What would a band like Primus or Zappa or _______ be labled as?

Zappa & Primus I gues would be catogorized as well... I don't know now that I think of it.. Zappa was so spread out he was impossible to cat. Primus is just on the fringe of rock i guess.

Never really cared for the categories.. I'm sure someone will be able to label them.

All hard to categorize...

I really hate the term "progressive" and especially if you abbreviate it as "prog." Its so douchey, like "Emo." Isn't all music progressive in some way and emotional in almost every way?

Zappa is like rock/jazz... Almost like Hendrix was towards the end.
Primus is rock, perhaps experimental rock (boardering on prog)
Mars Volta is rock boardering on metal (i haven't really heard all their stuff though)
Captain Beefheart.... probably jazz style rock. It's not really a category but his songs are jazz numbers but with a rock base
Gnarls Barkley is neo dance soul - they have the beats underneath pure soul

All these artists are really great for going into experimental territory. My submission is Saul Williams. He is a rap guy who raps poetry over not quite metal.

MV is way too diverse to say simply rock bordering metal. There are lots of latin, punk, noise, experimental, and (yech) progressive elements to label it anything but Mars Volta.

Gotta disagree with you on the Beefheart as well. Its much more rooted in blues than jazz, but there are def some jazz influences in there.

I do like the sound of Neo Dance soul though. Thats the best description of GB i've heard. I'll def check out Saul WIlliams.

This was a pretty good idea for a thread.
I'll be looking up some of the bands I've never heard of, tv on the radio etc.


just my two cents; bands that play actual instruments primarily without the use of many electronics (synths, drum machines, sequencers, etc. I think a sequencer is the biggest factor. actually) I lump them into a rock and roll catagory. Primus and Zappa, too.

Both bands "rock".
