I'm thinking of buying a certified pre-owned 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was wondering if anybody owned one or has owned a JGC in the past. I hear some great things about them (200K miles) and some awful things (shitty transmissions).

Any owners out there with some advice?

Thanks

When I saw the thread title I was going to race in and warn you about the transmission, but it appears you have that covered.

Thanks. In a perfect world i'd get a 4runner but those things are f'ing expensive.

The jeep grand cherokees look great, but the transmission issue scares me.

I'm in the biz and they also have had fuel pump problems. The pump is in the
tank so when it fails you are looking at about 6 bills to fix it.

Thanks for that info, ballbuster. I'm gonna have to look at some other options, like an old 4runner.

I have owned one for 2 years and it is by far the best SUV I have ever owned. I have not put any $$$ into repairs and have 148,000 miles on it.

I have owned 2 Explorers, 1 Expedition and a Nissan Pathfinder.

Good Luck.

Not questioning you, because I know you'd know more than anyone here.

But, isn't the pump in the tank for practically any modern fuel-injected vehicle?

Are the Jeeps as prone to fuel-pump problems as GM trucks have been in recent (last 10) years?

My mom has a GC. Its great. The ones you're hearing that go 200k are the 4.0 In-line 6s. Those motors are great. I just bought a brand new left over 06 Wrangler with the 4.0. My cousin has a 4.0 cherokee from the 90s with over 150k and its still running strong. Chrysler has always been a bit questionable with the transmissions but if maintained and fluids changed it will last a good long time. One other thing is Chrysler brakes are GARBAGE. They warp in no time. I had like 16k on my Dak and the brakes warped and I"m not hard on brakes. When you need them just upgrade to some cross drilled rotors and ceramic pads and you'll be golden. I think you'll be happy if you get the GC. If you have any other questions I have some forums you can check out. Lots of good info. PM if you're interested.

the doors fall off around 100k, well accurately they break at were the hinges weld to the body and sometimes on the door side, but i will cavities that with i haven't fixed any in a few years so either i don't fix as many doors or there not breaking like they used to. bb1 is right about the fuel pumps, another thing is there gas guzzlers, i do believe the break problem has been corrected, i had a durango that was eating a set of front pads every 7k and rotors every other pad change but i haven't had that problem in a while and don't see as many , i think they changed the materials that the rotors were made of

Just about all the cars and trucks made since the early 90's do have the
pumps located in the tank. The only thing I have noticed is that Jeep had
some major problems and they seemed to fail at a larger rate than other cars.
There was even a tech bulletin put out by Jeep where you need to replace
the whole tank along with the pump assy because the lining used in the tank
degraded and caused the pump to fail. If you don't replace the tank the new
pump can fail again in very short order. I'd just stay away from Jeep
products from what I've seen.

Don't know if you're just a Jeep guy, but check out the Trailblazer. I have an
04 and it's been great so far. It can't touch the Jeep for off-roading
though if that's what you might use it for.

I have a 2001 Jeep GC...I have had rotor issues and have replaced my tires twice...seem to really wear on the car...I just had a coolant fan replaced this week and my steering shaft/column was so loose it was almost coming off which was causing insane shaking when accelerating and stopping so that is being fixed this week too...beyond those issues i have had no problems...runs great at around 100K so far

from my experience 100k is all you can expect out of an american car before having to start fixing strange shit. unless its a total highway car (and they are rarerr than you might bleve) jeeps eat tires because there heavy same with the beaks and the gas guzzeling, the streight 6 is a bullet proof motor unless your an idot

02 Isuzu Trooper, for the money, more truck and a more gooder engine. Just my thoughts. I have had two. A 95 and 02. I sold my 95 with 247000 on it and my buddy is still driving it. My 02 is very big and it is very dependable.

Ever consider a 2nd gen Xterra instead? They are also great trucks and extremely reliable. Fast as balls too.

I live in basically the same area as FM....we're at about 3.40 a gallon...But the way things are going those prices don't seem so impossible.

I have a 1998 Cherokee Limited with a 5.2 engine. The tranny was starting to go out and slip once the truck hit about 100k. The fuel pressure regulator has always sucked in it when I bought it at 65k. You have to turn the engine over for about 15 seconds for it to fire...I hear its common. Funny, that when I rolled the fucker at 132k on an Icy road, after being in the garage for 3 months being fixed and having the frame straightened, the tranny problems went away (so far, now at 150k)..... however the front axle and hub assy is clanking like a chatty teenager at every bump I hit. Love the car, costs too damn much to keep driving though ('specially with gas prices)

we have an o7'...love it...had the o4 before this one...loved that one too...

we got the best deal at Manhattan Jeep...They were fair to us, and spoke to us with respect....The guys on Route 9 are assholes...I actually told one particular "hard selling" jerk off that the next word out of his mouth meant he'd be bleeding from it.

...Oh yeah...I'm a real tough guy...I threatened an out of shape car salesman...what a douche I am...but he was a serious dick head.

My old man has a 2005 with the V8. He has had to take it in for all sorts of warranty work. Speed sensors, ac problems and other little shit that Chrysler is famous for.

For some reason, Dodge and Chrysler run nice for about the first 20k then turn to shit. I drove company cars for years and the Chrysler products always crapped out early.
