So last year I drove Across the country for vacation but in each place we stopped we tried to eat either the famous local food or from a famous local place. Being from Jersey we knew there were things we could only get here but here are the foods from Jersey as well as some of the ones we hit along the way. What are some foods from Jersey I don't know about or ones from where you are from?
Jersey:
"Grease truck sandwiches" - Rutgers based trucks that make sandwiches that have chicken fingers, fries, cheese steaks, mozzarella sticks and red sauce on them. You can basically get whatever you want on them all mixed together.
White castle: Know they are in like ten states but people not from Jersey don't tend to know them
Jersey dogs: Fries and a cut up hot dog inside a hollowed roll
Philadelphia:
"Pat's King of Steaks" Obviously just the best cheese steak anywhere.
Philly pretzels
Maryland:
soft crab cake sandwich
Memphis: Rendezvous Ribs. Best dry rub ribs ever
Florida: Aripas corn cakes with Mexican white cheese inside
Cuban sandwich
New Orleans: Alligator Po boy's
California:
Pyzanos pizza - insanely weird pizzas
In and out burger
Oregon:
voodoo donuts - all kinds of donuts include jay Mohr nyquill donut
Wisconsin: Fried cheese curds
Omaha: Steaks
Kansas City: BBQ
Chicago:
Giordanos stuffed deep dish pizza
chicago hot dog
Cleveland:That pasta chili and cheese dish
Pittsburgh: Primanti brothers and The O
Primanti is sandwiches with fries Cole slaw and thick bread
The O is just massive hot dogs
Also just outside of Pittsburgh is the beer barrel pub which makes worlds largest burger
Massachusetts: Clam Chowder
New York:
totonnos pizza
dirty water dog
Egg cream
katz deli

Pork Chop Sandwich or WOP CHOP I don't know what hellspawn created these damn things...They are hugely popular out here dunno why...a breaded and deep fried porkchop, pickles, onions, cheese, and yellow mustard on a bun. I found it puke inducing

North Carolina = barbecue (NO dipshit, not what you think cooking on a grill is)
Eastern NC style...chopped shoulder or Boston butt with a vinegar and red pepper sauce
Western NC style...chopped with a more tomato based vinegar sauce
that mountain, South Carolina shit with a yellow mustard sauce is just retarded
Ohio = a tenderloin...it's a deep fried, chopped beef, pounded flat, about the size of a Little League catchers mitt on a bun
Florida Keys = conch fritters, at least they were more localized to just there when I was there in the 80s

Not by a long shot. That, along with Geno's is a tourist spot. Between the two, go for Geno's.

Rutt's Hutt in Clifton, NJ has the best hot dogs I've ever had in my life. I always grab about 15 dogs before every Giants game and head on over to the tailgate and they're gone in 10 minutes.
Nelly's in West Long Branch got me thorugh many a-night at college. It's a knock off of the Greasetrucks but it's an outstanding knock off. Fat Willie or Fat Nights for me. There was always an unwritten rule that you had to order Nelly's past midnight. It's just that kind of food. The Windmill (hot dogs) was another staple in college but I never thought it was that great.
Drake's cakes rule here in the Northeast. Yankee Doodles and Coffee Cakes rock the fat ass.
Also Boylan's. They have some bitchin' Black Cherry, Birch Beer, and Cream Soda. Not sure if it's just a tri-state area thing or if it's other places too.
Been to Primante's in Pitt but wasn't a fan of the sandwich. Looked good though.
I'm going to San Francisco in February. Any food joints/local dishes I should check out? Please hold the gay jokes.
Also going to Montreal in March. Any help there would be cool.
You guys should check out this show on the Food Network. It's called "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." This guy goes all through the country checking out the local fare. Great show and it makes me want to go around the country checking these places out all the time.
Also, with jersey. Although it's in other states, pork roll.

