From the Arizona Republic:
XM Radio moral code pretty selective
May. 19, 2007 12:00 AM
XM Radio's press release said that Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia were suspended because "on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them."
What, precisely, is the nature of this responsibility that creative freedom requires? Who decided this?
Obviously it applies to only certain forms of creative freedom because I just switched to XM Channel 66 - a channel called "Raw" - and heard all about drug use, guns and how to treat women - or, as they say in the lyrics on that channel, "bitches" and "hos." In fact, what I heard on Raw was substantially the same kind of language that got Opie & Anthony suspended.
Does XM Radio really buy this whole ethics line they're pushing?
Frankly, I think as long as XM is paying for the broadcast equipment, they should choose what is broadcast via that equipment.
I just have a problem with using morality and ethics to make censorship palatable to the masses.
If the XM management truly believes they have an ethical responsibility to air only acceptable content, then why is hardcore rock, punk and rap music still played? XM should prove that their statements about responsibility are more than just a veiled attempt to put positive spin on censorship.
To make a moral argument, you have to be on the moral high ground. How can XM claim the high ground when they apply their moral code so selectively? - Andy Gutierrez,Laveen
