France Races to Oust Illegal Immigrants
September 22, 2007 4:03 AM EDT

PARIS - A Russian boy suffers head injuries after falling from a window while trying to elude police. A North African man slips from a window ledge and fractures his leg while fleeing officers. A Chinese woman lies in a coma after plunging from a window during a police check.

As France races to deport 25,000 illegal immigrants by the end of the year - a quota set by President Nicolas Sarkozy - tensions are mounting and the crackdown is taking a toll.

Critics say the hunt threatens values in a nation that prides itself on being a cradle of human rights and a land of asylum. Protesters have gathered by the dozens in Paris to protect illegal aliens as police move in.

But with three months left in the year, police have caught at least 11,800 immigrants, less than half the target, so Sarkozy has ordered officials to pick up the pace.

"I want numbers," Sarkozy reportedly told Brice Hortefeux, head of the Ministry of Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Co-Development, which Sarkozy set up after taking office in May. "This is a campaign commitment. The French expect (action) on this."

There are no solid estimates of the number of illegal aliens in France. The Immigration Ministry puts it at 200,000 to 400,000, many from former colonies in Africa. France has a population of some 63 million.

The president, who cultivated a tough-on-crime image while serving as Interior Minister, says France needs a new kind of immigrant - one who is "selected, not endured."

His government is fast-tracking tighter immigration legislation. Parliament's lower house on Thursday approved a bill that would allow consular officers to request DNA samples from immigrants trying to join relatives in France. Even some Cabinet ministers dislike the measure, which critics say betrays France's humanitarian values.

The DNA tests would be voluntary and proponents say such testing, which would get a trial run until 2010, would speed visa processing and give immigrants a way to bolster their applications.

Immigration legislation under consideration also aims to ensure that immigrants joining family members here speak French and grasp French values - to be proven with tests.

Sarkozy has gone on to suggest immigration quotas by regions of the world and by occupation.

"I want us to be able to establish each year, after a debate in parliament, a quota with a ceiling for the number of foreigners we accept on our territory," he said.

European countries to the south, like Italy or Spain, face a greater challenge from illegal immigration than France - but neither have set themselves targets for throwing aliens out.

In the Netherlands, the first act of the new parliament elected in November 2006 was to halt deportations set in motion by the previous government.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's new government declared an amnesty for up to 30,000 people. New asylum seekers and illegal immigrants still face a tough regime, kept in camps while their cases are handled. Even legal immigrants must pass language tests before coming and take citizenship classes in order to remain.

Meanwhile, resistance to France's crackdown has built among human rights groups, politicians of the opposition left, and even police. Injuries of foreigners during the past two months have also mobilized critics.

The 12-year-old Russian boy, who was fleeing with his illegal alien father in the northern town of Amiens, has been hospitalized with serious head injuries since early August. The North African man in the southern town of Roussillon suffered double fractures to his leg. The Chinese woman fell from an apartment in Paris on Thursday when police investigating a theft complaint turned up to carry out a check.

"Neighborhood groups are forming," said Pierre Willem of the UNSA police union. "Reactions are becoming more and more violent."

Some police officers worry they will get caught in the numbers hunt - accused of racism for making arrests on the basis of skin color or other illegal criteria.

Even unions representing Air France employees are protesting, saying the flagship carrier's image is suffering because the government uses it to return illegal aliens, sometimes bound hand and foot, on flights occasionally marked by violent incidents.

"It's not our mission to be police auxiliaries," said Leon Cremieux, a national secretary of Sud Aerien, a small union representing employees of the aviation industry. Conditions during some expulsions are "contrary to human rights."

Socialist lawmaker Michele Delaunay, of Bordeaux, recently became a symbolic sponsor of a Kurd of Turkish nationality who had been ordered to leave France, stalling the expulsion process.

"It's a way to show the public that these problems of expulsion are, above all, human problems and not numbers," Delaunay said, adding that the young man speaks French, worked and paid taxes, making his case "particularly legitimate."

They'd better, else they will be a predominantly Muslim nation. All census reports indicate that European Muslims are multiplying at a 5X rate of inherent Europeans.