I didnt use the quote feature.
San francisco is considered one of the best fine dining cities. It has great cHinatown and little italy. Try anything having to do with fish because of how fresh everything is. What they are most famous for is the cofee house, sourdough bread, and cheese shops.
Montreal: First of all poutine. Its french fries with cheese curds and gravy is my memory serves me. Its like there national dish.
Second Bagels. Montreal has their own style of bagels.
Tim Horton's donuts. If poutine is the national dish then this is a close second.
Finally if you eat high class food, more specifically pork and foie gras. Anthony bourdain recommends Au Pied du Cochon restaraunt.
Also for New Jersey I thought up two New Jersey musts. Hot Dog Johnny's has probably the best hot dogs and circh beer anywhere. You can eat a dozen dogs and still be hungry.
The other one is Pete an Elda's in Neptune City. Paper thin pizza you order by the pie. Finish it and get a free shirt.
In central jersey, middletown to be exact check out Pasquales Pizza 3. I work there and the Buffalo Wing Pizza and BAcon Cheeseburger are amazing. The different types of pizza slection is unmatched.

They also serve these types of sandwiches in Celeveland, in the Flats. If I remember they call the place Paninins'. Whenever I went to the Flats, I would end a night of drinking, with one made with Pastrami.
If you're ever in Sandusky, Ohio. Try the Steakburger at the Old Dutch Tavern. On Thursday's night you can get one with up to 5 of a variety of toppings for $2.00.

My suggestion for Chicago is skip the hot dog and try one of their other local specialties: the Italian Beef Sandwich. Had one at Portillos in Chicago and it beat the hot dog, hands down. Soooo damn good.

In Pittsburgh, the sandwich is a Permanti... see Permanti bros website. In Cleveland it's the Pannini. Excellent sandwiches (get pastrami, coleslaw, fries, and a fried egg). The Panninis are grilled as well. Anywhere between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, get wings at Quaker Steak and Lube. Parma Periogies, Parma, OH. Awesome perogies. Old Dutch Tavern is Sandusky is great. Angry Bull in Huron awesome dry aged Angus steaks. Somebody mentioned on page 1 cinncinnati chilli. It's not from Cleveland, it's not chilli, christ-on-a-pony it has cinnamon in it, it's an abomination. Gross. The resturants The Harp and Lola are also a favorite in Cleveland.
Chicago - Lou Malnatis deep dish
Richmond- roasted oysters, guinness, and soft-shell blue crab, and boiled peanuts
Minneapolis- real vietnamese food, the local stuff minnesota food is bland and awful, a little bar out here called Hoppers in Waconia, MN - great burgers
any roadside place in the south - grits, ham steak w/redeye gravy, biscuits, cracklins

Don't even THINK about trashing this until you've tried it-- it's nummy:
Cream of Peanut Soup
King's Arms Tavern
Colonial Williamsburg
Williamsburg, Virginia
Serves 10-12
¼ cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 celery ribs, finely chopped
3 tablespoons flour
8 cups Chicken Stock* (or low-salt canned chicken stock)
2 cups smooth peanut butter
1 ¾ cups light cream or half-and-half
Finely chopped salted peanuts, for garnish
In a large saucepan or soup pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and celery and cook, stirring often, until softened, three-five minutes.
Stir in flour and cook two minutes longer.
Pour in the chicken stock, increase the heat to high, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until slightly reduced and thickened, about 15 minutes. Pour into a sieve set over a large bowl and strain, pushing hard on the solids to extract as much flavor as possible. Return the liquid to the sauce pan or pot.
Whisk the peanut butter and the cream into the liquid. Warm over low heat, whisking often, for about five minutes. Do not boil.
Serve warm, garnished with the chopped peanuts.

Hey just noticed this. Explain it.
Fieed trinkies, fried coke and fried oreos are all created by the same guy at a county fair in the couth and they spread from there. The oreos and the twinkies are covered in a sweet batter and flash deep fried.
Fried coke consists of balls of batter mixed with Coca-Cola syrup, which are fried and then topped with more Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, and a cherry.
I've had the oreos, amazingly good. Never had the other two.

Chicken fried steak is pretty much a staple around here.
Take a piece of stringy beef, pound the shit out of it, batter and deep fry it. Top with gravy. I always take a piece and dip it in the mashed taters before shoveling it in my mouth. In college, the served it a the dining hall and we would call it "chicken fried what's inside?"
This pic is for breakfast.

just moved to FL, but one thing I already miss are the Portuguese restaraunts in the Fall River, Mass area. Chorico and chips (fries) sanwiches from Billy's cafe, pork and little necks from O'Gils. All the portuguese restaraunts have great steak plates. And, it was alredy mentioned, but Mass/RI is known for the coffee milk too. Great stuff. Another good place in RI is Spikes hot dogs, there was a scene from Dumb and Dumber filmed there, the opening scene I think, great dogs there.

