I listen mostly to Drum 'n' Bass when not in a Rock or Metal mood. My current favorite act out right now is Pendulum, but I also like D. Kay, Dillinja, Clipz, Logistics, AK1200...just to name a few.

I was a big time rave fiend back in the mid to late 90s. Didn't get into D'n'B until about a year after going to raves. Saw Dieselboy live on the mainstage and it was set.

It's hard to find good mix CDs anymore. 90% of the D'n'B CDs I have are like 6+ years old. Plus haven't made a rave in nearly 6 years. *sighs*

Trance for me is hit or miss. Paul Van Dyk seems to make a good song no matter what he does, but I never did like Tiesto much.

Put on some http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1889/72302189gx4.jpg any day and I'm there.

for dnb i use this site to get mixes...lots of good stuff here especially the teebee thread

http://www.dnbmovement.it/phpBB2/index.php

i listen to mostly edm (trance, jungle and dnb)...tiesto to me is god when it comes to music...his latest album Elements of Life is really good...

for dnb/jungle i am a huge dieselboy fan, datcyde, teebee, andy c, tech itch, ak 1200, dj dara and dj rap (old skool dj rap)...

i too am a former raver...the best rave i ever attended was whistle 3...which was off the fucking hook...cant tell you how fucked up i was and listening to q-bert scratch for an hour+ was incredible...

well, depends on what type of D&B you're looking for. Evil, hard pounding shit. Funky. Atmospheric. Jazzy. My two favorite represent two opposites. LTJ Bukem for Atmospheric, melodic, and sometimes a jazzy sound. Dieselboy for my evil and hard pounding stuff. Evol Intent is good too. Anything mentioned here is good. And it's true. Other than on vinyl, good DJ mixes of D&B are hard to find. Check out Ed Rush too.

I'm a house-head...progressive, electro, tech, minimal...i jump around sub-genre's...also really into nu-skool breaks and progressive breaks...Might want to check out BLIM or mixes by Adam Freeland or Danny McMillan or the band Hybrid...to name a few

If you're into jungle i'd agree with Pendulum (guys from Australia)...shit hits hard and has very distinct synths...their Essential Mix from a few years back was nasty...I dig Aphrodite and DJ Zinc

Glad to see i'm not the only EDM guy on this board

No i wouldn't consider it DnB at all...some of their stuff has been remixed into DnB tunes (Out of Space remix)...they are all over the map though with respect to a genre...industrial stuff...

If you like DnB chances are you'll like breakbeat. Carefull though. There are many types. Some heavy, some light. Florida-style breaks are real light (DJ Baby Anne). But for the real good breakbeat stuff, dodisman mentioned Adam Freeland. That fucker is great. Often dubbed "The Prince of Breaks". Saw him in San Antonio a while back. Great live DJ. Look into Hyper. He has two real good cds out. One of them is with his band also called Hyper. That cd is called "We Control". Very good album. His DJ Mix cd entitled "Wired" is one of the best break DJ mixes I've heard along with The Crystal Method's "Community Service II". Very solid beats. Right now I'm hitting the Progressive house stuff so I havn't been keeping up with the DnB and breaks scene that much. Another recommendation is DJ Icey's "Disco Rodeo". Just got it last night. Very good.

I'm afraid we're in the minority. No biggy though. I used to have a shit load of Essential Mixes back when trance was at it's peak (1998-2002). Lost them all. Anybody know of a place where I can get new and old essential mixes? I used to get them from Audiogalaxy when it was alive.

Technically, there is. To anyone that's been to a rave more than a handful of times can tell the difference.

By the way, anyone know when fucking Photek is coming out with his next album? Supposedly he was releasing it this summer. Looks like that isn't gonna happen.

What's the difference?

jungle and drum n bass are much more lively than house...usually around 160-180 bpm...while house sits in the 120-140 range...house music is usually more "soulful" while drum and bass is much more upbeat and heavy basslines...

to people who do not listen to either house can seem repititous while DnB sounds like broken drums and awkward styling...

i would say to really hear the difference you listen to some danny tenaglia for house then listen to tee bee or dieselboy for jungle/dnb...you will notice a huge difference between them...

The MAJOR differences in Drum-n-Bass/Jungle from the 4 on the floor stuff is the drum pattern first (the famous "Amen Break") and then very prominent basslines that just roll like you indicated at 160-180 BPM although other genres can push into that BPM range...Drum-n-Bass should jump right out as instantly recognizable...shouldn't even be a question as to what you're listening to....To me its the most intricate of electronica to listen to but just beats me down after a while...i can usually hang for an hour set but i couldn't be in a jungle room for longer then that...

