Yeah but the one thing separates MGS from your average action stealth game is the story line. So whether you like it or not you are going to have to sit there and watch them.
I was wondering if anyone knows just out of curiosity how long is the install for this game? Since reports before said that this game takes up the whole Blue Ray disc does this mean that there is no need to install the game and you can run it off the disc?

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=187049
"From CVG today comes a pretty wild rumor about Metal Gear Solid 4: the penultimate title in the Solid Snake series will feature rather lengthy cutscenes.
How lengthy? Try 90 minutes. And that's not 90-minutes in total, that's a 90-minute cutscene.
Trouble is, it's not entirely accurate. Will MSG4 have lengthy cutscenes, like the 45-minute one in MGS2? Yes, says GamePro's own Sid Shuman, but nowhere near 90 minutes.
"I've beat the game twice, and am the author of the forthcoming [GamePro] review," Shuman said. "Ninety-minute-long cinemas in MGS4 sounds like an exaggeration. Like the other MGS games, MGS4 definitely has a cinematic quality. And yes, some of the cut-scenes in the game are elaborate and occasionally lengthy. But not a one, to my recollection, even approaches 90 minutes.
"I think it's safe to say that the '90 minutes cinemas' claim is a pretty big exaggeration," he told GamePro News.
Unknown at this time is whether or not the cutscenes, 90-minutes or otherwise, are skippable. UPDATE@1:15 EST: Cut scenes are skippable.
That said, there's one more rumor out there today that looks to have some weight to it. A purported pic of a MGS4 display case revealed that the game could come with an oft-maligned PS3 mandatory install. In this case, it appears to be about 4.6GB.
GamePro will update as we learn more."

by the power of greyskull this is bananas is it weird that if you where an eraly adopter of the PS3 and got the 20gig model you pretty much only hold 3-4 games in your unit.
I thought having a larger disc space would do away with these type of installs. Devil May Cry 4 takes like 20-25 mins just to install.

(The first 2 minutes translated in English):

MGS 1-3 has always been more cinematic than most games. Why should anyone be surprised that MGS4 is going to have lengthy cinematics, especially if this chapter is supposed to answer all the questions and tie up all the loose ends from the first 3 games? Besides, if the cutscenes look this good, I won't mind sitting back and watching them.
And if the last 2 games are any indication, you probably won't just be sitting back during the cinematics, like in MGS2 when you had to point the D-mic around to be able to hear the 3-way conversation or in MGS3 when you had to switch to 1st person at certain times to be able to retrieve the codec frequency.

There's been a lot of reviewers out there giving it 9's and 10's, but they still just don't answer any questions about the gameplay.
Yes, the controls are fluid and work well. But is this game just a shooter? All the footage I've seen is Snake killing people left and right, customizing his guns, and just going in a-blazing. One of the key things in the Metal Gear series I loved is the fact that you don't have to kill anyone. You can stun or knock out every single person. Yes you probably wanted to get rid of a boss easier by shooting at it, but the option was always there. This one seems way too focused on gun gameplay rather then stealth. Again, that's just how it seems. I'm still waiting for a reviewer to acknowledge anything other then "it's revolutionary and cinematic and looks amazing". I want to know about gameplay or even a specific part that they liked.
I'm not buying a PS3 until it comes down in price and when they finally work out that "Home" feature. I'm just a die hard Metal Gear fan and want to know exactly what happens. I could sit and watch someone play the thing, I don't even care. I just want my fix of Metal Gear somehow. I love the internet for people uploading spoilers!

It could be a shooter and a steath game. It all depends on the how the player wants to go through it. You could shoot every guard you come across or just stealth around them. I was watching someone playing the game live today and they chose to run around shooting every body and it seemed like a hassle, the game pretty much wants you to think about the moves you going to do and not just try to kill everyone.

I've taken a pretty hard line stance against getting the PS3, but my love of this series is slowly eroding my resolve, the more I see of this game.
Its still a stealth game, they have a new "threat ring" that goes around snake, and it spikes in locations that threats to him are, bigger spikes the closer they are. Check out the www.gametrailers.com review (9.3)

The most recent issue of EGM (has Splatterhouse on the cover) has a very nice writeup on MGS4. You can beat the game without killing anyone, except for bosses obviously. This is a stealth game. If you try to do it like a shooter, you're going to run out of ammo and probably get killed often.

