If you had to do anything, get good quality powered speakers, and always have a back up. With a powered mixer, if the amp blows or the mixer blows, your whole gig blows. With powered speakers, if one happens to go, you still have another, but thats why you always want to have a backup. I carry 2 backups, both different brands, just in case.
EV SX series and JBL eons are good models that are affordable and reliable. Stay away from the mackies, they are not very musical.
Good luck!

I could see the powered speakers for a portable system, just remember that you need to have power to them, as well as your mixer, so you need to run extra wires to it, or make sure you set them up near electricity.
Depending on your needs, the size of the room, etc, Anchor makes a pretty nice little set up, where you get the powered speaker with a built in wireless mic recceiver and CD player right in it. you can attach a second passive speaker to it, and its got a mic and line in so you can run more mics to it with a mixer if you need to.
We have about 10 pairs of them here at work. They're great for the occasional multi mic event, and excellent for setting up with a podium for a lecture type event. They go up on the tripods quick, come down quick, and they sound decent in pretty much any environment we've used them in

my application for use is pretty simple...either it will be used in our atrium for a 100-300 people event...a few wireless mics (4 or 5 at most, but probably not that high)...or an outdoor event on our grounds...
we plan on using 2 speakers and again 3-5 wireless mics...
here is what i was planning on buying...thoughts???

the mixer has a two-channel power amp, and selectable power output of 500 watts, 200 watts or 75 watts per channel.
i should have mentioned this equipment will be used maybe 5 or 6 times a year...(it is cheaper to buy than rent as we have been doing in the past)...
