Excerpt:
The audience member was preliminarily identified by UF officials as Andrew Meyer, a UF student in the College of Journalism and Communications.
Toward the conclusion of Kerry's UF forum, Meyer approached an open microphone at the University Auditorium and demanded Kerry answer his questions. The student claimed that University Police Department officers had already threatened to arrest him, and then proceeded to question Kerry about why he didn't contest the 2004 presidential election and why there had been no moves to impeach President Bush.
A minute or so into what became a combative diatribe, Meyer's microphone was turned off and officers began trying to physically remove him from the auditorium. Meyer flailed his arms, yelling as police tried to restrain him.
He was then pushed to the ground by six officers, at which point Meyer yelled, "What have I done? What I have I done? Get away from me. Get off of me! What did I do? ... Help me! Help."
Police threatened to user a Taser on Meyer if he did not "comply," but he continued to resist being handcuffed. He was then Tased, which prompted him to scream and writhe in pain on the floor of the auditorium.
The video is on the page. You have to wait a little bit, but soon enough you'll hear one of the wussiest taser screams ever.

The guy's obviously a bit of a dramatic wackjob, but those officers better pray he doesn't have the where-with-all to bring about a lawsuit. He would have a very good case against them. Though out of turn, his 'diatribe' in no way validates the amount of force they brought down on him.

Absolutely not. HE may be an annoying douchebag but he shouldn't have even been arrested, much less fuckign tasered while SIX OFFICERS were holding him to the ground.
Way too much force for something that shouldn't have even had any force in the first place.
They could have just escorted the kid outside and told him to calm down.
I hope he does sue the department for that shit. They deserve it. If they didn't want people asking questions then they shouldn't have had a FUCKING OPEN MICROPHONE for questions. He was well within his right to get on the mic. It would have been another story if he jumped on stage and took over the mic, but he didn't.

there is a response later in the article about the Cpt's view
After the incident, Capt. Jeff Holcomb of the UPD said Meyer had been charged with disrupting a public event and placed in the Alachua County Jail. Holcomb said there would be an investigation into whether the officers used force appropriately, adding that employing a Taser gun would only be justified in a case where there was a threat of physical harm to officers.

I guess none of you have ever had a run in with the police. That kid got what was coming. You do not resist arrest and flail your arms and push back, they will throw you down and cuff you every time. I thought black people were the only ones who don't understand this. If you feel you are being wronged, you can fight it/sue later, in the meantime you should just shut your mouth and cooperate.
The kid is a little bitch anyway.

The police were not arresting him. They were escorting him from the microphone. He then began panicking, pushing them, yelling, etc. which is when more police surrounded him. Then he escalated it more so they started to have to use force. I'm 100% on the police's side on this. They didn't arrest him because he was speaking out of turn, they arrested him because he attacked anyone who tried to escort him from the microphone.

why were they 'escorting him' from the microphone?
Because each person was supposed to ask 1 question and he was up there for almost 2 minutes firing off questions. After being asked to take a seat he stayed up there and continued to hog the microphone.
Everybody was supposed to be able to ask a question, why is it fair for him to not leave the microphone after asking his question? Why should he be allowed to attack anyone trying to free up the microphone? It isn't his microphone, it isn't his property. It's the universities microphone and the universities property and the university asked for him to step away from the microphone so other students could ask their questions.

He was acting like a douche. NOTHING would have happened if he would have complied with the original officer and just stepped away from the microphone. Instead he struggled and tried to make some fucking point because students ALWAYS have SOMETHING to say about EVERYTHING and want to CHANGE THE WORLD MAAAAAN.
This is what happens when you struggle. The cops were doing their job. It's damage control. They shouldn't have tased him, right, but it would have been a good thing to just take the kid out of the room and tell him to shut the hell up.

