Just thought I'd throw this out there. This quick blurb was featured on http://www.newsaskew.com, one of Kevin Smith's websites:

Speaking of satellite radio, the flagship talk show of competing satellite service XM, "Opie & Anthony", is under fire after a bit of theirs was deemed inappropriate, even for satellite. As you may recall, Kevin is a frequent guest on the program, both on the phone and in the studio. There's talk of firing the 2 DJs before their month-long suspension ends. We're strong supporters of free speech, and think the issue of censorship is getting out of control these days in the media. So even if you're not an O&A fan, but believe in the principle, you can find a huge amount of information on this by going to People Against Censorship (http://www.peopleagainsensorship.org) or Wackbag (http://www.wackbag.com). See ya again soon, friends!

Very, very cool. Good to see that some non-radio/news websites are putting the cause out there for people to get involved. Brad and Chris, the 2 webmasters have been doing a great job running that site for over 10 years now and are really good guys to boot (I've met them on several occasions). So a big thank you goes out to them!

As far as I know, newsaskew isn't run by Kevin. They're a fan site for news about Kevin and his projects... That said thanks for posting this I was going to check the site a couple days ago to see if it was mentioned but forgot.

I'd watch http://silentbobspeaks.com/ to see if Kevin makes any comments... his last post was before the suspension though.

Kevin Smith doesn't run the site, it's run by Brad and Chris, the two guys I mentioned. If I remember correctly, they started the site around '97 or so as an unofficial fan site, and a few years later Kevin got involved (probably in a financial way for the most part) and it became the 'official' news site of Kevin Smith.

Yeah, I forgot their names... I was just commenting to those who think it's the official word from Kevin.

I'm sure he'll post something.

Fact is, we (zach-braff.com) was talking to him about trying to get home to do the XM show for the release of "The Ex" but I couldn't never get much on the XM side. Anyone know who I should talk to, let me know.

I wrote newsaskew and asked for support. I never got a response, so I am assuming they did it on their own. Kevin Smith rocks!

Here's the dopey letter I sent:

I have heard Kevin Smith on Opie and Anthony's radio show numerous times and have always found him very entertaining and looked forward to seeing each project he has promoted there. In the past they have defended Kevin when he was falsely accused of being homophobic, and more recently when Gene Siskel made an ass out of himself at critics screening of Clerks 2.

Recently Opie and Anthony were suspended from XM satellite radio for 30 days, and will most likely get fired over comments that a homeless man made on their show directed towards the Queen of England, First Lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condi Rice.

This is a freedom of speech issue. There have been a rash of firings as of late in the radio industry over inane jokes made by DJ's that were merely trying to entertain their audiences. DJ's on comedic shows should not be held to the same standards of broadcasting as those on serious news oriented shows. No one should be fired simply because a special interest group that is looking for attention and donations claims to be offended in order to gain press and power. This applies to every artist in the creative media...tv, radio, movies, music, stand up ETC.

Debbie Wolf, a huge Opie and Anthony supporter and free speech advocate has started an organization that has swelled to over 5,000 members in a matter of weeks. It is called http://www.peopleagainstcensorship.com/ . She has appeared on CNN several times on behalf of PAC to defend artists and personalities that have been censored or penalized for exercising their right to free speech. Anything that Kevin Smith could do to help would be greatly appreciated, whether it be a donation, a recorded message supporting free speech or a written statement that can be displayed and attributed to him.

Thank you very much for your time,
Cigarsandscotch Tony

PS I live in Middletown NJ, and loved the local shots used in Clerks 2. Thanks for all of the entertainment over the years.

That fact that Kevin Smith is not only aware but says support wackbag is one of the coolest things ever.

And C&S, newsaskew did respond to your letter for support, in the form of publishing an blurb on the site. A public response is better than an e-mail.

Awesome to everyone helping out in every way they can.

One thing I noticed over there at Zach-Braff: "Help us Support Censorship". I know what you mean, can you reword that to something like "Help us FIGHT Censorship" or "Supprt the Fight Against Censorship"?

We will do it. The link was added in a rush but we will redo it. Give us about 24 hours. It's hard to do a lot of work on weekends for us.
Not sure if it helps but it seems the link has be clicked out 73% of 100% of the daily vistors. So any help is HELP I guess

Like all here, I hope we can do more

Just an FYI, News Askew is part of the View Askew universe, Kevin and his crew have full autonmy on all things posted (Ming is the web guru) So it is safe to assume Kevin had a hand in this, but he is promoting Die Hard 4 so dont expect a personal posting just yet.

I sent this in to NewsAskew yesterday. Brad from the site emailed me back this, and then posted an item in NewBites right away:

I’m a Howard fan, but I do believe in the ideals of free speech. We’ll of course get a mention up for this cause.

Nice guy, very cool.

I couldn't find an email address for Kevin, but I would have emailed him as well, if I could have.

Kevin's really good at keeping abreast of all things concerning him. I'm sure he's knows of the suspension/firing and it's quite possible he's even seen this thread by now. I'm sure he'll say something on the matter when he gets some time.
