Welcome to the dark side... of Bob Saget!
One of TV's most wholesome personalities, Bob Saget built an international reputation by simultaneously starring in the squeaky-clean sitcom Full House and hosting the family-friendly hit America's Funniest Home Videos. But this August, Bob Saget is starring in one of the least wholesome stand-up shows in TV history, and... That Ain't Right!
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6438/bobsagetuu7.jpg (http://www.hbo.com/events/bobsaget/index.html)
In his second HBO stand up solo, a one-hour, adults-only evening of stream-of-consciousness comedy, Saget touches on such disparate subjects as animal sex, celebrity name dropping, snuff videos, single parenthood, prison, and the sexual orientation of his former sitcom co-stars.

I'll be watching him live at the PNC Center. It's HBO, it'll run a million times.

Humble opinion - funny guy, but seems to rely too much on cursing for shock value (the whole Full House thing). Believe me, I'm a foul mouthed fiend, but it can get old when it's pointless.
Will be curious to see what he does for an act at the Philly show.

yeah i thought he was pretty funny but definitely gets sidetracked a lot, usually funny but sometimes was detrimental but overall i thought it was damn funny.

Yeah! I was in to it till they handed him a guitar and all the funny left the room.
Whats the chances of Lil Jimmy entertaining the crowd with some drumming during his special.

I thought it was funny, but almost the same routine that was at PNC last year. So much cursing I almost started a "fuck" count. Most of those sidetrack moments are quick jabs or callbacks and you need to be quick with a good memory to catch them. Overall B+ (Would have been an A, but I've seen most of it already.)

Ever since listening to comedians regularly on O&A, I've found that I'm not as patient with "comedy acts" any more....I like hearing the comedians hang and shoot out one liners...it's so much more natural. So, O&A have spoiled me.
That being said, the one comedian who can keep my attention and laughing through the whole act is Our Lil Jimmy - cannot wait to see him at the Philly show!

You're so right...cursing for the sake of cursing gets old fast.
From what I was reading over at the PNC thread, his show was basically the same as Jones Beach, so my guess is it's going to be the same in Camden. Ho hum ... I think I'll find my way to the bathroom during his set.
Watched tonight for a little bit and finally decided I'd rather watch my Giants lose to the Jets in the NFL preseason game.

I LOVE when Bob is on, or calls into, O&A. But, I would say the HBO thing was about 95% awful.
The cursing for shock value and getting sidetracked 8 times in mid-sentence definitely ruined it for me.
But, if he's drawing a paycheck from it, then God bless him.

I thought he bombed overall relying too much on full house jokes and that kid jarrod.
one of the funnier things was how he was doing a joke about an intern for Americas funniest videos and was clearly impersonating club soda kenny. He even named the intern Lenny.

He basically did the same shit at PNC tonight as in Camden last year. His guitar bit and songs are mildly amusing (your dog licked your balls, we get it), but he really needs to come up with some new shit. The thing is that a great number of people there probably heard his act for the first time, so 'whudeva'.

yea its the same act from last year's virus tour and this year's virus tour. However most comics totally change their act after an hbo special so we'll see what he comes up with in camden

Is Saget going the way of Caliendo? I have never seen his stand up but I know Caliendo was the obvious weak link in the Vegas line up. Fucking ten year one trick pony.

put it this way - Saget's sort of funny the first time because you're not expecting Danny Tanner to curse, but it becomes old real fast .... just like Caliendo's impressions which haven't changed in like, forever

1) Of course it's the same as last year's Virus Tour set. He probably taped it at that time. Did nobody else notice that our own lil' Jimmy's HBO half hour was the same set that he had been doing live at that time?
2) I do, however, agree that the shock value gets old. Saget is definitely funny. Now that he has shown himself to be a dirty comic on a national level, he has to actually bring the funny next time.
3) Pinky in Kimmy Gibbler's ass is still funny.

In his HBO special, Saget never came close to pulling off a laughable joke. He just cursed, cursed, cursed, apologized, and then cursed for 40 minutes.
Then he pulled out the guitar and I said to my wife, "Great, now he's gonna fucking bore me in acoustic."
And he did. Saget is awesome on the radio, but he needs to develop as a comedian.

