I need to buy a new digital camera today because my old one is really shitty and I'm going to the anime convention this weekend at the Javits center and will definitely be wanting to take a ton of photos.

Can anyone recommend a good one that is perhaps good in low lighting situations? Obviously I'm willing to spend like 200-400. I don't really want a really bulky one but it doesn't have to be super ultra slim or anything.

check Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=SubCatDeals&SubCategory=12&StoreType=2&N=2070070012) if you want a small one the olympus digi cams are small enough to fit into your shirt pocket. the canon ones take better pics but you can get a good quality shot from an olympus if you tweek the settings.

I bought this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8266164&type=product&id=1170290185654) right before I went to Ireland. I absolutely love it. The battery lasted for days however I was told that after a while it won't hold it's charge as well. The pics came out great and my friend who is into photography borrowed it (her batteries ran out). She also absolutely loved it.

I got a 2 GB (?) memory card which will hold over 1,000 pics.

I have a Sony Cybershot - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSCW80-Digital-Optical/dp/B000M4MLRO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197040235&sr=8-6 - and it's great. Sometimes it puts a yellow effect on indoor shots using flash, but the ISO setting does the trick. It was 250 when I bought it, now it's 200. It's an awesome camera.

Do any of you take little video clips with your cameras too?

Oh.. and do any of you know of a website that's basically like a database of cameras that actually has example jpgs from the cameras they list. I know I've been to it before but I can't remember the name for the life of me.

The examples I've been checking out on pbase of HT's camera look really good, so I think I'm leaning towards that one.

I'd stick with the Canon. Sony's proprietary memory stick is a deal killer.

I have a Kodak Easyshare V603 6.1 Megapixel Digital Camera got it last year and I love it...Takes great pics, and great videos...I bought a 2gb memory card and can take like 1200 pics or like 2 hours of video...

I did test the video feature on my camera but didn't get to dl it, so I'm no help. The camera is easy as hell to operate and has a ton of cool features.

OK so I ended up buying the Canon PowerShot Elph like HT has. I looked at a shitload of examples on the web and that, coupled with HT's comments about his use of the camera, made me buy it. There's a Best Buy across the street from where I work, so I got it during lunch.

Holy shit this camera is so freakin small!! And it definitely feels really solid when I hold it. I haven't taken any of my own photos yet because I'm charging the battery. It does seem really simple to operate. I can't stand cameras that have like 5000 different functions. I'm not a hardcore photographer and I'm not pretending to be.

Yeah I got a 2 GB one. They had a 4 GB one too, but I thought that would probably be overkill.

no worries. You're not the first to refer to me with masculine pronouns, nor will you be the last.

I did the same. I also have a second battery on my Christmas list. It'll be nice to have, but not something I need right away.

I really want to test it out like right now. The battery has been charging for like 1/2 hour. I'm going to put it in the camera and just take a couple of test shots.

Another thing that rocks about this camera -- the charger doesn't have a wire. You just pop the battery into the adapter and plug it in. One less thing because I've got wires all over the place and have chargers for a ton of shit.

Although I hate how Sony sticks it to you with the proprietary memory stick, they without doubt have the best point and shoots available. The reason is the Carl Zeiss lens. After you cross the 7 megapixel threshold, it stops making that big of a difference. At that point, the more important thing is what kind of glass you're using. Sony is the only company to contract an aftermarket company for lenses. Zeiss is a great brand, and from experience, I can tell you they capture great images. Go with Sony. It's all in the lens.

My a700 will run a Compact flash card and a memory stick.

really like my cannon sd630. small, huge screen, fast, 6mp (enough) and all the features you need in a pointer.

I have a yaschica (sp) slr that I may bring out one of these days... not because it takes great pictures, just cause it's old and complicated to use...

I went with Sony because of the HDMI output and I had 2 Minolta lenses that fits the Sony.

I have a Kodak that I use for work. I take about 10,000 photos per year. It works ok for the job.

I had a Nikon Coolpix 4600. It's only 4mp but the color and sharpness of outdoor photos are great. The only problem is that it takes about 15 seconds between shots.

The guy at the camera store told me that it can be due to batteries or sd card.

He sold me this and said I could bring it back if I didn't like it. I will post some photos soon. Never had an Olympus, but we'll see.

I highly recommend a canon digital elf. Never any problems. Make sure you get the one that does 16 x 9 Widescreen photos. That's how my minds eye sees the world and it fits wallpaper for my 16x9 plasma and computer screen. Get a 1-2 gig card you should have more than enough. Very accurate and alot of diffrent functions and pretty user friendly. This is great for traveling. It shoots really well under low light levels so well that I disabled the flash function, and it looks great. I also enabled the sports shooting function. Which makes you shoot 10 photos per sec. Then I just shoot alot and delete whats crap.

Okay, now I'm looking for a new camera. And with everything taken into consideration, I need to pick between: Sony Cybershot DSCW90 or Cannon SD1000

Which one should I get?

I'm leaning toward Sony for it's menu system and image stability (but I've read it's not very effective).

On the other hand, a lot of people dig Cannon.

The Sony is going to have a MUCH better lens. Other than that, I think they are pretty much equal.

I've had this Canon Digital Elph for nearly a week and I am really digging it. The battery life is really impressive and the shots are great. I just need to learn some more about the settings (i.e., ISO and the different shooting modes).

Im going on vacation next week and I wanted to get one of those little digital video cameras that Ant was talking about.
Right now Im on the Best But site looking at the point and shoot ones they have and I see this Apitek one for about 189.00.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8211758&productCategoryId=abcat0403006&type=product&id=1166235552515

I know nothing of these things and was wondering is this was worth getting. I have a Casio Elxim 7.2mp camera that is fine right now and I can take video with but sometimes the sound isnt great.
Would it be worth getting the other one or just keep and use the thing I got.

BUMP

Looking for a new digital camera in the $200 and under range. Originally, I wanted the Nikon D40 SLR but, I think it's too much camera for me....plus, no video. I know, get a digi video cam...I have one but, never use it. Short clips on a camera work better for me.

Anyway...

I once was a Sony fan but, after my TV and camera started crapping out after a few years, I think I'm done with Sony. I'm looking at the Nikon "cool pix" line and Canon "PowerShot"...any advice?