Drum 'n' Bass is also an acquired taste. First time I heard it at a party I fucking hated it. Then I saw AK1200 live and fucking fell in love. I personally dislike Two Step as far as D'n'B goes. As mentioned above D'n'B is very recognizable by the beat alone. Vocals can be hit or miss, but I find D'n'B easier to mix in with popular music than any other form, although I'm not a huge fan.

Now if you want some bad ass Trance...listen to Rabbit in the Moon. But good luck finding anything on CD or mp3. F.L.O.O.R.I.D.A. is his only original track release that I'm aware of. His fucking visual live show with Bunny is insane. I wonder if he even does shows anymore. Probably the best overall live P.A. you could ever see at a rave.

Tiesto and Oakenfold are overrated if you ask me. Give me some Van Dyk any day.

On saturday I went to San Antonio to see Miss Nine. She's a progressive house DJ under Yoshitoshi (managed by Deep Dish). I have seen MANY DJs including top 10 to top 100 ones. Oakenfold to Adam Freeland. And this girl blew them away. Best DJ I've seen thus far. She tore the place apart. Dropping heavy beats and bass lines and remixes of old songs that sounded amazing (Remixes of Eddie Murphey's "Party All the Time" (Remixed by Sharam, half of Deep Dish) and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"). And she looked amazing doing it too (see signature. a .gif I made of video I took). She's convinced me to trade in my Technics for Pioneer CDJ-1000MK3s. Her mixing was flawless! (Oakenfold double beated a few times and missed cues!) She nearly let a beat slide off but caught it in time. I highly recommend her for you house heads like me or just a dance/electronic music fan like me. She's become my #1 DJ right now over taking Hernan Cattaneo. OVERALL: 5 out 5 stars.

Planning on going to go see Gabriel & Dresden on Sept. 22 also in S.A. Also want to go see Charles FeelGood on the 8th but not too sure about that one.

Holy shit this thread rules.

I posted this thread over a year ago, and it went absolutely nowhere...
http://www.wackbag.com/showthread.php?t=48801

My tastes have since changed a bit and become much more refined. I've come to love trance A LOT more, and I really don't care for house much anymore. It's pretty much dead or in some weird place right now, especially vocal house. I've been following Matt Darey's 'global domination' and 'nocturnal' shows for a while now, and both are amazing. AVB's ASOT (a state of trance) is absolutely fantastic. Victor Dinaire's 'lost episode' show is also a top favorite. All can be easily found through www.mininova.org and Darey posts some shows right on his website, www.mattdarey.com .

Lately, I've been going crazy for the tracks Liquid Todd puts out on Sirius 34. (I used to LOVE his 'solid state' show on 92.3 krock a while back!) The breaks, electro-pop, and rock remixes on that channel are fucking fantastic. If you haven't heard it before, do yourself a favor and sign up for a free 3-day trial of sirius online. If you really like it, I may or may not know how to keep it for free, indefinitely, without re-subbing for a free trial with a new email address every 3 days. PM me for info.

I'm going to research all the links and artists posted in this thread so far, but I have one specific request. I'd really like to hear some very dreamy/ambient DNB. Not the usual in your face style, but still with the heavy basslines and shit.

Also, please check out my friend Marcello (DJ Eco) at www.myspace.com/djeco . He's a FANTASTIC trance/tech DJ with some of the smoothest transitions I've ever heard. His production is getting better and better with time, and what you hear on his page isn't half as good as some of the stuff he sends me.

Well...finding a DJ that does a whole set of that is hard, but one man comes to mind. Jamie Myerson. He is the king of that. Find "Music for the Lonely". Also, Paul Oakenfold's Global Underground Live in Oslo Disc 2. The first 3-5 tracks are just that. Beautiful stuff. I have a few records of that type. I'll try to digitalize them and send them your way as soon as I have time.

My tastes have changed as well. The Crystal Method got me into the entire thing when I was in 5th heading into 6th grade with Vegas. Then came Orbital. So breaks and expirimental will always be at the top of my list. Then I got into the whole Trance movement in 1999-2002 The Progressive Trance in 2002-2005. And now I'm into the Progressive House, Electro House, and Deep House movement. But there are styles that I have ALWAYS and I think will always be more than just a movement. Breaks, D&B, Expirimental, and Big Beat. I still pull out some of my 1999 Essential Mixes and listen to them once in a while.

My list of favorite DJs also flip flop all the time. (this does not include bands, ex: The Crystal Method, UNKLE, Underworld, etc.). As of now:

1) Miss Nine
2) Hernan Cattaneo
3) Sultan
4) Deep Dish
5...no five.

