Is not confirmed by Sony, but if is true, it could be huge, $100 is a big difference....

Report: PS3 $499 on July 12

Although Sony has yet to confirm a price drop officially, GameDaily BIZ has received confirmation from the retail sector that the PS3 will be dropped to $499 next week. Sony itself recently talked about "refining" the PS3 price. Now it appears to be happening.

A PS3 price cut rumor spread like wildfire across the Internet this afternoon when several sites spotted a new advertisement from Circuit City. The ad as seen on <a href="http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/playstation-3-100-price-cut-hits-july-15-275391.php" target="_blank"">Kotaku lists the PS3 console at $499.99, $100 less than its current price.

It wasn't clear at first if this ad was a special deal specific to the electronics retailer or if it's indeed a retail-wide price cut instituted by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.

Many analysts have speculated that Sony would drop the price on the expensive console this year, and some even predicted that it could happen this summer. It's starting to look like they were right. We're sure to find out much more next week when Sony holds its press conference at E3.

SCEA when contacted for confirmation declined to comment.

With the new Sony Blu-ray player selling at less than the PS3, the sales of the PS3 took a bigger hit than they expected. A lot of people were buying them just for that. Now they need to really start focusing on gamers though if they ever expect to get anywhere near the 360 in NA.

if you have a 360 there is no point in having a PS3 right now. I have a PS3, it's cool, but I hardly touch it, the 360 has a superior game library, better online service, and is cheaper. The PS3 has Blu Ray, but I haven't even used mine for that yet. The $100 price drop won't do anything unless Sony starts putting out some games for it.

it needs to drop another 50 or 100 before I will buy it...

I do want one, especially since its doubtful that MGS4 and FF13 will be multi console but as of right now its too expensive and they still cant compete with 360's online.

If I thought playing rainbow six vegas on the ps3 online was as much fun as it is on 360 then that would count for alot

Sony Has "No Plans" For PS3 Price-Cut?

http://kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/07/sonyprezzie.jpgUh, huh? They're having a laugh! Sony President Ryoji Chubachi, chatting with reporters today about all things PS3, has denied any kind of price-cut for the console is in the pipeline, telling Reuters:

At present we have no plans [to cut the PS3's price].

This is great! Just when everyone else was ruling one out, Chubachi was saying they were planning one. Now that one seems almost certain, he rules it out (note he doesn't say "no comment", he specifically rules it out)? Leaves us with one of two options. On the left, Sony are a complete shambles at the top, and nobody's told him to keep his yap shut for another week. On the right, Chubachi is a funny guy, and he's been messing with us all along, just for shits and giggles. I'd love to think it's the latter. But I suspect the former.

Last years E3 killed the Playstation (there was no easy way to say it would cost $600 and not upset people), this year it will be about rebuilding the brand. And with the new games and franchises that will be shown, it could be the best E3 for Sony ever.

The most anticipated announcement for Sony will be showing the updated progress on Killzone and whether or not it lives up to the expectations of the trailer they showed 2 years ago.

And there's the new stuff that's kept under wraps until they unveil it at E3. It's always interesting to see what all the companies have to show off for all the systems.

Fuck PS3.

I loved my PS1 and 2 and I bought the original XBOX while I still had my PS2. I don't know why but I played the PS2 more than my XBOX at the time, just couldn't get use to the XBox.

When I saw the 360 kiosk, I nearly had a fucking heart attack. Wound up selling PS2 and XBOX and buying the 360....I'll never go back, don't care what games they have.

Most Xbox games aren't compatible with the 360. Like I said, if you don't plan on going online and just want to play some casual games there is a ton of great games(many that you can't play on 360) available for cheap. I still holding on to some of my old games just in case MS releases an update.

Actually MOST of the last generation games DO play on the 360. There are exceptions. This may help:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

The 360 just needs an update, available via xbox live to play them.

ALL GBA games play on a DS or DS Lite. All PS2 games play on a PS3 (and look even better with the update available for free on PSN that upconverts PS2 games and regular DVDs to high def). All Game Cube games play on a Wii.

This round they all did a good job at keeping their installed base happy about the conversion.

We have a PSP, Wii, 360 and PS3. They are all fun for different reasons.

If they would change spending habits like that then they could easily save up enough money for something like a PS3. I do it all of the time.

I mean really, simple things like digital cameras cost more than PS3s and people will go out and buy them but bitch about the price of a multi-use console that does more than just play games. It's not a simple piece of shit like a Nintendo NES.

New Version Of PlayStation 3 To Go On Sale In August; Sony Cuts Price On Older Model

AP - 7/8/2007 6:57 PM - Updated 7/8/2007 6:58 PM

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.

In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for $479.99.

Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the system's library of available games.

He said Sony would be releasing 100 new video games during the current fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as the hack-and-slash action title ``Heavenly Sword.''

I thought it was dumb of them to come out with a new machine that doesn't even have the capacity of the xbox elite. How much harder is it to put in a 120gb hard drive instead of a 80?

At least with the PS3 you can swap out the hd with any laptop hard drive. So, if the only difference with the new system is a bigger hard drive, you'd be better off buying the 60gb and buy a huge 350gb laptop hard drive for it.

For now, its a piece of furniture. There are no exclusive titles except for Resistance, and the developers have NO IDEA how to use all of the "Cells" so everything gets homogenised and ported to the 360 so they can actually move some units. I'll wait for the holiday season to even contemplate buying a Blu-ray player..:icon_wink...I mean PS3.

the new PS3 dropped the emotion chip. how stupid if you ask me. First the thing cant upscale games to 1080i on older tv's and knocks them down to 480i, then they drop the ps2 inside for the backcomp and raise the price? if they continue to say that you can play ps2 games on the ps3, now they are forced to release backcomp updates so every ps2 game can be played on it and spend more time and money on something that wasnt broken.

Emulation still does some 70-80% of games as opposed to 98% for EE equiped machines.

You can access your Ps3 wirelessly over the internet with the PSP and watch movies, listen to music, and all that fun stuff. Eventually you will be able to do a lot more with it. I beleive once the DVR feature is set up on the PS3 you will be able to control it cia the PSP over the web.
