The rumored format change at CBS Radio's WYSP/Philadelphia looks to be a reality in the making as the station cut essential staffers and air personalities today. Surviving the cut is afternoon drive personality Kidd Chris who was on air today discussing the staff cuts, relaying that most of the air staff including Barsky, Matt & Huggy, and Scotty & Alex were let go. Also let go were Kidd Chris producer Brad Maybe and show staffer Monkeyboy.

The move comes one day ahead of Opie & Anthony's arrival for on location broadcasts Thursday and Friday in advance of their Virus Tour hitting Camden, NJ this Saturday night (9/15).

A return to a rock music format is expected, though not confirmed at this time.

The Rock Is Back is the new slogan for WYSP (94.1), which at 5 p.m. Thursday is expected to announce that it will dump its guy-oriented talk format in favor of a mix of rock and talk.Gone will be the Barsky Show, Scotty & Alex, and Matt & Huggy, plus late-night fare including Loveline and John & Jeff. Paul Barsky himself is expected to remain under contract at the station, as will Vinnie the Crumb, who does work on the CBS station's Eagles broadcasts. Barsky sidekick Kim Douglas was let go.
Opie & Anthony, the New York-based syndicated morning talk show, will remain, as will Kidd Chris, on afternoons. (Chris' producer, Brad Maybe, and sidekick Monkeyboy, were let go.)
Opie & Anthony are in Philadelphia for live shows Thursday and Friday, leading up to their concert appearance Saturday at the Tweeter Center.
WYSP, once a dominant force in Philadelphia, has seen a steep ratings decline since morning host Howard Stern left for satellite radio in December 2005. In the July Arbitron ratings, WYSP was ranked ninth among its bread-and-butter audience of men ages 18 to 34. It had toyed with a number of images recently, including Free FM and 94 YSP Talks.
The station seemed committed to a talk format as recently as June, when it let go longtime programmer Gil Edwards. Station sources said Edwards had lobbied for a return to rock but was rebuffed by management.

If I want to listen to music, I can flip to the new modern rock station. There are numerous reasons why WMMR is not on my presets, one being the music they play is God awful. Now, there is no reason to listen to WYSP other than O&A and Kidd Chris.

If they make Chris play songs in and out of breaks, that will be a horrible decision too. Firing all his producers is insane. How the hell do you put together a show now? Since the "big" announcement at 5:00, the've played a bunch of songs in a row. Looks like Kidd Chris isn't coming back tonight. I've long since turned my radio off. Brutal. Simply brutal.

Barsky's show and Matt & Huggy weren't great, but it was original programming that had some decent moments. More importantly, it kept my work day moving along. Now, it's going to be music. How many times can you listen to the same CDs? Or flip to a radio station replaying the same songs every couple of hours. I'm going to be sitting in my cubicle, seething with rage, trying not to jam pencils into my co-worker's eyeballs. More than usual.

If they went to music, they should have flipped to modern rock, and months ago. Now, with 104.5 flipping formats a few months ago, that station has the modern rock audience all to themselves. And WYSP is simply trying to erode WMMR's audience. Why not try a mix of album oriented and cutting edge modern rock to get a toehold on both audiences.

The decision makers are making one blunder after another. Other than O&A and Kidd Chris, the station is dead to me. I'll be going to the modern rock station any other time.

Here is my 2 cents on this:

YSP has been a struggling station for quite some time. I really don't understand how Preston & Steve get their numbers. When I lived in Philly, I listened ONLY to YSP. It was great to be able to here O&A again, and Kidd Chris was okay, better than nothing in the afternoon.

I totally agree with Ron & Fez getting afternoon drive at KROCK, and then syndicate them to Philly and elsewhere. Numbers would take a while in Philly, but, they would get there.

The syndication of KC did fail miserably, and the callers from Pittsburgh were horrible! (no offense to any Pburg people here).

I hope they find some success, but, I don't think going back to rock is going to help YSP. :(

Most of the laughing on this show is Chris and his crew laughing at themselves. His show is a trainwreck and not funny. Chris is so friggin ADD that he can't keep a straight line in a segment for more than 5 minutes. It's tangent after tangent after tangent until you are so far lost that you are begging for a commercial break. YSP should have dumped his ass as well so he can go to Sirius now with Hoo Hoo instead of when his contract is up in August.

However, this is bad news for the boys in Philadelphia. WYSP had built up a rabid, but still too small audience but still growing listership for a station that cultivated the all-day listener. And many people listened from 6AM to 7PM and beyond. Now, that is all over, and WYSP is going after the casual listener, the people who flip stations all day long. And O&A is a show that has a rabid animal fan base, not casual listeners. So while the station's ratings plummet as all the current listeners abandon ship and are general in a furious mood, some of O&A listeners will disappear too, many out of spite. I will only be listening for 3 hours a day. No more.

Less talk out of Kidd Chris = less gooder.

you will find on this board that alot of people here listen to alot of different radio shows because we dont want to be the people that dont like a show because of something we heard from someone else....we definitely do our research here...i have heard Kidd Chris alot and i enjoy his wrestling talk but theres some other things on the show i dont enjoy...if O&As replay wasnt on xm i would probably listen to it...when O&A were doing there stuff on preston and steve i went back and listened to them for a while which was fucking torture

Dont knock it till you try it EL OH EL.....the thing about this board is that its pretty well known and whenever something happens with Howie or some other radio show they have to run over here and give us shit and they dont go away till you give them critical facts

I've said I listened to him. I flip channels driving home from work and hear a lot of different shows on the radio. I've never once gone out of my way to listen to him and never once put him on inside my house or anywhere else besides my car.

I don't like him, I don't like his "King of Philly" attitude and I don't like that he is a Stern kissass who goes out of his way to mention Howard and his appearances on Stern's show. I think one time they were talking about how great Howard TV is...I wonder what favor/payment Stern gave Chris for that plug.

That is odd. I've been on the damn channel, and I've still never seen Howard TV. Cable companies in West New Jersey don't carry shit.