I know Sirius has a better variety of Electronic/Dance channels (especially with their pure progressive house channel). Which is why, personally, I'm pulling for the merger. O&A with Sirius Dance channels.

Don't you guys hate it when a DJ spins a track that is just lovely and you fall in love with it, but you don't know the name of the track? That crap KILLS ME! I'm stuck on one right now. On another note, there is a new breaks track out there called 'Universal Truth' by Matrix & Futurebound that is fantastic and really worth checking out.

EDIT

I said to my friend, hey I found the hottest female DJ out there, and he already knew who Miss Nine was. He goes, I'll take your Miss Nine and raise you one. So now K-Swing is officially the hottest female DJ anyway, and I don't think it's going to be possible to change my mind about this one.....

When I first heard that Miss Nine was a model that turned DJ I dismissed her as a legit act. I mostly do that with most female acts. They use their "I'm hot!" side to sell tickets. There are even some topless DJs out there (DJ Portia Surreal). But then I found out she was under Yoshitoshi, which is my favorite record label and she was picked by Deep Dish and constantly tours with them. So I gave in and tried her out and baught her Yoshitoshi Ibiza mix cd. That cd changed my opinion completely for her. It was the first Mix cd to really draw me in since Deep Dish's Global Underground: Toronto. But her live set was just as amazing. The combination is important. Oakenfold: Great Mix cd's. ok live. Freeland: Great live. Weak cd's. Hyper: Semi-good cd's. Great live.

Another hot DJ out there is DJ Rap. Her "Learning Curve" is all original production which is fantastic! BUUUT, her spinning stinks. Same with Baby Ann. Her mixes are ok, but don't draw you in or leave you wanting more. Her light florida breaks are too soft for me. Sandra Collins is ok. Too trancey for me. And not nearly as hot as any of the ones we've posted.

DAAAAMN Sprite! That DJ is hot. Gotta give her a try. But Miss Nine has that cute, simple, approachable beauty. She is tall though! 5'8-6 easy. Made me feel horrible at 5'5 when I took a picture with her. And she was shy around the crowd. It was adorable! Kinda hard to tear me away from Miss Nine now. Takes the cake for #1 DJ musically and looks wise too.

absolutely no way you can go wrong with that. Their Singles 93-03 is a double cd set and is one of the greatest. Gotta love the Chems. One of the many acts that I must see live. But they're at the top of the list. Has anybody seen them?

Do you know that you have one of the greatest sigs. It litterally gives me a woody every time I see it. An instant woody. Love it!

1: Armin Van Buuren
2: Tiësto

I don't agree with more than a couple of those on the list, but I would indeed put AVB at the top simply because his ASOT shows bring A LOT of fantastic underground trance tracks into the spotlight, and the guy spins all over the world. I respect the fact that he is not another Oakenfold, and his head isn't as big as PVD's. Above & Beyond produce some AMAZING shit, and I equate them to The Thrillseekers. I think they got together on some mixes or tracks, but I can't recall which right now.

Carl Cox is extremely talented, and though his vocal house style isn't what I enjoy any more, I think it's cool he's an ONA fan and sends instant feedbacks from time to time even after ONA smashed the XM dance channels. They made a mockery of electronic dance music and kinda tooled on Carl, but he hung in there on the phone, and they seem to have respected him for it; shows the guy has a good sense of humor. :)

On a side note, I'd like to see the Chemical Bros. in that list. They bridge the gap between mainstream electronic dance music and all sub-genres. I'm also glad to see David Guetta in that list because 90% of tracks he produces AND remixes are absolute favorites of mine. The guy almost never puts his name on a throwaway track, and for that I respect him.

Far - in reference to your post, I have not heard much of Eddie Halliwell, however, my good friend DJ ECO is performing with him soon! *EDIT* - if you want on the guest list for this just let me know. Details.....

sorry minhaj...i pretty much hate all forms of house except for certain deep house mixes....but house is utter garbage in my eyes...

honestly...it's getting there...It's suffering the same fate trance did in the early 2000s. It got mainstream where it became a Club craze and was littered with "club anthems". Posers that say they're into the music when they're just these muscle heads going to clubs thinking they dig the music and try acting like they know it. When they're nothing but club rats. Thats why little by little I'm tearing away from the house scene and spinning nothing but drum & bass, ambient, and breakbeat.

