We found these in the tree at the new house tonight. They'd already eaten the leaves off of about 2 feet of the end of a limb. We cut off this portion that had a couple of dozen or so of these caterpillar-type things on there and burned them. We didn't see any others on the tree. But we're worried that the tree is in danger. Anyone had to mess with these things before?

why did you burn them? they are neighborly caterpillars. youre supposed to cut the branch and place it in the neighbors tree. they incite conversation.

Gypsie Moth Caterpillers....BURN them. Ever see Dead trees for alot on the Highway? yup they did that. Home depot has expensive shit to fix it, but a down home remedy was a ring of Dawn Liquid around the tree But burn them out first!

Are you sure they're gypsy moth larvae?
I'm from the northeast, and the ones we had there were less 'aryan' than those.
Also, they emerged as larvae in may.
Those look the same as far as shape, but not color.

That's all I got.

Looks like something fromthe Datana classification.

http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/treeselector/detail_problem.cfm?PathogenID=100

Severity: 2 out of 5

Frequency: 3 out of 5

Symptoms: They travel and eat enmass (usually thirty to a hundred) for protection. They also raise the front and rear portions of their body in mass when a possible predator (birds & other insects) appear. The caterpillars eat holes in the leaves, leaving only the veins. As the caterpillars grow larger, they eat the entire leaf, leaving just the petiole. There is a yellow to orange band around the caterpillar body just behind the head that is easily seen on older caterpillars; that is how they got their name. Young caterpillars are reddish-brown with white stripes; older caterpillars are black with yellowish stripes. The head is black.

Cycle: These insects overwinter as pupae and the adult moths emerge in early summer. Eggs are laid on the lower side of leaves. Caterpillars are present for several weeks. Two to three generations occur per year.

Management: Because this insect feeds in groups, it is easily controlled by pruning off the branch that they are feeding on or by pulling off the caterpillars by hand. Bacterial and chemical insecticides are effective. This caterpillar is most numerous in late summer when its feeding causes little damage to the tree. In these cases, no control is necessary.

They're killer caterpillars. Pretty soon, you'll wonder where your pets went - as you go searching, you may find them swarmed over the dead carcas of what was once your four legged best friend. Eventually they'll find your scent and come into your bed at night and crawl through your nostrils and eat through your sinuses to your brain stem, sending you into convulsions and eventual vegetative state.

You should probably kill them.

I'm a cattapiller expert, and I would suggest you sell your house now and MOVE. Seems your trees are infested with what is known in the scientific world as negroius, yellowish, crawley thing, swear that's the sceintific name. Anways these little critters will eat a tree in a day or two , then they look for dessert, chicken & watermelon. Leave now before your property value plummets. Good luck.:action-sm:action-sm

They are a type of Dioryctria. In really large numbers they can damage trees, but in small infestations you can blast them off the tree with a jet of water and/or spray with something like Malathion.

OOps , never mind

not sure what the hell they are, but this stuff should work

Ortho Bug-B-Gone (http://www.ortho.com/index.cfm/event/ProductGuide.product/documentId/3c7132146a8ad2ca2c4a3f90decab385)

you can pick some up at Home Depot or Lowes. I had a similar problem a few years ago, sprayed this stuff on it and haven't seen them since.

Check with the guy working in that department to see if they have the stuff that attaches to your hose, that way you can easily treat the entire tree and any surrounding trees.

The good thing is that I think that the Ortho stuff turns the tree into poison so that you don't have to worry about the problem recurring. I could be wrong though...

Call an expert. I had these little fuckers in an apple tree of mine and the only way to get rid of them is to have a professional spray the tree. I tried the shit at Depot first only because I worked there and it didn't work. I think I paid 125.00 and the crew came and sprayed the whole tree. And if all the fuckers don't die most crews will come back for nothing and respray. The spray only lasts a couple of years but you will probably never see them again.

I think I saw one of those once in the back of some girl's throat. It was still in a cocoon. I took it to my weird friend who works at the museum and he told me it wasn't from here.

Did your tree try to help someone move a couch into a van? Is it a big tree...mabye size 14?
