I just saw this on O&A's page on xmradio.com... hopefully, and this really does make me hopeful... XM is doing the right thing here and starting to fight back and say, it might have been wrong on O&A's part but they have the freedom to say that and if you dont like it you can change the channel...

please let them do what's right...

Opie & Anthony Apology

XM regrets the deplorable comments made on May 9th's Opie & Anthony Show.

Opie and Anthony apologized during the broadcast of their XM show for their comments and for any offense that segment caused:

"We apologize to the public officials for comments that were made on the XM show on May 9th. We do take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom that we get here and regret any offense that this segment has caused."

Listen to the O&A Apology » (http://mfile.akamai.com/20469/mp3/xmradio.download.akamai.com/20469/xmradio/xmapology.asx)

As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. The Opie & Anthony Show appears on one of our explicit language channels (XL) which is clearly noted on the radio display and all our printed material. We also frequently mention on our explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners, and that our service also provides our subscribers with the ability to 'block' channels that feature this type of content.

What would be a full hearted defense? Anything too big would draw attention to the story. This posting does do major damage control as many media sources will be forced to take this statement as XM's rebuttal to the story. Give XM the credit they are due.. they're defending their own turf in a very civilized way.

I sent this email to Mr. Logan. Hope it has some effect:

Mr. Logan,

I want to commend you for thus far standing behind Opie & Anthony. I see that XM’s webpage has made reference to their apology, and pointed out that 202 is an xL channel and can be blocked. I see this as a good sign. A sign that O&A may have crossed a societal line (murky as that can be) but that XM is subscribing to the broad principle of Free Speech, and that if people are offended, they need not listen. Furthermore, I hope you throw the book at Breitbart and Drudge Report for illegally posting the stream of that material. This exponentially fanned the flames, and they should be held accountable.

Again, let me stress that I support Opie & Anthony, and I implore you to continue to do the same. If you and XM stand behind them, you will have a subscriber for life. However, I must say that if this story has legs and pressure builds and XM caves into that pressure, the fallout will be huge, and loyal O&A listeners will leave in droves. Kindly let the rest of the XM braintrust know my (and many others, I am sure) concerns on this matter. Trust me, any public relations gain by firing them will not be commensurate with the loss in subs that XM would suffer. With that said, thanks again for continuing to stick behind the boys. I know it’s not easy, but it is appreciated more than you know. May you have a good weekend, sir.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXXX

You're forgetting an important factor, which is that the content aired on XM, NOT CBS. Now, I'm not saying that I disagree with you that CBS will let them go, but when comparing the situation to the other two, the distinction is one that must at least be recognized.

I call it half-hearted because it is prefaced with a statment that calls the comments "deplorable" and reiterates an apology. So they are, in a sense, defending the content and distancing themselves from it at the same time.

Like the boys always say, people don't have the right to NOT be offended. The apology and the "deplorable" remark could be construed as a mea culpa.

But, again, it's better than nothing at this point.

Very good point. I haven't caught up with the shows from Thursday or Friday yet (I'm a little hesitant too as well - I know there will be huge douche chills), so maybe you guys can fill me in. Was it replayed with the beeps BY O&A while they were on the air, or was it done to fill time during breaks? Did the boys air it and discuss it?

A better sign is that NO vocal special interest groups are making a stand for getting the boys fired to my knowledge. CNN has not covered the story at all today except for a small piece about the "apology". Shep Smith on FOX NEWS, as you already know, has done a very positive piece supporting the boys. The State Dept. and the Whitehouse have chosen not to comment.

The Imus debacle was all over the news all day and NONE of it was positive. Special interest groups (Al Sharpton and others) were in front of cameras several times a day demanding a firing.

The saving grace may indeed be that O and A are on Satellite not public airwaves.

I am encouraged after watching news all day and surfing web sites.

XM knows that once they start firing people for content they are on a slippery slope and they don't want government regulation in this area so them pointing to their channel blocking feature is the perfectly reasonable way for them to respond.

I know some of the Canadian members here can back this up. One of the main XM commercials up in Canada is of 2 guys cruising through a neighborhood in a convertible Corvette, and they have XM Comedy blasting with The Aristocrats. It shows a mom covering her kids ears, and the main selling point is that everything is uncensored. I really wish they would show those here, and drive the point home that uncensored radio is a huge part of satellite radio.

To be honest, XM had the boys apologize probably to head off bad PR. By having them apologize, both the boys and XM look better. And the apologies were toward the "public officials" metioned, not really the special interest groups. At least apologizing to the actual people mentioned, it actually made them look good. The boys have even said that if Imus had to apologize to anyone, it was to the Rutger's Women's Basketball team and nobody else. To be honest, they look alot less hypocritical in my eyes. If they didn't say anything, everyone would wonder why aren't they saying anything which would fuel speculation in the media which would only snowball the situation. And if it does snowball, it would most certainly lead to the end of the O&A show.
XM did the right thing, nipping it in the bud just as it hit the news this morning. And there is no talk or speculation from the XM camp about firing the boys. Thankfully, it's a weekend so the boys won't be saying anything to fuel it and they'll be much more going on than this by monday. By Monday, hopefully, this should subside or at least begin to subside.
As for the merger, that's a year away if it will happen at all. There's alot more than just this incident standing in the way of the merger. This will be just a speck compared to the monopoly laws and stuff like that.

I will have to pull yesterday's Houston Chronicle (shitrag of a newspaper) back out. I could have sworn they printed the standard AP story but at the end it called for XM to "do the right thing and fire the duo". It was such a BS story it didn't even have a by line.