I love this Sarkozy guy.

holy shit! Sarkozy rocks the fat ass!

what i don't understand is why he is being portrayed in such a bad light? he is making sure the laws of his country are enforced. this doesn't make him a human rights violator or an evil man.

they have a much easier time of it there because they have less illegals than we do. something like this could never work here but i like his idea of quotas, anyone and everyone just can't be allowed in, it makes no sense.

go Sarkozy, the netherlands stink

very true....... but they did elect him. Europe in general is becoming much better at dealing with immigrants than we are. It's the only thing I like about them.

the problem is this country is already more "tolerant" (aka faggy) when it comes to immigration.

thats true, and it makes me sad. our society as a whole is so hen pecked that we can't do anything. i'm sick of worrying about whether or not enforcing our laws is going to offend someone. i'm just disgusted

It's probably easier to get rid of the illegals in France. They don't get jobs over there. They live off the welfare state, so business lobbyists aren't pressuring the French government to go easy on the illegals. In the US we've got an unholy allience of business interests, brown supremacists, and leftists who pressure the government to leave illegals alone.

Fuck, at least SOME nation will get serious about kicking the fucking illegals out of the country instead of trying to adopt the language of the illegals and changing the school systems and social services because of them.

America is just fucking pathetic when it comes to a lot of things these days. I'm sad to say that it looks like France actually may now have the balls that America used to have.

Im not sure about that. their immigration woes, especially regarding muslim immigrants, are much more dangerous than any mistakes we have made. they might be cleaning up more aggressively now, but they are starting from a much deeper and seriously dangerous spot than we are.

imagine if all the hotel cleaning and vegetable picking hispanics in this country were muslims who openly talked about starting an islamic theocracy here.

their stance on middle eastern issues, as well as their uppity attitude regarding the US and its social woes has really bitten them in the ass now that they realize how dangerous this whole issue can be

It's just the liberal agenda to paint any "Patriot" as a racist.

It's certainly the European liberal agenda to paint anyone who doesn't embrace multiculturalism as a racist.

Except, multiculturalism as a philosophy, is exactly what has led France to this point. Who didn't see this thing coming? You can't have numerous riots caused by immigrants, every YEAR, and shit not just reach a breaking point.

Sarkozy's harder stance on immigration is one of the things that helped him win the election - so I don't know, perhaps his political opponents and the French media might be criticizing him for this move, but I have to feel a significant portion of the French public, whether they choose to be vocal about this issue or not, are approving his stricter measures (openly or silently).

Britain's heading the same way with THEIR immigration policies. It seems that Europe is slowly awakening to the immigrant threat (i.e. the new Moors invasion), the question is just if they're already too late.

Very true.

Some multicultural types make the case that Mexicans are predominantly Christians and thus would assimilate better than their Islamic European counterparts. Unfortunately, the words coming out of the mouths of the last few Mexican presidents says that they're planning something similar as far as a takeover.

These fuckers openly give speeches about how Mexicans in the US need to remember where they came from and that their allegiances must be kept to Mexico. This is known as sedition and I don't give a fuck if they're not US citizens, it's detrimental to the US and would've put you in front of a firing squad back in the good old days. The sad thing is our politicians know about this (hell, they probably were at the speeches) and yet they refuse to acknowledge it. All they see is cheap labor and more voters.

While I like to think that, I didn't see the article mention anything about rounding up illegal Muslims. I know, that's a religion, but how may of the following do you think are Muslim? I'm curious & want to see who's being deported to which country.

I remember reading an article online a while back that was talking about a lot of the countries in europe and how in the not too distant future the native people to those countries (france, germany, italy, etc) would actually end up being the minority. these immigrants are reproducing at a much higher rate than the native people and it will eventually take them over.

i think this is also one of the reasons the US has to take a strong stance against illegals. i think the incentives for illegals to come here needs to be taken away, including birthright citizenship. i support a simplification to become legal so it is easier for legal immigrants, but we cannot allow our country to follow this path.

That just emphasizes to me that they're making at least an effort to enforce the immigration policies across the board.

But, statistically, the majority of France's (and Europe's) immigrants are Muslims. With France, it's largely from North Africa.
