Old Aerosmith was good. " Toys in the attic" " Rocks"

I think a strong front runner could be " Lynrd Skynrd" too.

kinda old school but I always loved " Kansas" too.

theres to many.

Pearl Jam

Nirvana was great, but didn't cut it...you have to be around for awhile

That's like saying Experience (Hendrix) was...it was a great band, great music, just didn't get it done...

to me, to be the best, you gotta stick around ...just my opinion

Absolutely
05-24-2007, 08:23 PM
Greatest American band?

Grateful Dead, though I may be a little bias.

Aerosmith, Kansas, Boston? Ewww.
Nirvana wasn't around long enough.
Allman Brothers isn't a bad choice either, but I gotta say The Dead.
What about the stupid Doors, who I Hate

highway23
05-24-2007, 08:27 PM
The Dead is a solid choice...I would say that Pearl Jam has the same type of following...great albums, amazing live shows.

Phish wasn't too bad either, though I'm not a huge fan of their music, you can't deny the impact that they had on a generation, nor that Tre is an amazing guitarist.

Yeah, old Aerosmith was good...the rest stinks.

Boston and Kansas, I agree...ewww...

The Doors and R.E.M....I wouldn't argue with

Absolutely
05-24-2007, 08:29 PM
It makes you realize that most "Great Bands" aren't from the states.
Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stones, Beatles etc...

What about CCR?

CM Mark
05-24-2007, 08:32 PM
Nirvana, The Doors, CCR is up there, um, my brain is farting so I'll stop now

Absolutely
05-24-2007, 08:34 PM
Though I hate them, I think a lot of people started hating them after they saw The Big Lebowski, I think a lot of people would say The Eagles.

No Beach Boys mentions?

Let's Poll this shit

highway23
05-24-2007, 08:38 PM
More importantly, what do you think actually constitutes a "Great" band?

CCR was a band for what...a little over ten years? That's coming close in my book. They were a solid band...though I love them, and their sound was really tight, but a lot of their stuff truly sounds alike.

To me, you've got to have great: lead vocals, guitarists, drummer, a minimally solid bassist, and lyrics that kick ass. Aside from this, you've got to be an original live show. Because that is what truly makes a "Great" band...great.

no?

I fucking hate the Eagles...but I can respect what they did.

Beach Boys...not too shabby. Pet Sounds is still one of the best albums ever, in my book.

Absolutely
05-24-2007, 08:47 PM
I could go either way with the longevity thing.
Just because you were only around for 5 years or whatever doesn't make you any less of a great band than someone like Kansas who has hung around long enough be able to play Mid-Montana State Carnivals.

highway23
05-24-2007, 08:49 PM
then add Alice in Chains to the list :)

Absolutely
05-24-2007, 09:03 PM
Can't "Nirvana" just cover every grungish band that hit around 1994?
Candelbox, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Seven Mary Three

They're all the same to me.

highway23
05-24-2007, 09:08 PM
Which one is still around?

Pumpkins were good

SM3 and Candlebox - one album wonders (those albums weren't bad)

Nirvana and Pearl Jam really weren't that alike, Nirvana stuck to the punk side for most of their "career"...

Pearl Jam has created their own, stuck to doing what they wanted to do, and have done it consistently...

but as you can see, I'm quite biased

FMDoug
05-24-2007, 09:17 PM
Springsteen and the E Street Band
CCR
Beach Boys
Allmans
Buffalo Springfield (Even though Neil is from Canada, the rest aren't)
The Dead
I also want to say The Band but they are really from Canada
The Doors

Aerosmith
Eh? Some songs are amazing but i think a good majority stink

Nowadays
White Stripes
Bright Eyes
Foo Fighters

I don't think Elvis counts as a "band" if that's the case the winner is Bob Dylan hands down and you'd have to mention Springsteen though the E-Street band is Alright I guess.

that said the only answer can be the Grateful Dead. 40 years of live touring over 4,000 shows and tons of great music.

Agree, based on touring and their mixture of basically every style of music imaginable. Plus I think they meet the requirements of someone's idea for a "Great Band" a few posts ago: Great lyrics, great vocals (although many will disagree) Great guitarists (Jerry, and you can argue Weir is great with a very unique style), two great drummers, and a widely recognized great bassist in Lesh.

Grateful Dead win, Allman Brother in a close second, and reluctantly I have the Beach Boys showing.

When I think "American rock band" I think of Aerosmith. Even after they sobered up, they were still good through "Get a Grip". Ever since Armageddon it's over Johnny. Still, that was 22 solid years.

Pearl Jam would be up there for me. You can't lump them in with "any of those grunge bands from 1994" because every single one of those bands is gone except for Pearl Jam.

KISS!!!

Rounding out the Top 10:
2) The Doors
3) Metallica
4) Bon Jovi
5) The Eagles
6) Grateful Dead
7) Aerosmith
8) Pearl Jam
9) Allman Bros. Band
10) The Beach Boys

Could have been great, but not enough material to fairly judge them, so just a great missed opportunity:
Guns N Roses
Nirvana
Boston
Lynard Skynard

Just missed the top 10, but some other great American bands:
Tesla
The Motley Crue
Phish
Collective Soul

I have to go with Metallica on that. They still sell a crapload of albums after 25 years, huge concert draw, etc.

Surprised nobody mentioned Kiss. Their crap in the late 80's sucked AIDS ridden cock, but they had a pretty big impact on US culture with the whole makeup/aura deal, sold a ton of albums, and have the record for most gold albums by a band in the US.

I'd go with GNR, Aerosmith and Metallica.

I know Aerosmith hasn't really had a kick ass song lately(Nine Lives wasn't that bad). As for Metallica, I'd go with Metallica from the Black album to the stuff before that. After it they went downhill(Although I do like the song "King Nothing" off "Load").
They do however know how to give one great concert. I remember to one of their shows in 97 and it was a nice mix of old and new stuff. For a band that's been around as long as they have, that was the smart thing to do in my book. They do know alot of the people seeing them live are the older fans so why not give them what they want to hear too right?

Hands down, The Doors. They were "Alternative" before anyone knew what Alternative was. If you look back at American culture their music and the lifestyle created from it shaped a shitload of it.

There really aren't many other bands America could use as an example to show "hey, we're cool too" like The Doors.
