Fuck. Red light on the Xbox

Well I didn't think this would ever happen to me, but it did.

Flashing red light on the 360.

I went to the website and none of the shit it told me to do worked, of course. And I know if I call them they will just tell me to do the same shit that the website told me to do, so it looks like I could:

a) send it to Microsoft and wait 6 weeks for them to fucking repair it

b) Just get a new one, since in the event that this happens again, it would probably be more expensive to keep repairing it.

c) See if I can sell this and get an elite, that way I can use the HDMI cable instead of taking up room in the back of my TV.

But, if there is a simple way to fix this, please, someone who has had this problem before, let me know.

It's not the dreaded 3 flashing lights, mind you. It's just one. The one on the bottom right. And I get a system error message in like 800 different languages, as if some savage in the 3rd world could afford an Xbox.

I'll search around Wackbag, but I know the most popular problem is with THREE flashing lights, which might be the same issue, who knows?

It's called the red ring of DEATH. I'm on my third one (thankfully, I'm smaat and got the replacement plan) and it needs to be replaced. Good news is you can use your HDD with another unit.

I doubt you'll be waiting 6 weeks. I sent mine in about a month ago and I had it back in under 2 weeks. I give MS props cause they ask you a few simple questions after which they mail you a box and thats it.

As far as paperwork goes they never asked me for any. You just need to copy down the serial number etc from the back of the box.

It's been rumored that if you push a little they'll send you a new unit. Take that with a grain of salt but its worth a shot.

I had to send my nephew's xbox back. Took about two weeks round trip including the time for MS to send a shipping box. You're probably better off if they repair it or send a refurb unit, as opposed to a new-in-the-box unit. The repaired/refurbs are coming back with additional chip coolers which are not part of the factory manufacturing process.

E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.

Wonder if buying new av cables would help?

Do you have an Intercooler on the back of your box? I do and it gives me that one red light a lot. It has something to do with the cables but my always boots up on the second try. It's been doing it for 2-3 months. Typically if you jiggle the AV wire and make sure it's snug it comes back on.

The PS3 is a great machine, it just has no unique support right now. The 360 does, and it's enough to keep the problems with it somewhat masked.

Well I can't find the sales list for the last three months but as of April 1st they had sold 3.6 million units but 5.5 units had been shipped world wide.

Anywho, I just tried buying new AV cables, and that didn't work. Turns out it is hardware failure, probably having to do with the GPU or something. Killzone is about it and while it is a good looking game, I didn't see much else that impressed me. Looks like a basic FPS.

In the meantime I'll be playing Mass Effect, Halo 3, and GTA4(with exclusive content coming) during the holidays.

One of the good things is that they let you share your PSN games with upto 5 other people, just log into your PSN account on your friends ps3 and download one of the games you have bought. If you want, you can delete your profile on their PS3 and they can still play the game, you can do this upto 5 times (including the PS3 you bought they game on) once you have downloaded a game onto a ps3 (and used one of the 5 licences) you can download it as many time as you want.

Both systems are very nice.

Xbox 360 has better games, better online play, and more of a selection of exclusive titles than the PS3.

PS3 has better hardware potential (graphics and physics-wise), and is more reliable than the 360. Also plays HD movies without needing an add-on. The whole thing they have with the PSP is pretty nice too.

Both have their advantages over the other, and I plan on owning both.

One thing that has always annoyed me with Sony though, is the controllers. First of all they are uncomfortable, and they have no vibration even when the fans begged for vibration. The 360 controller is a much more natural feel.

In my opinion, despite the reliability, the 360 is the better machine for now. PS3 does have some damn good potential though, and it would be nice if the game developers took advantage of it.

It would be nice if the hardware designers made a system easy (easier) to develop for. My belief is that Sony should not have gone with the cell processor for the ps3. Developing for the thing is very challenging, and compiler technology isn't there yet: developers need to take advantage of 7 specialized cores and 1 general processor (I think the numbers are right, I'm doing it off memory).

Sure, the potential is great, but getting the thing working at capacity is the hard part.

I love my 360, but I love my PS3 as well. I don't play my PS3 that much only because it doesn't have a live style of online play. And COD4 and GTA4 are coming out for the 360 as well.

The difference between the two are great. And the fact that Sony held their release of the PS3 back until they finished the machine instead of releasing it prematurely has shown to be a good idea even though they took heat for holding it back and became the butt of jokes.

One of the main differences is that the 360 has a 35% failure rate and te PS3 has a .02% failure rate resulting in console replacement.

And the fact that you had to add watercooling to your 360 shows how great the design error is. You shouldn't HAVE to modify your machine.

I'm not saying that my PS3 will never break. I understand that with moving parts and servos etc. there can be problems. But the fact that the 360 wasn't designed to get rid of the heat that is generates itself is a ridiculous mistake that shouldn't have been overlooked because it's elementary. All machines have to be cooled and the fact that they didn't even take the time to make sure they could accomplish that simple task shows how little time they put into the design in order to be first on the shelf.

There are also problems with the adhesives that they used in the machine that can't withstand the heat and will result in disc scratching after components are no longer held in place.

It's not my fault that the design sucks, and I can point out those errors as often as I like because I'm tired of the 360 zombies bitching about the better system on the market. It has just come down to the thing they reference is a fucking spaceman game that isn't on the PS3 game list. People who own the PS3 really don't give a fuck about the spaceman Halo shit. Like SamAdams said though. You shouldn't have to work on a console. Part of having a console is the uniformity and reliability of design. Microsoft did a poor job this round of making a reliable system. Thermal design and optical disc design is old hat. There's no reason why the tray should destroy the disc or heat should be at critical levels for normal play.

