yeah it got pretty beat up with reviews when it debuted at some film festival last year. its been about a year since then and i think it went through major reshoots and cuts. it looks weird as shit but donnie darko was too. i'd see it.

Southland Tales is going North for Oscar!

And "some" film festival was Cannes.

I can't make my mind up about this one. I think I will give it a shot on Netflix.

From what I read, it's a deep and dense movie. Not mindless entertainment, you have to think this one through.

He's actually not that bad of an actor.

I hated Donnie Darko but from the trailer I might download this.

i saw it last weekend. it's probably the weirdest film i've ever seen. I still don't get everything that happened in it, but it took me about 3 times to understand donnie darko.

just got done watching it and I enjoyed it. It was bizarre but interesting. How are the books? I saw that there are about 3 or 4 of them on amazon. Does this movie just cover one of them or did it cover several?

blackout-

i ordered the comic on amazon - the story goes that as the director was finishing up the screenplay and filming he realized there was a huge backstory to the movie that we never see - and the movie is split up into 3 'chapters' -

so he renamed those 4, 5 and 6, then got a deal and released 3 comics ~100pages each titled 1, 2, and 3 that serve as the prequel - haven't gotten them yet but i imagine they'll deal with things like

roland kidnapping boxer and subsequent scenes in the desert, the setup with the baron hiring krysta now and the relationship between krysta, boxer and their screenplay. also backstory with the neo marxists characters and maybe a bit more on abilene and the war stuff with roland...

also on amazon ' Southland Tales: The Prequel Saga' - collects all 3 of the comic books - which came out individually last year in regular installments.

Is this movie limited release or something? I haven't even heard of it till now.

The movie was made at least 2 years ago at this point. It's just never been released more than on like 2 screens.

EDIT: Just checked Netflix, and it looks like it's coming out on DVD in a week and a half.

Kevin Smith had something to do with this movie, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is, and I'm too lazy to look it up. To sum up: I like toast.

donnie darko is one of my fav movies ever, this movie however is a huge fucking mess. pass on it completely. even if you read the pre-story comics.

Finally caught up with this last night.

Let me say if you are a movie person, you must see this. If you are just a regular see a movie here and there person, pass this up, you will probably turn it off after 15 minutes. I also feel a lot of it's critics just don't get it. Do they really think a movie with the line “I'm a pimp, and pimp's don't commit suicide” is really trying to make a grand statement about politics or anything else for that matter?

Also, if you are expecting Donnie Darko, don't. It is nothing like it . It's more of an experience than a cohesive movie, I gave up trying to figure it out about ¾ through (imagine all the plot of “Lost” crammed into a 2 and a half hour movie), and just let it be and had a blast watching. Maybe after repeat viewings it will make more sense, but trying in one sitting will likely make your head explode. Yes it's a mess, but damned if I forget it anytime soon.

I've read that the pre-movie graphic novels shed some light on the backstory and characters, so I'm definitely checking them out as well.

i dunno... everything is explained -- no loose ends, esp. if you read the prequel graphic novels. may seem like a mess to some people but there is an explanation for everything

It was, actually. Kelly said that he is making a point about society and how the movie is a satire on society and whatnot. It wasn't just some ridiculous mindfuck.

I know he was satirizing politics but some critics out there felt he was trying to be serious in doing so. If that is the case, then he failed miserably. If he just made a crazy, fun movie that poked fun at society and the crazy lefties and righties that have overrun politics, then he succeeded.

Heres a snippet of a bad review I read:

"Southland is ridiculous in much the same way the Austin Powers movies are, but it's played straight."

See, I don't think it was. That's what I am saying. I believe it was purposely funny. Like I said, if that wasn't the director's intention, then for me it goes from a good movie to a so-bad-its-good movie.

I definitely need to pick up the graphic novels, but half way through I looked at the faq on imdb and that helped with getting the movie tons. Definitely made it much more enjoyable.
Though I'd have stuck it out without having done that anyway.

I believe it was purposely funny. Like I said, if that wasn't the director's intention, then for me it goes from a good movie to a so-bad-its-good movie. When half your cast is from SNL, and you have characters with names like Vonnegut's, you're clearly not trying to make a serious movie. I thought it as zany over the top satirical. Maybe it wasn't pointed or "smart" enough to make it a truly rich, brilliant satire but to call it overly serious is ridiculous.
