jeff Bridges.

No Harrison Ford? Maybe if Indiana Jones completely blows all of us away. Until then show me one movie he's made in the past 10 years that comes close to decent.

Kurt Russell did Disney films back in that time but was well known for them.
Connery technically was big before the 70s.

Why, because "League of Extrodinary Gentlemen" and "Proof" were so great?
Nicholson wins in a landslide. Good thought, good thread, by the way.

Damn you, now I had to go to IMDB to see who from the Dirty Dozen is still alive. Now I feel so fucking old.
For the record: Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Richard Jaeckel and Robert Ryan are all dead.
Donald Sutherland, Jim Brown, Ernest Borgnine, George Kennedy, Trini Lopez and Clint Walker are still hanging in there.
As for the rest of the Dozen, who the fuck remembers their names?

I tend to agree, Jack, Deniro, Hoffman, Pacino, and Hackman are all shitty now.
Connery, Eastwood are my picks
LiddyRules
05-06-2007, 02:07 PM
The reason I didn't include Eastwood is because he's more a director now than an actor. But he was on my mind.
I am still fucking lost on Connery. Unless people actually do consider his performance in Entrapment better than About Schmidt or Tenenbaums. In which case, I'm sorry for you. The argument "Well, he made 2 movies total which were really shitty in 10 years while the others guys made 5 really shitty movies in 10 years."
Would Bill Murray count for this? That was another one I forgot.

Bill Murray doesn't count. He's too young, and wasn't even doing film work in the 70's. Well, nothing of note until Meatballs, and that was 1979.
I wouldn't put Clint and Connery in this because they've been around since the 1950's.
Duvall has carried movies on his own. The Great Santini, and Tender Mercies (which was on last night) to name a couple.
As for DeNiro, I think it was Ron Bennington back in the WNEW days who suggested that somebody must have some really incrimiating pictures of him (maybe fucking a white chick?) for him to be doing such lousy movies.

I wouldn't put Clint and Connery in this because they've been around since the 1950's. I meant people who were big in the 1970s (even if they were big earlier) who are still marquee names today YET still good actors and not just coasting on their earlier fame. The inclusion of DeNiro, despite this, is because he's still considered a major powerhouse actor, when people think of great actor they still think of him and he has tried at times recently. Whether or not you liked the Fokker movies, it was DeNiro who made those movies a hit and I thought as a character he was good.
Because Clint has focused more on directing (yes, I know he's acted in movies in the past 10 years), I did not include him.
Connery, again, I don't see the big deal. He barely makes a movie as it is and when he does they usually suck ass. I might as well include Richard Dreyfus.
Duvall has carried movies on his own. The Great Santini, and Tender Mercies (which was on last night) to name a couple. TGS was in 79, he didn't really emerge as a "lead" until the 1980s.
As for DeNiro, I think it was Ron Bennington back in the WNEW days who suggested that somebody must have some really incrimiating pictures of him (maybe fucking a white chick?) for him to be doing such lousy movies. Yes, yes, it's sad really. In an upcoming movie he plays a character named Seņor Fanjul.