Sony did a solid job this go-round and now it's just up to developers to do something with it. As is, Blu-ray is really starting to make a nice niche in allowing for uncompressed elements and more additions to gameplay (ie.- Hard Boil included in Stranglehold or 7.1 lossless audio).

360 fans can hang their hat on the "no games" mantra now. but it's foolish to think there never will be games.

As for sony doing a good job this time around, hardware wise, you know it. But, it's not so good when accredited game developers (imo, valve, id, and epic, etc) denounce it's ability to program on.
From that, we're going to see a lot of ps3 exclusives looking great (because they have to) and a lot of the cross platform titles, and offerings from non ps3 exclusive studios (read : Anything not konami or square) looking like ass at 30fps, needlessly.
You won't see that so much on the 360 due to ease of development. (Truth be told, it only applies to titles that are half-assed anyways. I usually grab a console for their exclusives, not their "Hey, we got this game too" shit. A lot of "Hey, it's available here too" games will be less polished on the ps3 for a long, long time to come)

Let alone for arguments sake, how far it falls from the window onto the ground once it stops being a console with dedicated solid state architecture (gc, dc, psx/2), and starts being a pc in a small form factor (as it is with the 360, ps3, wii and xb1).
Expecting it to work forever without maintenance, let alone without failure of some sort is just foolish.

Being put off at the idea of having to throw a different drive in it, or even watercool it, mod it at all, I dunno what to say there.
That's really the only way I can be fully certain of it being in working order, or reliable. Again, I'd rather trust my own handiwork, than some underpaid asian assembly lines.

If I have something I can make better, or improve on its functionality, or make it more reliable... I'm going to do that. It's no sweat off my back, or hassle if it winds up working better than it originally did. It could only suck if I break it.

My PC is pretty much right above the min spec. It is 3 years old though and will be replaced by Christmas.

As to games the PS3 has that the 360 or PC won't have. There's LittleBigPlanet. Lair is shaping up to be a really interesting game. Haze seems like a really unique FPS. there's always the next Socom and Final Fantasy game. It's a really wide swath of titles that are gearing up to be tremendous.

So far my planned purchases for my system will be Assassin's Creed (non-exclusive), Ratchet & Clank, Haze, LBP, MGS4, FFXIII, and possibly GTA4 (non-exclusive) and Lair.

If the DVD format is already showing its age, it's bad news for Microsoft. Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray has had its detractors, but if multiplatform titles are going to be bigger and better on the PS3, then Sony’s going to be able to start justifying the cost of its more expensive hardware. This will doubly be the case if it's a big franchise like Unreal Tournament from Epic. It's especially worrying given that these are still fairly early days in this console cycle. If it's a problem over the next year, what's it going to be like four or five years down the line?

This is due to the the amount of files, problems in optimizing the instruction set to run on a cell processor, as well as bandwidth issues that also trouble blu-ray movies occasionally.

I know the storage capacity of the Blu-Ray. If you read the article it says that the makers of COD may be cutting the content of the game down for the 360 version because the console is using old-school DVDs because Microsoft sucked so much dick that they didn't include HD-DVD with their consoles. Poor move on their part.

I've NEVER had a problem with my Blu-Ray films dude. They don't lag and have a problem due to the amount of info on the disc and the read time.

Also, the load times with Rainbow Six has NOTHING to do with Blu-Ray disc format. It has to do with Ubisoft/EA sucking cock and not wanting to code the fucking game properly for a different console. Check your shit :action-sm

Don't be jealous that your 360 DVDs only hold 1/6th the content that Blu-Ray discs do :action-sm

Oh and by the way. I just recently got two more people to buy PS3s instead of 360s so they could have a multi-use console and NOT have to wait a month for a refurbed unit after theirs burns out or scratches their discs. And they got $150 worth of free Blu-Rays that they can trade in for games :)

The BD drive runs at an equivilant of 5x DVD speed. Due to the high BD capacity there's tricks to load a disc faster. You can just duplicate textures to reduce seek time. Plus it's equal across more of the disc in terms of the read speed.

BDs transfer rate is a minor issue in the big scheme of things.

Yeah, nothing really to get much in a bind about, considering it's going to be a moot point in a year or two for the lesser dev teams. That shit'll be ironed out by the teams that have to pump out exclusive content mostly, and it'll trickle down. Hopefully sooner than later.

There are 7 million XBL accounts. There are 10 million Xbox 360s out there. MS can't even get everyone to sign into XBL... unless there are a lot of "second/third/fourth" consoles out there.

I got the 3 rings of death light, I called the help-line, the guy told me to unhinge the hard-drive, unplug the power cord, and unplug the coponent. When I did this, it actually worked, BUT it only workls when I do this, if I shut it off and turn it back on, I have to do this again, has anyone had this problem, and if so, is this the "real" 3 rings of death. If It is, I guess, I'll ride it until it finally dies....any thoughts?

If you want it to get fixed now, just call them and tell them that you have gone through the trouble shooting processes and it still does not work. That is what I did and got a refurbished one in about 3weeks. Why wait for the inevitable to happen?

Thanks to the 3 year warranty extension (must be due to the fine workmanship), it will be replaced again for free.