He's a good friend of the show and I like his call-ins. I've never seen his act so I was getting ready for the funny last night- but I could only last about 10 minutes before I had to bail out.
He did have one of the best spots on the Aristocrats movie though.

i really didnt like the 'thats not right, dont laugh and I apologize' stuff. to me, thats begging for clapping on a joke he knows bombed. i think it was pretty damn rough and i didnt really laugh until about 10 min BEFORE he brought out the guitar. that guitar came out and i about changed the channel. Oh well, at least he still kills on the show. :)

I always thought I was the only one that thought Bob Saget's "jokes" got old real fast. Each time I read a Virus Show thread, people are always saying how Saget killed! Where are those people now? People must only think that after their first viewing. I TiVo'd the HBO special and I predict I can complete a good portion of the punchlines.
The wife and I tried to watch it and ended up playing some Wii sports just to wake up from watching it. His act got old real fast.

That's exactly what I did. He was the last act before the break and since the
shows are a major sausagefest, the mens room actually gets a big line during
the intermission. I split early and was back on the lawn before he was done.
Don't feel like I missed a thing. Hopefully, it'll be that way at Camden too.

I missed the special last night since I was at the Virus show but I DVRed and will watch it when I have time.
With that said, Saget killed last night at the show, but the act was almost identical to last years. The whole place ate it up, though, so I guess the majority didnt mind.

I agree with the majority of the posts here.
The only thing I can think is that MAYBE if you didn't know he was a filthy bastard, you might think his act was funny. but I didn't laugh once in the entire show. he goes off on so many tangents and never tells a "joke" per se.
oh well. I love him when he calls in. I guess not every comedian can do stand up.

Wow that really is a bummer...but not unexpected. I always thought he seemed really cool but came off as way over eager and trying to force everything to be over the top. I saw him interviewed on Glenn Beck last week and he just came off oddly.

Yeah he kinda admits in the act that he's cussing a lot and saying things for shock value.
That said, how much of America actually knows Bob Sadget in this context? It's totally understandable that this would be his DEBUT HBO act.
Now if he does this again... if he ever does a second one... then that would be a big issue.... I would join the "enough we get it" crowd with the full house references.
I thought it was funny, an entertaining hour.
Not everybody has poignant things to say with their humor and they really are just doing dick/fart jokes with potty mouth language. I think people have become so accustomed to comedians with something to say that they are unable to just laugh at silly random humor.
Particularly fans of this show. The boys give you such an insider's view you think you're in the know about comedy and get into using industry terms like "hack comic". That's a great credit to O&A for making it so personal/interactive but the reality is you're just fans listening to a radio show. This extra toughness on stand up comics bit is not fooling anybody.

His HBO special last night was the same word for word act I saw him do LIVE last October in Boston.
With that said....Yes it sucks that he does the same thing over and over again, but How easy is it to be a standup Comedien? Do you think that a Standup can change his act everytime they get on stage? They take what jokes are funny and rework them into there act. Some comediens Like Norton or Bobby Kelly change there shit all the time, but still hold on to older jokes. Saggot just Holds on to what jokes he has which arent that bad if you've never seen him before.
Colin Quin Always has New shit and ive seen him twice in one night do 2 different hours of comedy which he killed each hour. Thats just fuckin TALENT and not many can do that. Saggot is no Quin or Jimmy, but funny non the less. Next year if he talks about him and kimmy gibbler though I will charge the stage with my dick out so dont get me wrong. theres nothing worse that using the same shit over and over again for more than 2 years.

oh and to the guy that said something about jimmy telling the same jokes from his ONS. Saget's act is WORD FOR WORD. Jimmy rotates the ridiculous amount of material he has. Ive seen jimmy and bob about 5 times in the past 2 years each. Bob's act is the same from beginninng to end word for word. I've heard Norton's face mushed into the sofa joke 4 times but u know what? he switches it up enough that its still funny

Another Philly homegrown that will be a victim 2 the "BOOOOOOOOOO!"

I honestly didn't find it that funny. And I know why: the entire basis of the show was that it's Danny Tanner from Full House, saying Fuck.
So I agree with everyone here that said, since we already know the real Bob Saget, there was no shock value. Which someone pointed out that Bob opens the show by saying, "This is all about shock value". So cursing and trashing Full House wasn't enough, IMO.
That being said, Bob has been great on the radio and is very funny.
One thing I noticed: I don't recall Bob saying, Cunt, even once. Maybe it's not part of his lexicon or maybe I've been listening to Louis CK too much.

I have to agree with some of you.

I thought it was ok, but not amazing. It got funnier as the show went on. The beginning was a little weak because he had too much of an ADD thing going on and he laughed at his own jokes more than they deserved. I laughed more once he slowed the pace down a bit.

I agree with everyone's critiques on the HBO show. To cut him some slack though, he hadn't done standup in almost 20 years before the Virus tours correct?
I'm sure once he bleeds every line of that Full House material dry (he's right about there now), it'll take him a little while more to get back in the swing of things standup wise (writing new material, perfecting the deliveries, etc...)