Today I just picked up some massive CDs. Underworld's latest "Oblivion with Bells", U.N.K.L.E.'s "War Stories". I havn't heard them yet but I know I won't be let down. This one is a must have. I just saw it today so it must have been released within the last weeks or so: Rabbit in the Moon "Decade". Their first full length cd. It comes with a bonus DVD with music videos and live footage. I really don't like dvds that come bundled with cds because most of them end up being utter crap but this DVD is amazing. It blew my mind. The videos are fucking tripped out and the live footage is amazing. I must catch them live one of these days. I highly recommend this cd.

Unerworld is some amazing shit, but are you equating them to house music? Perhaps you are not, but house IS dead. No one person can deny that.

I don't think house is suffering the same as trance did years ago, rather it has run it's course and anyone with good taste realizes that vocal trance, progressive trance, breaks, mash-ups, electronica and funky house are truly where the electronic music sound is headed.

Oh hell no they're not house.

The Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, UNKLE, Rabbit in the Moon, Underworld, Orbital are all in class of their own. Way above the house scene.

There is still some damn good progressive trance being made. But it's sad how the club craze is at house. Now there's a "house remix" of every song to where it makes me sick. Grant it, some are killer remixed but most are just duds to me. That's why Gabriel & Dresden are hitting it huge right now and are some of the biggest acts on tour right now. They specialize in vocal trance. I was lucky enough to see them live (I'll post pictures and vids when I have more time). It reminded me when I saw Oakenfold in 2001 one when he was in his prime. But for me ambient, breakbeat, hard techno, and drum and bass is where it's at right now. I'm planning on recording a D&B/Ambient DJ mix soon now that I'm out of school. I'll find a way to post it.

I'm ready to post a "rough draft" DJ mix. I'm gonna record a serious one after this but for now this should do. The mixing isn't as crisp as it would or will be because...well...it's a rough draft. I do "rough draft mixes" to see how certain tracks would flow key wise and if the melodies would tie together good. It's kinda like a "map" for the main mix I'll record. So tell me what you all think...content wise...I know the mixing stinks. I start out with melodic and at times ambient breakbeats then go into the more hard hitting, nastier breaks.

This is actually ruining my day. I've seen them four times live and one of them was with the legendary Orbital. But I've never seen them spin so I've been wanting to do that. I've seen some video of them DJing on youtube and it seems they bring the same type of intensity as their live shows. I'm trying to persuade my family to leave on sunday instead of saturday. That way I can leave friday afternoon, get there for the dubfire show, stay over at a cheap ass motel 6, and then head to the TCM show and come back to leave sunday. And also if my friends don't flake out. :arrrh::arrrh::arrrh:

Now on groovetickets.com it says it's on wed, the 12th. Which sucks cause I'll probably have mid-terms. But the flyer says the 15th. I'll probably call the venue to see which one is accurate.

BusyChild, glad to see you made a mix! I see you took my advice in uploading it to Megaupload, however, it's obviously too large a file for the free service. Yousendit is decent too, but the file size is again too large.

I can either send you a program that will allow you to convert the file format or cut the size down. What program are you using to record the mix, and more importantly, what quality and format is it set to save as? It may be easier for you to send me the mix VIA AIM and let me edit it for you, or you can use http://transferbigfiles.com/.

I'd also like to note that the General MIDI remix of Moby - Alice is pretty much the fucking sickest and best breaks remix of 2008 so far. PM me if you'd like to hear it.

I recorded a 3 track Progressive Breaks mix. It's more melodic than your average breaks. I will soon record a breaks mix that starts off dirty as your typical breaks mix then lead into these three melodic ones. I'm uploading it as we speak.

what are some of your fav EDM albums or what are selections you would choose to tell a newbie about if asked???

a classic album is Crystal Method - Vegas; Tiesto - Live at Innercity Amsterdam; dj micro - tech mix 2.0, dieselboy - system upgrade; jon the dentist - damn trance, and for single songs - Anomoly-calling your name; tiesto's remix of delerium's mix - silence; art of trance - madagascar

that is just a quick start... i will continue to add albums as we move forward...

Newbies need jump up jungle first, hardcore DNB introduced later on. I would let them listen to Aphrodite's "Urban Jungle" first, then after a few hours of coke or pills let them listen to better DNB.......Pendulum, Kosheen, LTJ Bukem,etc..................

Any live set by Danny Howells (JJJ Mixups, Essential Mixes, club mixes like old ARC sets...tough to go wrong with Danny Howells.

I've been really into Audiofly stuff lately...You can snag a decent amount of their lives mixes online. The 2 hour set they did at WMC this year for Supernature was brilliant.

