I read this story and found it unbelievable. Now they're screwing with SANTA CLAUS????

Does Santa need to go on a diet? Eyewitness News
(New York - WABC, November 19, 2007) - Santa Claus, good 'ol St. Nick, is now the target of a new campaign.

It aims at the dirty little truth about Santa Claus, a truth few people talk about. But everyone knows. It's his weight.

Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson has the story on the push to get Santa on a diet.

We're being serious.

He's the unmistakable symbol of Christmas, a man children all over the world associate with all things good.

But when it comes to Santa Claus, some say there's also a bit of bad.

Kemberly: "Would you rather had a fat Santa of a skinny santa?"
Kids: "Fat!"

Five-year-old kids we talked to had no doubt. They want a pleasantly plump St. Nick.

But there's a quiet push to slim Santa down. Critics maintain that having a large Kris Kringle sends the wrong message to kids about healthy eating at a time when childhood obesity is on the rise.

"I kind of think it would be be similar to taking the sugar plum fairy dance out of 'The Nutcracker,' it's just something that is suppose to be," said Dr. Andrea Vazzana, of the NYU Child Study Center. Dr. Vazzana has mixed feelings about tightening Santa's belt.

"There are so many children on diabetic medicine because of obesity, who are being socially stigmatized and bullied because of obesity," she said. "This is a real problem for health as well as mental health reasons."

But just because Santa is a little fuller around the middle, will that really influence what kids eat and how much of it?

"I think the true culprit is probably far closer to home than the North Pole," Dr. Vazzana said.

She says when it comes to kids eating habits, parents have the most influence, not Santa. She says it is vital to make healthy choices at home, coupled with physical activity.

Even at this young age, these kids realize you are what you eat.

Kemberly: "What kind of food do you think Santa is eating to get so plump?"
Kids: "McDonalds!"

They say they'd rather have a piece of fruit from Santa then a candy cane, but this time, no one gave back their sweet treats.

Santa Claus is one of the good guys. He brings joy to kids everywhere and has been around for hundreds of years. Being fat hasn't affected his longevity.
Besides, who idolizes Santa?

I just read the article again and unless I missed it no one is pushing for a skinny Santa. The person interviewed just said parents need to monitor what their kids eat.

This dumb-ass reporter has no sources and is just saying this opinion is from coming from "critics". In other words, she is simply pulling this story out of her ass.

Fun Fact: Santa traditionally was pictured as a skinny man. It was not until Clement Clarke Moore's Poem that he became fat...One European tradition even had him with a black slave named Peter who, if you were bad would kidnap you and make you work in a coal mine

You know, let's slim Santa down. Apparently *that's* the reason kids are fat. If we slim Santa down we cure childhood obesity.

By the way, is it just the Christian kids that are fat, or is it Jews, athiests, agnostics, Muslims, etc that stuff their faces?

Hudson,

The answer to your question is Coca Cola. They also gave him what we know as the traditional red/white suit to match their colors.

Slimmer Santas in vogue, but critics say fat conscious should lighten up

Who says nobody likes a skinny Santa?

With more and more people health and weight conscious, some retailers and brands are slimming down St. Nick.

A British mall is putting its 12 Santas through a month-long boot camp that includes the "Santa sack lift." In a recent ad spot for Special K cereal, Santa was seen shopping for a bikini.

Even the Santa working the Manhattan Mall food court said he recently cut back on heart-clogging trans fats.

"I think it's a good idea because I don't want to give kids the idea that they should grow up to be fat and jolly," said the Bridgewater, N.J.-based Claus (aka Frank), who at 5-feet-6 and 186 pounds is a relatively svelte Santa.

But other merrymakers said critics should lighten up.

Melanie Cortese, 32, brought her 2-year-old daughter to Macy's yesterday from Linden, N.J., to see the store's traditionally tubby Santa.

"They're angry because they're fat? I think that's a little ridiculous," Cortese said. "That's what Santa looks like."

Santa wasn't always rotund. His classic image as a fat man is credited to a 1931 ad campaign by Coca-Cola, which wanted to convey prosperity at a time when Americans were lacking.

Spokesmen for the soft-drink giant, which has been criticized for promoting obesity, did not respond to questions about whether the company would restrict Santa to its line of zero-calorie beverages.

But he's unlikely to unpack those extra pounds anytime soon, marketing experts predicted.

"Santa is an iconic image for the holiday," said Russell Winer, deputy dean of New York University's Stern School of Business. "The culture in this case will overwhelm the health concern."

At the Queens Center Mall, where an extra-large Santa sits within snacking distance of Häagen-Dazs, parents dismissed concerns over his excess.

"It's more comfortable for the kids to sit on his lap and lay back on his belly," said Rubin Castro, 24, who brought his 3-year-old daughter and her friend from Astoria to share their wish lists with Santa.

Macy's would never put Santa on a diet, said store spokesman Orlando Veras. He's been portly ever since he made his first appearance there in 1862.

"I don't think he's really concerned about his weight," Veras said. "That's really up to Mrs. Claus and Santa himself."
