I watch the news all the time. I listen to CNN, and Fox in the background at work, and only heard a few things about this case. I was trying to figure out how if passed me by, and I must of just blocked it out, for whatever reason I thought this was like a few weeks old? Which I guess would make sense, since the kids on trial tonight? I did hear that something had happened and that the kid was being unjustly accused, though. I think attemped murder is something that most people don't realize is not a hard sentence to get, especially when there are six people involved, and there were weapons, which I don't know if there were weapons involved.

i was there today and it sure was interesting. as you enter Jena, two white girls hold up cardboard signs saying "Jena is Not Racist". One girl noted (and i did too) was th media was feuling the race war. Instead of dealing with the story of 6 boys attacking one boy, it was more geared onto black vs. white

The place was shut up pretty tight. it was interesting to note that there were white people outside their houses watching the marches.

one report said the white guy had a gun, but the boys disarmed and STILL beat him.

we talked to the guy who planted the "white tree" (white auto teacher) and he said that at an assembly, one black guy jokingly asked the vice principle "could i sit under the white tree" the VP said they could sit anywhere

apparently the white boys who hung the nooses did serve something called "alternative learning". this went to Baton Rouge and was shown that although offensive, they were in their rights.

they took down the tree, which was dumb. The tree wasnt racist, it was the dopes who put the nooses up.

Later arson was commited. it was unknown who the accomplice was, or if it was related at all

then the 6 on 1 happened.

Besides deke, does the fact that one had priors mean anything in this? As was stated before, it's tasteless to hang a noose in a tree as a taunt, but it's not illegal. They were suspended for their tastelessness. The principal recommended expulsion, but it was overturned by the super intendant. Probably not a good call, and might have quelled a lot of things if they were expelled.

The gun was brought to school AFTER the incident, it was found in his truck. So I don't know where you're 'facts' in the case are coming from.

6 on 1 is quite far from a little school tiff as you seem to feel the fight was. Coupling that with the fact that they knocked him unconscious after the first hit and then proceeded to hit him and kick him for a bit as he just laid there doesn't really fit the description of your typical school fight. I don't remember seeing those types of fights when I was in school. Did he deserve an ass kicking by somebody, fuck yes, but that doesn't mean you can just throw the law out in this one. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

These protesters are, from the ones I've seen interviewed, calling for all charges to be dropped. What the fuck is that about? The kids should be charged with assault because that's what they did. Regardless of everything, this whole case has turned into a big fucking joke. Given the whole situation and all events, the white kids got their punishment, the black kids got the shaft with attempted murder, should have gotten charged with aggravated assault (the original charge), case closed. Ive never claimed that they shouldn't go without punishment. BUT throwing around 20 year sentences like its nothing is ridiculous. In terms of jail time.. these kids could have:

Took multiple automobiles
Embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars as the CEO of a company.
Rob a bank
Front a dog fighting ring

I was trying to figure out how if passed me by, and I must of just blocked it out, for whatever reason I thought this was like a few weeks old? Much of that is disputed. What happened next is not: Two months later, an arsonist torched a wing of Jena High School. (The case remains unsolved.)

Two fights between blacks and whites roiled the town that weekend, culminating in a school-yard brawl on Dec. 4 that led the district attorney to charge the Jena Six with attempted murder. The lethal weapon he cited to justify the charge: the boys' sneakers.

In July, the first to be tried, Mychal Bell, was convicted after two hours of deliberations by an all-white jury on reduced charges of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit it.

(It was widely reported that Bell, now 17, was an honor student with no prior criminal record. Although he had a high grade-point average, he was, in fact, on probation for at least two counts of battery and a count of criminal damage to property. In any event, his conviction was overturned because an appeals court ruled he should not have been tried as an adult.)

There is, however, a more nuanced rendition of events - one that can be found in court testimony, in interviews with teachers, officials and students at Jena High, and in public statements from a U.S. attorney who reviewed the case for possible federal intervention.

In July, the first to be tried, Mychal Bell, was convicted after two hours of deliberations by an all-white jury on reduced charges of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit it.

(It was widely reported that Bell, now 17, was an honor student with no prior criminal record. Although he had a high grade-point average, he was, in fact, on probation for at least two counts of battery and a count of criminal damage to property. In any event, his conviction was overturned because an appeals court ruled he should not have been tried as an adult.)

There is, however, a more nuanced rendition of events - one that can be found in court testimony, in interviews with teachers, officials and students at Jena High, and in public statements from a U.S. attorney who reviewed the case for possible federal intervention.

Consider:

-The so-called "white tree" at Jena High, often reported to be the domain of only white students, was nothing of the sort, according to teachers and school administrators; students of all races, they say, congregated under it at one time or another.

-Two nooses - not three - were found dangling from the tree. Beyond being offensive to blacks, the nooses were cut down because black and white students "were playing with them, pulling on them, jump-swinging from them, and putting their heads through them," according to a black teacher who witnessed the scene.

-There was no connection between the September noose incident and December attack, according to Donald Washington, an attorney for the U.S. Justice Department in western Louisiana, who investigated claims that these events might be race-related hate crimes.

-The three youths accused of hanging the nooses were not suspended for just three days - they were isolated at an alternative school for about a month, and then given an in-school suspension for two weeks.

-The six-member jury that convicted Bell was, indeed, all white. However, only one in 10 people in LaSalle Parish is African American, and though black residents were selected randomly by computer and summoned for jury selection, none showed up.

Yes, but since the algorithm for the computer program was developed by a white C++ programmer, racist logic was coded into the program, therefore making this conclusion null and void (and racist).

I'm glad this article was posted, as I always believe it is better to make decisions and judgements based on facts rather than hysteria and prejudicial views.

But I had to laugh at that part of the article. What exactly did they expect school administrators and teachers to say? "Oh, that's the White Tree where only White kids are allowed to hang out. Yeah, we have known about that tree for years..." Of course they are going to say their school is open to every race.

Now ask the students what the tree represented and I'll bet each race would tell you that was the tree where only the White kids were allowed to hang out. And I’m not just blaming the Whites, I'm sure Blacks had their area too where if some White kid tried to hang out he would get his ass beat into the ground.

The conservative and liberal media is a joke, but some things they actually got right. This town was fucked-up long before this incident hit the national media.