From what I've seen, the battlefield setup is simply more friendly to combat, but you still more or less have to go stealth because you are way outnumbered and outgeared. And you're like 75 years old.

No, they seem to happen when the camera is focused on Snake, if you do nothing it just goes to the next part of the cinematic. The flashbacks are very quick images, kinda like flipping through TV channels.

I picked up my copy of MGS4 earlier today and played around a bit on Naked Snake difficulty (easy) to get a handle of the controls. I just restarted the game on Normal difficulty and to get through some of the early battles, I fired up Snake's iPod, and found a "MGS4 Intergral Podcast 01" on it, which kind of plays like a director's commentary for the game. It's only a 9 minute podcast that you can listen to while playing (pretty cool), but apparently there will be more podcasts avaliable either via future download or found as in-game items.

Don't try to kill him if he's not in your sights. Just run the fuck away. And if you get cornered by a bunch of them, a shotgun will do wonders. :)
This game definitely will deserve a 2nd and 3rd playthrough since you can play it with whatever tactics you decide you want to play it with. Right now I'm using either rifle headshots or my tranq gun to get by the guards, but on my 2nd playthrough I'm thinking I'd like to play through using more CQC and with fewer kills on my scoresheet.

Playing the previous games helps, but are not necessary. Just learn to use more stealth and evasion than brute force. If a guard sopts you, it's usually better to run and then lay on the ground (Hold X, then hit Triangle to lay motionless (play dead). Your camo will blend and the guard will walk around you and then walk away. It can get exciting when they are standing right next to you and not knowing if they will detect you or not.

To REALLY get the story I'd say "yes" you have to have played the first 3 MGS (as well as Portable Ops for the PSP). The good news is that Konami has repackaged MGS 1-3 in a discount pack. And IMO, the gameplay of the earlier MGS games still hold up today.

http://www.konami.com/Konami/ctl3810/cp20110/si3163071/cl1/metal_gear_solid_the_essential_collection
You could always just play MGS4 first for the basic story (good guy--> Solid Snake is out to eliminate the bad guy--> Liquid Ocelot) and then play the earlier games later to fill in the gaps, but you might not get the intended emotional impact nor the subtle references that MGS4 has to offer as Solid Snake's final chapter. If anything, you'll probably end up replaying MGS4 again after playing 1-3 and then say to yourself, "Oh, that's what was going on."

Have you played the online side yet? I have you on my friends list on PS3. But you have to make a tag name on konami's site or something. We should play eachother sometime.

I just finished through Act 2 and yes, I'm fucking loving this game. Up to this point this might be the best video game I've ever played and is easily the best MGS from top to bottom.
As for MGO, I'll jump online at some point but not until I'm finished with the main storyline. I really want to see how the story keeps developing and how many more questions from the first 3 games get answered.
And heads up, it's Sunday! And that means discount prices at Drebin's Shop!

Question: You passed Act 2 i'm in the midst of it. I'm with the rebels, their tractor broke down the door and we are in their compound. I have to find Naomi and there is a huge wooden door blocking my path. I called Octacon and he said I need to use that skylight get up there now. Wtf is he talking about. I've been trying to figure it out for over an hour. I assumed he meant the roof but all there is up there is a gattling gun and a missle launcher thing. How the fuck do I get past this area and get to Naomi?

I just started Act 2 and I can't get enough of this game, it's miles ahead of GTA4, and should be game of the year.
If you are on the fence about buying a PS3, MGS4 should be the difference maker, this game is just that damn good.

No shit. I think it's fair to say this is better than GTA4. GTA4 is fucing great but it hasn't had me playing it as much as I thought I would. I actually went back to COD4 two weeks back. I think the GTA franchise needs some major shakeups. Get it out of the US perhaps? In the future? Female lead? Asian lead? I dunno.
Regardless MGS4 is a major coup for the PS3. A shame so many video game players won't experiance this. This is worth buying the system for.

Yeah, I REALLY want to redo how I played through the first half of Act 2. It wasn't until halfway through that act that I "oh shit" realized how I was supposed to play it. But I'd rather just finish the game, then replay the whole game again to see how good of a Drebin score I can come up with since I'll have a better understanding of the routes.