Alright, so there's been a lot of talk about this today. Everyone says the cops went a little too far, and maybe they did, but here's my take on the whole thing.
This guy is just like 90% of college students: a dramatic, whiny, smug douchebag who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, and he's got a point to prove. The question was obviously driven by a "shame on you" anti-Bush agenda.
I've read a lot of opinions from various message boards, and they are all the same. "He had every right to speak his mind. The cops went too far."
Those officers were there to act as security. When one douchebag started to raise his voice and began preaching rather than asking the question he was up there to ask, the officers tried to tell him to sit down. He ignored the officers, kept preaching, and struggled when an officer grabbed him. When you struggle against an officer, you are going to pay the consequences.
As he continued struggling, the officers used more force. Eventually they had to taze him. If this kid would have just asked his question, shut the hell up, and sat down, there would have been no problem. But of course he can't do that, because he doesn't answer to authority maaaaann.
So of course every student in the nation is watching this video and looking at this kid like he's a fucking martyr. Yeah, because yelling, "don't taze me bro," and, "Ow, ow ow," really dignifies a person. Go fuck yourselves.
Why is it that cops are always shit on for doing their job? The kid struggled, so they used more force to control him. That's what they are trained to do. You cannot get unruly during this type of event or you will be considered a threat, you fucking moron. And if this kid was black? Forget about it. Al Sharpton would be all over the news for weeks comparing it to Rodney King.
If I had to pick one thing about college that I hate, it's the students. Everyone that goes to college turns into a smug liberal douche. Everyone's smarter than everyone else, and everyone wants to change the world maaaaaan. The truth is, you're all nobodies. Preach your values and impose your agendas on people all you like, asshole; nothing can change the fact that you are just an insignificant little parasite on a rock hurling through the cosmos. Next time you think you are important--the next time you even imagine what it would be like to BE important--look up at the sky. Yeah. Don't feel so powerful now, do you asshole?

It should have taken no more then 3 seconds to have that guy in an escort position at the microphone, and walked out by 1 Cop. Thats is ridiculous and embarasing to have that guy still yelling when you have 6 Cops trying to effect an arrest.

Even more reason they should have the proper training. They mostly deal with drunk and unrully kids. They should be proficient in Non Deadly Compliance training, there was no reason for that. Putting the kid aside, if he had to go fine, but the taser comes into play due to the lack of traing of the department.

Reading a few of the other stories and I'm having less sympathy for this little cunt.
Evidently he barged right up to the front of the line bypassing other students who were waiting their turn so he could get his loud mouth running over some borderline conspiracy theory that Kerry somehow conceded his election under mysterious circumstances. I'm sure he wanted to be internet hero to all his online buddies and his fellow students for stickin' it to THE MAN.
Again, I would have loved to see him blackjacked into unconciousness but those student cops were just fucking awful at their job. These institutions and corporations want the appearance of having a private police force yet they don't want to pay more than $10-$12 and hour for them. They simply give them minimal training, hand them some cheap polyester uniforms and send them on their way. Like MJMandalay said, one decent professional cop could've taken care of that with almost no major issues.

Hello Exactly!!! :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
FYI, for whoever said it - they're not "rent-a-cops" making $10 an hour. UF police are a real police force and have the same powers and training as your local town police. It's actually a decent sized force - about 100 sworn officers. They should have known better.
Let me put on my expert hat here for a second and actually use my degree in Criminal Justice (magna cum laude!) and law school education.
Yes, there is a law for disobeying the police. But to violate the law you have to disobey a LAWFUL order of a police officer. In other words, if the police are telling you something that is out of their power or unlawful or violates your rights, you do not need to obey. In practice, is it better to obey and sue them later? Yes. But that guy did nothing wrong.
OK, next problem - These police need to go back to the academy and re-learn the theory of the "Use of Force Continuum". The UoFC is the proper police practice to apply in any situation where force may be needed.
What it says is that when a person you are trying to take into custody (always the goal in these situations - get them safely into custody and then sort everything out) uses or threatens to use a particular level of force, police are supposed to respond with an equivalent level of force and not exceed that.
If a perp is shoving, shove back or whatever to get them in custody. If a person is using a nonlethal weapon or threatens a serious assault, use a nonlethal weapon. If a person uses or threatens to use a gun, use a gun.
These Barney Fifes, obviously so excited to "get" this guy, skipped right to tasing him when he had not escalated his force beyond a simple struggle to get free, which by the way he was losing.
- You cannot taze someone to get their cuffs on.
- You cannot taze someone to make them stop yelling.
And most significantly,
- You cannot taze someone when you have them on the ground and outnumber them 4 or 5 to 1 and can be reasonably sure they are unarmed because of the security involved in having a Senator at a small speaking event.
It is irrelevant how many times they warned him. If I warn you 300 times that I am going to shoot you, it is still illegal when I do it. Until he escalated his force beyond a simple struggle to avoid custody, their force should not have exceeded the equivalent struggle to get him into custody.
I hope they wind up like Mike Nifong (Duke bang case DA).

