Most people still think that a torpedo has to actually hit the ship to sink it when in reality the torpedo, sensing the magnetic signature of the ship, explodes several feet underneath it. Initially, the ship is lifted then it falls into a air bubble beneath it, breaking the keel and, essentially splitting it in two.

As the bubble heads say, there are two kinds of ships, submarines and targets.
