I got a serious virus or some spyware on my work computer. I wasn't running any anti-virus or anti-spyware software until after I suspected something happened. I tried installing a keycode generator for MS Visio (big mistake I know). Then the shit hit the fan.

I was able to install AVG antivirus and anti-spyware and it found and removed a bunch of crap, and as far as I could tell, they got rid of it but on reboot is where the problem starts.

The computer will start up, but it's like everything is completely frozen. I can go into Task Manager and start killing processes. But the system is still non-responsive and stays that way until I turn it off.

Other problem is that I cannot go into safe mode. I know how to get into it but the system just goes black and stays that way.

Other problem is that the system did not come with restore CD. (I was prompted when I first installed the PC, but chose to do it later... and never did)

I know I'm grasping at straws here, but I'm just looking for a way to get into the computer. I'd love to get into a DOS prompt or into Safe Mode but cannot.

Anyway, unless I can get into it some other way, I'm going to try to get a restore CD from HP

I'm running XP Pro on an HP xw 6400 workstation.

Transfer files that you want to keep and do a Clean Install.

are there any programs on your comp specific to your work? you might want to try the recovery console first if you can get your hands on a windows disk

hit F8 while your booting, you might get lucky and your comp may have the recovery console on it

go into program files from C hard drive and look for wacky folder names...then go to "FIND" in the start menu...and delete them from there.

if F8 doesnt work you need the windows cd, you can borrow one bc you just need the recovery console, either way
1) press R
2) hit 1 (or whatever # corresponds with the drive windows is on)
3) run CHKDSK
if that doesnt work
try FIXBOOT
type exit to reboot windows
if that doesnt work...
follow these instructions

if that doesnt work :idontknow

Seriously thanks for the tips. I can't do anything on the PC, recovering files, etc. Even though I have some shit that I'm going to hate to loose. Hopefully I can avoid that.

I can, however, borrow a restore CD from a different HP computer my co-worker has that will let me do what Angelfuck just said.

Been taking this shit home with me in my head and letting it ruin my weekend. Alas I have a little hope and will try that shit on Monday.

if you follow the instructions you shouldnt loose anything, youre just fixing errors in windows. I forgot to mention, run chkdsk first, then reboot, that should work by itself. If it doesnt try the other options.

The best and easiest way to get into your computer to retrieve files is download the Ultimate Boot Disk and burn it to CD, if you have another computer to do this on.

Boot from this CD, its basically loads XP off the CD and there's tons of utilities and file explorers to use.

You can backup to a USB flash drive, another hard drive, or even over a network to another computer.

It is my work PC and no porno sites. I do have another computer (the laptop I'm using now) that I can burn a CD if necessary.

Again, I really appreciate the help.
