I know the bboys say that they wait on line, but I've always called it waiting in line and that's the only way I'd ever heard it before. Is on line some New York thing, or are the bboys just confusing everyone.
Yes it's a useless poll, but it's been pestering me for years.
I've heard them and used them interchangibly for all my life. I grew up on Long Island, within 10 minutes of where both O&A lived, so it may be a Long Island thing.

This is what I was going to post, but you beat me to it. People make the line and it moves with them. So you are in the line, not on it. There is nothing on the ground that defines the line.
I never even heard of "on" line before I started listening to this show. I thought it's just an east coast thing.
And if you say "queue" is it "in-queue" or "on-queue"?

It's always been in line for me, but my uncle from NJ says on line, although I guess he grew up in New York.
As for your last part, I've always heard/said it as I slept over at so-and-so's house, which makes a lot more sense to me.

right or wrong has nothing to do with how many fucknuts say something read my Carlin post... everyone says get ON a plane, but it makes no sense. therefor its wrong.
The only way Online would make any sense is if there were an actual line painted on the ground... then you would be considered on a line. As it usualy stands THE LINE is an erea, a space people stand,,, there for your in it... like being in a room.

But isn't a bunch of people standing in a row considered a LINE? Think about it: like a police LINE up. That's why I think people have come up to ask me "Am I online?". Or like when you go to the DMV or someplace and they have signs that say "Line starts here". There doesn't necessarily have to be a line on the ground, you FORM a line...

If you're the criminal ;) But if you're the one picking out the criminal would you say the guy IN the lineup or ON the lineup? I'd say IN the lineup for that particular situation....
BUT now say you're waiting at a cash register in a store: somebody cuts in front of you. Do you say "Excuse me I was IN LINE first" or ON Line first. For that I'd say ON line. I think it depends on the situation..

It's IN Line! This isn't the soda and pop discussion. The term is in line and years ago some slack-jawed, slurring ass started saying it wrong, and on line caught on.

what's worse is their explanation makes no sense
(there's an imaginary line that you're on)

lame
^^Basically, what this guy said. ^^
There's no need to even debate it, but... for the reluctant ones :
You're "online" if you're connected to a peripheral device.
The term was coined in the late 40's / early 50's.
It was used specifically in regard to computing environments.
Example?
30 years later when you'd dial up on your modem (a peripheral device), and connected to the internet, you called it being... what?
Yes, online.
l don't know of any place, or dictionary in the universe that defines it otherwise.
If, in fact, they use this term in your neck of the woods, your neck of the woods is inhabited by dumbasses.
If your brooklyn born grannie uses this term, in addition to being old and out of touch, shes also a dumbass.
What the fuck did she do before 1952? Or one better, before 1993 when America Online started making it a household word... She probably Stood IN line, I bet.
For further clarification, just incase people miss the point...
You're not "online", "on-line", or "on line" if you're physical body is standing IN a line, or standing in a formation. Or both, while waiting for something where there are people in front of you.
No exceptions to this rule. Zero.
If there was a line on the ground which you happened to be standing ON, then yes... I could somehow see it being applicable through semantics.
That you're actually on-a-line. Literally.
But otherwise, you're a just a moron if you find yourself in a filed formation anywhere at anytime, for any reason... saying you're "online".
I expect punkin and boo to say they was online for some govermint cheeze.
But not College educated Opie to say he was standing online with his chick waiting for who cares what.
Either or, don't be a moron and use incorrect words when you speak to people.
Or worse, try to validate your reasons for doing so after you say it.
Region and locale isn't an excuse for the fact you're making up words to fit what you want them to fit for.
It just makes you look more stupid.
That's all from me. I'm going into an alcohol coma.
what's that got to do with anything???? Go wait IN line for your punishment sir
