What impression have you guys gotten from watching American Hot Rod with Boyd's shop?
I have watched those episodes and basically thought it was a bunch of monkeys working there, ******-rigging cars together. Watching it makes me wonder how people would still pay six figures for his "creations".
Skipping to his former employee, Chip Foose, he seems to run a much different environment, with a staff that looks and creates completely different from Boyd, in a more cohesive manner (as far as the shows go), without shop relics running around.

chip foose is never gonna put out a car that he wouldnt want himself. that goes for his worksmanship aswell. on the other hand boyd is a grumpy old man who could barely clean a carborator.

Boyd seems like an ass who has screwed over friends and investors over the years. His wheel company declared bankruptcy and he got himself into some legal trouble over emissions and taxes. I wonder if the crew of his shop is that bad or if it's just for the show, to make drama and an attempt at humor.

Well, Foose worked for him and was forced out when Boyd went bankrupt. Then Foose got that designer kid that didn't have movement in his face to design for him, thus getting him canned. The next thing is that Boyd's painter left and now is on Foose's show. He seemed like the only one in that shop that wasn't a hack and had to deal with never seeing his family because of this insane schedules Boyd was running.
Sorry, but I'm not a fan of cars hacked together with these insane deadlines, then being passed off as showcars. They're hacked together and made to look good, but I can't imagine any great attention to detail, fitting of the price.

That's actually a pretty good set of reasons.

Yup...gotta agree. Boyd did a nice 57 that I liked but for the most part, his cars always come across as "tacky" to me. Foose hasn't put out one single car that I haven't drooled over.

i would end up punching dwane right in the fucking mouf.
now that roy is gone i can only imagine how bad the hack jobs have gotten, roy was the back bone of boyd's business for years.

i like foose, his cars are all pretty hot for the most part. the few times i have watched that horrible show with Boyd i wonder how anyone would want to work for him or how people could stand to be his friend.

Boyd is an ass that spends most of his time in the office worrying about supplying Jegs (no more) or worrying about which mag to put his next hackjob with yellow paint.
Foose is a genius, as I saw in Overhaulin' the guy is actually a brilliant artist/designer with lots of creativity. Not only that, but he appears to get in there and do some dirty work himself. His crew seems to be more cohesive with one another and they all seem to have a bit of artistic/tradesman skill and license that aligns with Foose's ideas.
I'm sure Foose learned a lot from how Boyd ran his shop and treated people, so he runs his shop accordingly.

Notice they never really replaced Roy with any experienced metal guy? They just moved a couple of the young guys over to that area of the shop and let them start cutting. If I am going to spend $100,000 or more on my ride it won't be that shop building it.

That show of Boyd's opened my eyes. EVERYTHING they make is pre-fabbed, except for his wheels.
ooooooohhhhh look at me and my fancy CNC machine. Fuck off.

The wheels is really where his profit is, the cars are just show pieces/advertising. Same thing with most those custom places. Jesse James makes his $$$ more from mass producing his tanks and fenders than any bike he makes.

Chip Foose's operation just seems to work more cohesivlely. Boyds guys do nothing but bitch. Not to mention that Boyd seems like a stuck up cunt who does it for the pay check and he never really works on the cars. Foose really seems to enjoy what he's doing and actually gets his hands dirty.

jesse james makes more money selling Tshirts then he ever did building bikes (and good for him) i dont fault any of these guys for profiting from there marketing ability (OCC is a perfect example, and i say hooray for them), i also kind of like that these shows legitimize what ive spent my life doing, for the most part people think that those who choose to work with there hands are stupid or lazy, i HATE that mentality. as for working for one of those guys i know i could hack it, i can do the work and have dealt with bigger assholes than anyone on those shows. ive often thought of sending in some footage of my idiot boss up to his antics, if he wasnt such a nut i know i could sell it to them, but he's so fucking crazy he would either never say any thing on camera or would shun or attack the camera crew. let alone the fact that they would have to spend the entire editing budget bleeping out ****** and fuck

Boyd took his guys to the go cart track once. Does Foose care enough to do that for his crew?

I for one can't stand Foose's cars. They are dull dull dull. Boyd may be an ass, but at least it does not look like he's selling the same car over and over again.

foose does seem to have a set style, you can pick out a foose design in a crowd but that is what making a name for your self is all about, foose is an artist first and a car builder second, he has his own "style" and he seems to use it over and over, boyd builds other peoples cars, not necessarily his own, and he admits that any good car starts with some one else's idea then he builds it. right now im building a car from scratch, there is so much shit that you have to come up with that you just need help sometimes.
