A third of my laptop screen is strips of color and black. the gf stepped on it yesterday. other then the screen being funky it's working fine. i have warranty on my comp and it's still covered by it. the screen itself isn't cracked. how much should i be freaking out?

You're screwed. Same thing happened to an old laptop of mine a while back, and the stripes were just the beginning. Eventually the whole screen will blank out.

IMMEDIATELY back-up your hard drive to an external hard drive. That means today.:icon_eek: You don't know what they will do with it.

Do you have a way to output the laptop screen to a CRT, LCD flatpanel or TV? If so, do that asap.

Make sure you put some good kiddie prn on the computer before sending it in, it seems the laptop repair companies like that and will get you and your laptop together quicker.

Computers come with a hard drive which stores every program and document. An external hard drive uses the laptop's USB ports to transfer data to itself for storage which can be transfered to other computers.
