Since it's come up in the pit bull / vick threads... what are the best personality breeds of dogs and cats? I'm sure lots of Wackbaggers are planning on getting pets, maybe this thread can help them make a great choice.
Of course it is all subjective what makes a great personality. Trainability, intelligence, non-attackingness, cleanliness, etc. are all probably universal though. And I assume nobody wants one of those aloof emo cats.

For cats, the main coon is pretty nice. It's a long hair that doesn't shed all that much and has a friendly personality.

German Shepard. I rescued a stray GS when I was in high school and he turned out to be the most loyal and intelligent dog I ever owned.
I have a Rotti-Shep mix now, again smart, loyal and protective but, not in an aggressive manner.

I hear Shiloh Shepards are a variant of German Shepards that are even more intelligent and family friendly. They're bigger though.

Best overall family dog IMHO is a Laborador Retriever. Close second is my beloved Airedale Terrier. Terriers can be stubborn and bullheaded, which is the only reason I rated the Lab higher. For a new dog owner, an Airedale can be a bit much to handle.

I would second the Airedale for the best dog. I've had 2, both had great character and intelligence.
I think Ragdolls are a cool cat breed, since they seem to act more similar to a dog than any other cat that I have seen.

I agree with Sinn about Labs being great family dogs. But I also love the Standard Poodle for a smart, loyal, family dog. They are great dogs and dont have to have a show clip. However Sinn I shall part ways in the Terrier group and say that the best dog to own if you want a fun, smart, lovable, and most adorable dog in the world is the Bull Terrier. Colored or White doesn't matter. As with any terrier they might not be for the first time pet owner.

If you want one of the most loyal dogs around and one which somehow has this inner sense to protect kids, get a Newfoundland. I have one who is now 11 years old and over the years he amazed me as to what he has done. He grew up with my son and never let him out of his sight. Would not come in the house until my son did and even recently when my son was playing with our other dog, An old english sheep dog, my son was pretending he was being hurt, this dog basically dragged himself out to where my son was and basically would not allow the other dog near my son. I had to go out and get him since he didn't realize they were playing. This is despite the fact that at 11 years old, he has trouble with his hips and basically half dragged himself out there. At the same time, one of the most lovable dogs around. Even at 140 lbs. always thought he was a lap dog and would try and sit on everyone's lap so they would pet him.

Some breeds not a lot of people have heard of that are my 2nd and 3rd favorite breeds (I'm a big dog guy, I got no use for a dog <50 lbs).
Rodesian Ridgebacks are rediculously cool dogs. Loyal, strong as hell, very protective. They were bread from a mix of breeds in Rodesia (present day Zimbabwe) that included Great Danes and a local wild wolf type of breed. The goal in their breeding was to be fast and strong enough to protect people from lions.
Belgian Melenois's are pretty bad ass themselves. They're basically a German Shepherd, just bigger, short haired, and very work centric. Great dog if you're looking for something other than just a throw the stick type of breed, and they're incredible as guard dogs, police dogs, and any general attack dog type of role.
My favorite breed's the Great Dane though. Need like zero excercize, they love to just hang out and be a part of the people crowd. I had a Dane once I could take everywhere, and I mean everywhere. He'd just stroll along with me like he knew what was going on and no one ever said anything. Course, this was in small town, Texas, I doubt you're going to get that kind of reaction in New York or Jersey.

Terriers of almost any sort but only for those that have had dogs before and know how to train. Pits, airedales, any number, but they are smart, sometimes too smart for their own good. I also like the standard or giant schnauzer, the bouvier de flanders. Excellent work ethic and easily trainable, good temperment, low maintenance except fo the the bouvier because of the hair.
Cats... I like the maine coon and the abyssinian. The abby's are great, low short hair and they look like a minature mountain lion. They also love water. Good temperment. I also like the Tonkinese, but they can be very vocal.
What about smaller dogs that dont shed? Allergies are a prob in my house but Id like to get a little dog for my girls. Nothing that needs a ton of exercise but something loyal and playful.

Look at an Italian Greyhound or a Whippet. They do shed, but they dont cause allergy problems due to their wiry coat. They both do need exercize, but just putting them on a leash and going for a walk handles it for an IG. Whippets do need running space, a medium sized fenced yard should be fine. Good with kids, smart, VERY low maintainence (wipe em down with a wet towel basically), good disposition, and protective (but not in an agressive way). My next dog is going to be an Italian Greyhound, probably, or a small Whippet. I had a whippet when I was younger, lost him a few years ago.