In Rochester, NY- a lot of restaurants have the Garbage Plate which can vary, but the most popular is fries and macaroni salad topped with either hot dogs or burgers (no rolls) and all topped with texas hot sauce (basically chili). RIDICULOUS when your out drinking. The original is at Nick Tahou's, but you may get shot or stabbed there.
I gotta say, I've lived in Western New York my entire life and I have never heard of a Garbage Plate. It looks like someone's dinner and they were too lazy to seperate it. I guess depending on what combonations it could be good.
Since no one else will, I'll represent Buffalo in this thread and submit the Beef on Weck. It's rare roast beef and horseradish on a Kummelweck roll. The Kummelweck is similiar to the Kaiser roll, but topped with pretzel salt and caraway seeds. I have to admit I never had a Beef on Weck, but that is because I don't like roast beef or horseradish.

Northeast PA....gotta be Old Forge style Pizza....call it square, sicilian, whatever...I haven't had good pizza since I moved away from home. Fucking awesome stuff.
As for Philly, Jim's or Tony Luke's...forget that touristy stuff, though they're not horrible. Geno's is better than Pat's, but not by much.
Profera's Pizza.... I lived for that shit on Fridays at School....

I was going to post about the Garbage Plate. I think the best plate is at Mark's Texas Hot's on Monroe Ave. A little safer then Nick's, other then the off night where some guy trys to shoot the bouncer with a shotgun and gets some innocent kid. Good plate tho

Got a few that are missed for NJ:
Burgers:
Without a doubt White Mana in Hackensack, these motherfucking little precious morsels shit on white castle, hands down the greatest little burgers dare i say the world.
Take out Chink food:
Lotus Café in Hackensack, on River Rd-fucking amazing
Hotdogs:
Rutts is great but Hiram's is forgotten in Fort Ree (Fort Lee), deep fried hotdogs but bigger- fan fuckingtastic
Some Rhode Island foods:
Best dogs up there are either New York System or Spikes Hot Dogs- Spikes has amazing rolls and they put all kinds of crazy shit on their hotdogs.
Sandwich:
J's deli- if your in RI you must go here, best fucking sandwiches around, they make all kinds of fucked up shit, and the number one thing with a sandwich is bread, and their bread is killer.

I have another one.
The Pubwich... Gino's Pizza anywhere in WV but the one in South Charleston is my favorite. Fresh baked bread piled HIGH with sliced Lean Ham, 100% Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and our special dressing. Then baked to a warm goodness.

Not that anyone would ever come to Buffalo, but...
Wings - Don't bother going to the Anchor Bar, it's hack. For the hottest, tastiest wings go to Duff's. Mr. Bill's has jumbo wings with a great flavor that isn't too spicy.
Pizza - LaNova is the best pizza I've ever had. They even have a suburban location now so you don't have to risk getting shot.
Subs - Bozanna's - Ridiculously huge subs. I blame this restaurant for WNY being one of the most Obese cities in America
Jim's Steak Out - Great 3 in the morning subs. Also has suburban locations now for the same great food without the risk of being mugged or puked on.
Grover's - Gigantic, greasy burgers. Also has pretty good wings, but not great.

My suggestion for Chicago is skip the hot dog and try one of their other local specialties: the Italian Beef Sandwich. Had one at Portillos in Chicago and it beat the hot dog, hands down. Soooo damn good.
The deep dish at Malnati's in Chicago is pretty darn good
Italian Beefs - Johnnys, Q's, Manginos or Mr. Beef are all good. Got to go with cheese and mild peppers
Deep Dish Pizza - D'Aggostino's - love their tomatoes and sauce, Pequods - they carmelize cheese on the crust, it is fantastic
Deadbent mentioned it, and Ricobene's breaded steak sammich with red sauce, cheese and sweet peppers is the shit. You feel bad about yourself after you eat it, but it is great at the time. Really messy too, I remember my buddies and I having them in the parking lot before a White Sox game, good times.