http://www.sptimes.com/2007/09/19/State/Tasering_of_UF_studen.shtml
GAINESVILLE -- Citing a regrettable crackdown on free speech, the University of Florida put two police officers on paid leave and requested a state investigation into the use of a Taser on a student during a Monday speech by U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
On Tuesday, more than 100 protesters sat cross-legged on the floor of the campus building where UF president Bernie Machen told reporters he regretted the incident because it interfered with the university's core mission of the open exchange of ideas.
"The black eye is that ... discourse didn't occur," Machen said. "I'm embarrassed by it."
The controversy began when Andrew Meyer, 21, asked Kerry about a book that argues the senator won the 2004 presidential election. Speech organizers said time was up, and Meyer's microphone was turned off. Two police officers struggled with him to the back of the auditorium, where other officers joined and forced him to the ground, Tasered and handcuffed him.
Meyer was arrested on charges including resisting arrest with violence, a felony, and interfering with an educational event, a misdemeanor. He spent a night in jail before his release Tuesday morning on his own recognizance. He had no comment when he left.
UF has placed the sergeant who ordered the use of the Taser and the officer who shot it on paid leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate whether force was properly applied, and its report will be forwarded to a panel of professors and students who will recommend any changes to UF's policy. The State Attorney's Office will decide whether to formally charge Meyer.
The arrest escalated into a national spectacle with the help of technology and a campus climate charged with worry over the Virginia Tech shootings. Hundreds of thousands of people viewed YouTube videos showing his question and shouts of "Don't Tase me, bro" and "I didn't do anything" as officers subdue him.
"In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way," Kerry said in a statement Tuesday.
Machen, who has been flooded with calls and e-mails about the arrest, said UF must ensure the safety of students and their right to free speech.
Machen said Tasers are an accepted law enforcement tool on most campuses. UF spokesman Steve Orlando said police started using them in 2001, and 17 students, including Meyer, have been Tasered. But none created such a controversy as this.
UF has not suspended Meyer, and Machen said he is welcome to return to classes. "The sooner the better," Machen said.
Meyer, a telecommunications junior from Weston, has a Web site that features a self-described "disorganized diatribe" criticizing media coverage of the Iraq war. The book he held at Monday's event was Armed Madhouse by Greg Palast, which reports on voting irregularities in the 2004 presidential contest and calls Kerry the victor.
He's also known for posting practical jokes and comedy routines online.
Meyer was a columnist for the Independent Florida Alligator, the student newspaper, for at least a semester more than a year ago, but was not given regular space more recently.
Josh Goldman, a UF senior who met Meyer two years ago, said his friend is interested in presidential candidate Ron Paul and 9/11 Truth, a movement that questions the mainstream explanation of Sept. 11.
Meyer was noticeably absent Tuesday. Friends had not seen or heard from him, and he did not attend the protest or a news conference held by his attorney, Robert Griscti, who said Meyer was resting and wouldn't be made available to reporters.
Before asking his question Monday, Meyer handed a videocamera to Clarissa Jessup, a Santa Fe Community College student who didn't know Meyer, and asked her to record his question. Jessup followed him and wedged herself between police officers to capture his screams after being hit with the Taser. She uploaded it to YouTube that day.
"I couldn't believe the injustice that was happening to him," Jessup said.

First of all you little twirp, I've had my head banged off a cop car's hood more than once, have you? It has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with this kid being a fucking idiot.

Explain to me how he went against "The norm". He was at a Q&A, he asked a few questions, hell he may have even went overboard (How often do you get to ask someone like Kerry questions in person?). Kerry wasn't offended, Kerry wasn't even alarmed. The kid asked the "Secret society question" some administrator made a hand gesture and the cops moved in and grabbed the guy. If he was asked to leave, had caused such a disturbance, why did he have enough time to go 3 minutes? Not only that, Kerry didn't even bat an eye and answered the kids question.
The cops over blew the situation, escalated it for no reason by putting their hands on the guy and failed to contain it. Sorry if I am going "against the grain", I actually still believe in my rights.. I know a lot of you throw yours aside because of the terrrrrrrists!

But that's not the issue here. The issue is he had to buck the system mmaaaann and when you do that there are penalties. He wasn't speaking his mind. Its amazing you'll get up in arms about your favorite radio show being kicked off the air. You would even have the fore site to join PAC and take to the streets but you see no problem with the kid being tazed. Five of Florida's finest and they couldn't even handcuff a kid without "Non" lethal force.
I guess you can only pick the battles that the cool kids bring up. You would all be singing a different tune if the Ant went after the cop(s)..

When you ask a question, you do so expecting an answer. Do you really think this jackass had any intention of ever shutting his trap and listening to Kerry respond?
Of course not. He didn't want answers, he wanted attention, and he got it... 50,000 volts worth.

for one, he stood up in the isle, and just babbled, one question after another. and kept going. theres was a completely disingenuous and disrespectful tone to the manner in which he did it. he wasnt interested in an actual debate, he was interested in causing a scene and disrupting.
you dont see a problem with this, because thats type of looking for attention behavior you rely on.