Sasha's Involver

Adam Freeland On Tour
Adam Freeland FabricLive16

James Lavelle FabricLive1

Most live stuff from James Zabiela is good.

Cedric Gervais side of Essential Mix from WMC 2008 was killer

For studio stuff i'm more into AIR, M83 stuff for electronica...not into a ton of produced mix set stuff...doesn't do it for me like the live stuff.

M83 stuff .

I fucking love M83!!! I would love making short films to some of their songs. It's so different from the cookie cutter stuff that's out there. Play it LOUD for any person thats high or real drunk and it'll scare the shit out of them.

Not at all. I find their change of synths in the studio to guitars for live shows interesting. Changes the sound completely. "America" and "Car Chase Terror!" are two of my favorites. I get chills every time.

Er7 Radio (http://er7radio.com/)

Found this gem. They upload all of the Essential Mixes from the BBC Radio 1. They are all current and updates the latest one. You have an option to download them via Torrent or Megaupload. I've always been a big fan of Radio 1's Essential mix since I first downloaded "Essential Mix: Paul Oakenfold Live in Havana, Cuba" back in 1999. Since then I've downloaded some classics. But after they shut down my main essential mix source, I had been out of touch with them for the last couple of years. But now I found this site and it has made me VERY VERY happy. Check out the mix by MSTRKRFT. Fucking insane.

For those that don't know: Essential Mix is a very famous Dance/Electronica 2 hour show during the wee hours of Saturday night in London (plus other parts of the UK). Each show features a DJ/Producer. They either are recorded live from a club or event, or a recorded mix made for the show or can be spinning live in studio. They feature almost everybody and every style like Paul Oakenfold, Adam Freeland, Carl Cox, Moby, UNKLE, etc. etc. They showcase everything from trance to drum and bass to experimental. The show has built a cult following through it's years with it's availability on web sites. When I first started listenning back in '99 they would constantly feature trance (that's when it was good and popular) with Oakenfold, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke, Sasha, and Digweed. But with the explosion of DJs out there, now it's uncommon to hear the same DJ twice. It's a great way to get exposed to some great new DJs, producers, and tracks.

XM channel 80 used to play DNB every day from 11 to 1 PM EST. Do any of the other channels have a time that they play DNB exclusively?

Here is a track from The Crystal Method's new album. I think is sounds fucking amazing. Again, taking it a different direction.

Orbit used to do the show, "Pressure", on XM80 originally from 11am-1pm EST then from 3am-5am EST. He hasn't been on in some time. I was listening to him till Thanksgiving and checked back in after New Years and his show wasn't on. Did a search on xmradio.com and there was no mention of his show. Sucks too man, because Orbit played some great Jungle/DnB.

well no one is at xm 80 anymore. The channel was nixed several days ago. I was pissed at first, but am very receptive to the cut. Sirius has a MUCH better underground dance channel. It sucks cause I don't think they have as much deep house as the move had, but hopefully the techy and harder underground side of things will be better represented now.

that's one of the things that disappointed me about XM. Their dance channels weren't exactly the best. So I stuck to O&A and my ipod. Sirius has that all electronic/experimental/breakbeat channel "Boom Box". So naturally I was pulling for the merger (O&A, NFL, Better Dance Channels). Plus their chill is also better. Hopefully we can get a mass email/feedback push to add at least one more EDM channel.

An AMAZING track I've been hooked on since 1999 is Jamie Myerson's "Music for the Lonely". Awesome ambient/melodic drum n bass track with an odd/unique beat. Oakenfold put it on his Global Underground: Oslo cd (CD 2 of that has some of the best ambient drum and bass I have ever heard). I've been looking for "Music for the Lonely" on vinyl since I first heard in '99 and I just found it and ordered it from Tokyo. Amazing stuff.

Great tracks man. Tenaglia's Global Underground: Athens is one of my classics. The Chemical Brothers are about to release a new "greatest hits" type cd that has some sort of twist to it. Very excited about that.

BTW, Sobi. I took a listen to your mix and loved it. Great stuff man. A couple of friends and I were jamming out to it two saturdays ago on the way to a party.

haha, that'd be sweet. I've got a gig this Saturday. It's gonna be a block party. They want a 3 hour set. That has me a little bit nervous. I'm used to the 1 and a half hour/2 hour set. I'm going to have to extend the music and probably change styles multiple times in between. I'm pretty stoked, though. They're expecting a pretty big crowd so hopefully I don't trainwreck (never have but hey...you never know with alcohol). I'll see if I can record it and post it.

Still available online surprisingly. I listened to a few tracks and it wasn't typical of the genres they played on The Move before. Odd.