Just finished the game today on one of the easy settings to get through it fast. I will be playing this game alot in the coming future. Next Im going to start working my way up the difficulties. Looking back at the other metal gear games, I wonder if they had this story planned out from the first solid game.

Im a huge MGS Fan....Sons of Liberty is still one of m y favorite games ever and nothing really has touched it really. And I'm insanely jealous of all you PS3 owners....My 360 is great but Metal Gear is out..... : ( It really is that good huh? FUCK ME!
Grand Theft Auto has always been a game that is highly addicting at first...like im sure all of us went back to cod 4 after about 2 weeks of playing gta's single..Doesnt mean it's bad at all...But It's just a pretty looking gta game. Metal gear is and will always be Great. I can go back and play all of them over and over again.

Totally! I'm on the second hardest setting right now. I def. will play it again on the hardest mode next time. I've done a lot of run and gunning this time and want to try to make it on the hardest mode with mostly stealth next time. As much stealth as possible.

Dude, it really is. Get a PS3 now if you love MGS that much. If you can I mean. It took a lot of saving but I managed to get enough cash to buy the system. Totally worth it. Yes it really is that fucking good. I agree with you about GTA4 and I totally went back to COD.
One question to those who have made it to act 3. What's your opinion on the European level? Where you are dressed in civilian clothes and have to trail the resistance to Big Mama. I found the first level in it to be kind of boring but it was still better then 95% of games. I just finished some of the cutscene with Big Mama. So glad I played MGS3 for the first time not too long ago. It made a lot of sense. Still wished I played MGS2. But some website explained the whole story for me so I get what's going on.
How fucking cool was that level where you are on top of Drebin's truck shooting the Geckos and mindless soldiers. Fucking sweet.
I have only had one boss battle so far. Two if your counting that platoon of invading frog men. Do the boss battles get better than Octocamo? I liked the battle but nowhere near as cool as The End battle in MGS3. Or Psycho Mantis in 1. I'd put it on par with The Fury battle in MGS3.
Oh and P.S. I might go murder my gf she is sleeping in the room where I have my Ps3 hooked up lol.

OK... For someone who has never played a MGS title, and not a huge fan of stealth gameplay, should I get this game? People seem to be giving this thing a 10. Should I drop the cash for this? Do I have to play the original games to be caught up?

I Can't say weather or not I like it. I am a hardcore Socom guy and MGS4 seems to move really slow. Also the targeting is horrid. You don't have crosshairs you just have to hope that the part of the body that you want to shoot is in the center of the 4 dots. I thought that maybe I'd like it online but nobodies mics were working. Everyone could hear me but I couldn't hear them. And I was the lucky one. Nobody else could talk or hear the other players before I got in the room. Someone posted before that nobody knows how to turn the mics on but I still couldn't figure out what was going on.

I never played an MGS game before and I am really enjoying MGS4. I am on act 3 right now. GREAT game. probably playing at bit too much like a FPS and less stealthy than some, but it is well done. The cinematics are excellent. I am not getting any (most) of the flashbacks though.

I've never played an MGS title past the first few scenes before giving up and saying 'fuck it'. This one has changed my mind. I really like it. And Bill if you want to get caught up, watch these vids:

I just started replaying through the game on Big Boss Hard difficulty and you really have to improve on your stealth play. There's more PMC's walking around in pairs watching each other's backs so you just can't take one out without alerting the other.
I also just started playing a bit of the MG Online this morning. I got absolutely murdered trying to get my bearings during my first couple of games playing Team Deathmatch. But I slowly got the hang of sneaking around and tip toeing behind people before unloading a clip into them.
If anyone else is playing, my MGO character is: Carkeys_515

Story is great so far, I really love the sniper rifle and the anesthetic pistol. I wish the Solid Eye didn't have a battery life...I can understand the little Otacon robot having limited range and battery life, but....meh

Go back to the main menu and rewatch the mission briefings. Get control of the MK II and do some exploring around the Nomad. You'll find a spare battery to extend your Soild Eye and MK II use in those briefings. And if you stick near Sunny on the Act 2 briefing you can watch her pick up and play with a PSP. :)

There's also a boombox on the table that you can turn on and change stations with. I kept scanning through the stations until I heard the one playing the original theme from the 8-bit Metal Gear and left that playing for the rest of the briefing.
