On Tuesday, radio shock jocks, Opie and Anthony, were suspended for thirty days for inappropriate comments, not unlike that of Don Imus' recent firing by CBS and MSNBC.
The comments in question, occurred last week on the air. Opie and Anthony were making crude, sexual jokes about President's Bush Cabinet member, Condoleezza Rice, the First Lady, Laura Bush, and Queen Elizabeth II.
The show that has caused all of this hoopla occurred on May 9. Opie and Anthony, aired a skit with a fictitious man they call routinely, named Homeless Charlie. Homeless Charlie was talking to Opie and Anthony, during which the names of Rice, Bush, and the queen were mentioned, As Charlie heard each name, he used vulgar words to say that he wanted to have sex with them. They also described how Rice would react to a violent sex with Charlie while being punched in the face.
Opie and Anthony made light of the whole incident on their Monday radio show.
Last week, Opie and Anthony apologized for the sex comments. But on their Monday radio show, the two shock jocks took on a more defensive tone. They scrutinized the state of radio today and their disliking of the excessive, adverse reactions to comments made by them and other radio disc jockeys, such as Imus.
On the Monday show, Opie and Anthony said that "We're under the same scrutiny as NPR - it doesn't make sense."
Opie and Anthony said that they are sorry for Don Imus because his career is now "gone, just because he was trying to entertain people." Imus was fired last month by MSNBC and CBS for saying racist and sexist comments to describe the Rutgers women's basketball team.
The company that owns the Opie and Anthony radio show, XM Radio, which is in Washington. In a Tuesday statement, XM released a press statement. In it, XM says that the "Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them."
It is not known whether or not that Opie and Anthony will be paid during its thirty day suspension.
This is not the first time that Opie and Anthony have been punished for its controversial antics and comments.
Opie and Anthony used to be owned by CBS Radio. Back in 2002, the pair was fired for airing a call from two people, who said they were having sex in New York city's St. Patrick's Cathedral. While fired by CBS for that show, CBS still keeps them on the payroll as hosts of a syndicated but tamer radio show.
also no metion of them only being off of XM but still on CBs