I had a golden retriever as a boy (9-12) and I loved that dog. My parents divorce put an end to him. When I get a place with enough room (5+ acres, dogs need lots of running space!) I'll get another.

Old English Sheepdogs have great personalities...they are very bright and are great with kids....and are hypoallergenic

I'll second the Old English sheepdog. My sister had one that lived to 13. Great personality, rarely barked, awesome with kids. All the ones I've seen tend to be a bit clumsy. Also, though they are tall, they are much lighter (~75 lbs) than similar sized dogs like Labs. They are all fur, and yes, they are hypoallergenic.

I have a couple of year old Airedales. They are smart and happy, but if somebody lays a hand on my 5 yo, they will be torn asunder.
I also have a jagdterrier, he is a nice little faithful bloodthirsty psycho dog. Loves people, hates dogs.
Best dog I ever had was a rat terrier, he lasted 11 years and always knew where I was.
A weimaraner I had when I was a kid was a great dog, easiest to train of any, didn't shed.

I hear the Bichon Frise is the perfect pet dog. Joyous temperment, not prone to barking, no shedding. My aunt has one and I have to tell you, I can't not pick that thing up and squeeze it when it comes around. It's like a living stuffed animal.

That cat is about to have its ass kicked...
Tonight is the 2nd night in a row we took the dogs for a walk in the local park that I've noticed something different is going on. My Airedale is exhibiting a new hostility towards other dogs. It's very strange because he was fine the other times we've gone. But tonight, he barks (angrily) and I have to really restrain him when any other dog comes within sight.

boxers arent bad dogs, real sweet, playful and can be great with kids.
the little huskie mix terror in the pic is my exgf's dog. he was soooo much fun to play with, really smart very athletic and could have done some really cool tricks if she would have just trained him right.

Bernese Mountain Dog is by far the best dog I've ever had. She is friendly, has a ton of character, is fun, great with kids, protective of her people
My Tibetan Mastiff on the other hand couldn't give a fuck if you pet him or not. He gets his sucky moments about once a week, the rest of the time he chases shit out of the yard and sleeps

Main Coons are really consistent, definitely going to be the cat I get next. Ragdolls are cool except they are so friendly that they can't even hunt which odd to me. They're called ragdolls because they go limp when you put them in your lap and sometimes even when you just pick them up.

IG not good for kids. They are very delicate and are also sight hounds which means if they get loose forget it,they won't ever come back. Whippets are better for smal kids. I also love standard poodles with kids, no shedding, smart and just very low maintenance. Bichons SUCK! They aare so freakin difficult to potty train and can be spiteful. Unfortunatly I know about this than I really want. Right now I own 5 dogs and one cat. 3 chihuahuas, a bichon and a standard poodle. Best pet out of them all is the poodle but my chihuahua Jinx is my fav. She is smart and hates men;)

I have a boxer and she is the best dog for a family. She is very loving and she is very easy to take care of. I have had her for 10 years and I have never had a problem.
damn guys, you make me want to go get a dog right now!! It sounds like so much fun. I never had a dog. Had cats and had to give them away, too much hair and shedding. My apartment looked like tumbleweed city. My allergies were terrible.

That's because it takes around 3-4 years for newfies to begin to mature. They are just big dopes. They're great. That's why they call them gentle giants, they have no idea how big they are.

IMO, best dog to get is the Golden Doodle (as long as you don't mind bigger, lanky dogs).
Half standard poodle, half golden retriever. All the personality of the golden retriever with the athleticism of the standard poodle (those are the BIG poodles) and . . . NO SHEDING!! That's right . . . if you want a bigger, kick ass dog that won't shed all over the fn house, this is the dog to get. I can't say enough about mine . . . the worst part about owning one is saying the name of the kind of dog that you have.

I do love my Border Collie (but she is a little too smart for her own good)... I would defiantly suggest a German Shepherd... we have a 9 month old puppy who is a huge suck. If you do go for one make sure you go to a reputable breeder (duh) and I would stick to German blood lines if you can. If you are interested shoot me a PM and I will give you the name of the breeder we got ours.

As for a cat I would say a Maine Coon or a Burmese or a Russian Blue... very mellow and affectionate cats.

I agree with Steve Thrower. I have a Border Collie. She's great with kids, doesn't give a shit about my cats. She is a Border Collie which by nature is a demanding breed. They are other dog aggressive, and need room to run and things to keep themselves occupied. When my dog was much younger it ate the backseat of my moms car.
Cats are a mixed bag. Some of them you do all the right things and they still are demented spawn of satan. We rescued a pregnant torty and kept the kittens. Three of the nicest cats you'll ever meet.
