I was hoping for a full blown vomit fest right in the middle of that mess. Pat shouldve drank 60+ cups of egg-nog, barfed in the middle of that horrid competition and caused a chain reaction that wouldve put the Baby Bird video to shame.

For the third consecutive year, Patrick Philbin of Moonachie will go head to head today against 16 of the fiercest competitors in his sport as ESPN beams the event live to television sets across the nation.

The "sport," if you want to call it that, is competitive eating. The event is Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which draws the world's top eaters and about 30,000 spectators to Coney Island each year.

Much of the buzz about today's contest has centered on six-time champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi of Japan, who has complained of jaw pain, and the new favorite, Joey Chestnut.

Chestnut, 23, of San Jose, Calif., ate 59½ hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes at a qualifying event in Tempe, Ariz., last month, shattering Kobayashi's record of 53½ and fueling speculation that Kobayashi's reign as competitive eating's top dog may be over.

Philbin, 43, said his ambitions for the event are modest. He made it to the final round by downing 27 dogs in 12 minutes -- a new personal best, he said -- at a qualifier at the Molly Pitcher Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike on June 22. He doesn't expect to win today, he said. He simply hopes to finish "closer to the elite than the riff-raff."

"I feel pretty good," he said. "I'm hoping to do 30. Thirty kind of puts me in an exclusive club, but that club's getting more and more crowded these days."

A self-employed courier, Philbin joined the competitive eating circuit in 2005. Fans of the "Opie & Anthony" radio show, where Philbin is part of an informal cast of oddball "characters," coaxed him into entering a qualifier for the Nathan's contest. On a whim, he agreed. And to his surprise, he won.

At the finals that year, he ate 20 hot dogs for a 12th-place finish. At last year's Nathan's contest, he ate 23 dogs and finished 10th.

Since his debut, the 1981 Clifton High School graduate has competed in several disciplines, including pizza, meatballs, hard-boiled eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches.

He was briefly suspended from the circuit last year for "conduct unbecoming an eater," following an on-air "Opie & Anthony" stunt in which he vomited on a provisional intern after an eggnog drinking contest. He was reinstated after his fans started a letter-writing campaign on his behalf.

Philbin acknowledged that he has been closely following the gossip about Kobayashi and Chestnut this week.

"[Kobayashi] was saying he could only open his mouth the width of two fingers and he hasn't been able to train," Philbin said Monday. "There's speculation of him playing possum, and that he's going to do over 60 because he's very competitive, or that it was just to make more controversy for the contest."

Philbin said he has been training by drinking a gallon of water in under 3 minutes once a day, a technique designed to expand the stomach. In addition, he said he is trying out a new tactic this year.

"I haven't eaten since Sunday's breakfast, and I don't plan to eat until I see a bunch of hot dogs in front of me," he said. "All you care about is: Food's coming and you're ready to eat."

Just got home from Coney Island. Had a great time.
Good seeing you again, Pat!

We took a walk around the amusement parks after the contest and
then went up to Flatbush Ave. and had dinner at Juniors. No trip to
Brooklyn is complete without some of their cheesecake.
Definately will be going back next year.

Hey BB, believe it or not it's still not the best cheesecake in the area. S and S cheesecake which is made in this little store front on w. 238 st. in Riverdale, the bronx, is unbelieveable. You can go right to the factory to get it or their are a bunch of delis up there that sell it for them. It is also widely used by numerous restaruants in the city including some of the finer steak houses.
