A representative for Trojan condoms said yesterday that the company would no longer advertise on the “Opie & Anthony” show on a CBS-owned FM station in New York after a guest on another version of the show, on XM satellite radio, mused about sexually assaulting Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, leading to a vulgar discussion.

Anthony Cumia, left, and Gregg (Opie) Hughes, “Opie & Anthony.”

“The Trojan brand is committed to advancing the sexual health of those who choose to be sexually active,” James Daniels, vice president of marketing for Trojan condoms, a division of the Church & Dwight Company, said in a statement. “The recent comments made on the ‘Opie & Anthony’ show are inconsistent with that commitment.”

Trojan is the second advertiser in a week to announce it was withdrawing advertising from the so-called terrestrial radio version of “Opie & Anthony,” broadcast weekday mornings in New York on WFNY-FM (92.3), before the version heard only on XM. On May 4 a representative from the New York State Lottery said that it would discontinue its commercials on the FM show after a comedian who is a regular guest could be heard asking, “Would it be possible, could you whistle ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ while I **** a girl?”

The comedian, Jim Norton, was speaking to another guest, a professional whistler, in an old interview replayed on the FM show on April 25. (The comment was an apparent reference to the 1971 movie “A Clockwork Orange,” which was not mentioned.)

Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumia, the hosts of “Opie & Anthony,” apologized yesterday on both their shows for the bit referring to Ms. Rice, a discussion in which they had joined. The segment, which was initiated by a guest known as Homeless Charlie and was featured Wednesday only on the XM show, also included graphic discussion of a similar attack on Laura Bush. The bit was widely circulated on the Internet on Thursday.

“We apologize to the public officials for comments that we made on our XM show on May 9,” the hosts said. “We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused.”

Asked whether XM would discipline the hosts, Nathaniel Brown, a spokesman for the company, said yesterday that he had no comment, beyond a statement issued on Thursday: “We deplore the comments made on Wednesday’s ‘Opie & Anthony Show.’ ”

Karen Mateo, a spokeswoman for CBS Radio, also had no comment, beyond the following statement: “Fortunately, we have standards that did not and would not ever let something like this make our air.”

This makes absoutely no sense.

Going by James Daniel's logic, if homeless Charlie had said he wanted to have protected sex, then it would have been ok, seeing how "sexual health" would have been taken into consideration.

Idiotic.

Again this douchebag Jacques Steinberg is doing his hacky calling sponsors if you agree to cancel I'll mention you in the NY Times gimmick. Be original you lazy hack.

All it will take is for Homeless Charlie to NOT issue an apology and it will show what a BS story this really is. I mean it will take pictures of this black bum to show the press what a non-story this is. The pests need to have Homeless Charlie wearing a free speech shirt, because it is basically that bum's free speech that is the issue. The New York Times is against homeless people speaking out against public officials.

Trojan condoms has proved they are a right wing company. They have dissed the millions of males who listen to the O and A show, and homeless people and sided with the unpopular Rice and Bush who are against condom usage anyway.

I really wish this hadn't happened before a weekend. This is going to fester in the media and these assholes will continue to drive this into the ground until it culminates in them getting fired from both formats. I know they sounded confident yesterday that they would be on the air on Monday but as I watch the news and this goes on I just worry a little more and maybe I should just turn the TV off. This email has been sent to the nytimes.

I was under the impression that the NY times was supposed to have integrity. That their journalists ( I use that term loosely ) are supposed to have integrity.

I believe Mr. Steinberg has a personal axe to grind with Opie and Anthony and further more I believe he is willing to manufacture news in order to get himself more fame.

It should not be the job of a journalist to behave like special interest groups. They should report the facts.

Mr. Steinberg should not be allowed to continue has biased reporting habits.

Stuff like this, you never really know their motivations. Maybe they were locked into a contractual obligation to sponsor the show for X months, and they didn't feel they were seeing their return. There could be a clause in the contract that allows them to withdraw in a situation like this ... thus, they yank their sponsorship ... and save some money. Not idea if this is the case ... but I'm just saying you never really know what the motivations of a sponsor are. To them, it's really just about selling their product & making money.

Here's a copy of the email I just fired off to them. You can email Church and Dwight through their contact page:

Dear Sirs/Madams:

I am writing you today to express my outrage and disapointment in your company for pulling your advertising from the Opie and Anthony show. This flagrant slap in the face to our nation's first amendment is appalling. While you certainly have the right to place your advertising dollars whereever you choose to, the fact that you have chosen this route speaks volumes about the lack of character within your company. I, along with the members of my household, will no longer be buying ANY of your products as a result of this poor decision on your part, and you can expect millions of other disapointed consumers thoughout the nation to do the same. Thank you for showing the world that you do no support freedom of speech.

Curtly,
