I need to get a new SUV pretty soon, and now I've expanded my options with the Nissan Xterra. Has anyone had any experience with it? I have yet to take it for a test drive.

My neighbor bought a first generation Xterra, and really likes it. She did say it's not as good in the snow as she hoped for. It's a little light in the back and too top heavy as far as SUV's go.

I have a 1996 chevy blazer and LOVE it. It can handle the snow well and a little off roading. Button shift to 4WD. The new trail blazers are really nice, but expensive as hell. My friend has a 2001 exterra and he said he likes it, but it is slow as hell and like some one else had said, not to great in the snow.

My uncle has an Xterra and can't say enough good things about it. I believe it is a year and a half or 2 years old now.
Jeep Grand Cherokee = Piece of Crap
That along with the Hummer H2, BMW X5 and the Kia SUV were rated the 4 most unreliable SUVs by Comsumer Reports. The transmission on the Jeep is well known for going between 40 and 60,000.
As much as I love VWs (I own 2), wait for the second model year or at least until the end of the year when they have already had a couple of recalls. If all goes well I plan on replacing my Jetta VR6 with a Touareg next year if it really is as nice as it looks.
As for the Fords, I like the Explorer, but the Expedition is a monstrousity.

Volkswagen has a Passat wagon with I believe it's called 4-motion, that with a larger engine should do you just fine. It will have a lower center of gravity than a SUV, so it will handle better.

The XTerra handles well. I test drove my friend's. I didn't buy it though because it was out of my budget at the time with all the features I wanted.
My b/f drives and Explorer. I've driven it a couple of times, it's more powerful than my car. King of the Road, lol. No but it handles well and is way comfortable.
I personally drive a Honda CR-V. My next car I"m definitely going bigger but this serves its purposes and I like it. It handles smoothly like a car.
Don't get a Jeep they're crap. Mazda Tribute is nice. My sister has one, I"ve driven it a couple of times, handles well has great features.
If you're the outdoorsy type and you go biking and stuff, then get the XTerra with the internal bike rack. That's why my friend got his.

Anyway, I just read some excellent reviews of the Xterra. I'll probably take it for a test drive tomorrow.
Thanks everyone for all of your input. :)

Had explorer,,, engine drive train as with all new SUV's 80,000 miles new trans,,,,,(solid statement)I had an explorer new trans things still running with 300,000 + miles on it,,, but the ford fell apart, buttons, switches etc....I recently bought a 91 nissan pathfinder with 275,000 miles on it replaced trans too. This truck looks as good as the day it was sold, every single nob, button, latch works like brand new.
Im union and take flack for my Nissan. but! its the best truck you could buy,,,,,, 275,000 miles do not lie.
hate to say it but:rolleyes: NISSAN, kicks ass in quality.,,, not happy bout it but true statement.
only ford plus would be engineerion overall design the jap cars rot. .Toyota, nissan, have flawed engineering with water . Its not the metal it is engineering.but i care more about the explorers handles nobs etc falling apart, I recall my mother buying a 22, 000 dollar Cadilac in 1976 for 20,000 cash,,, ok, cadilac,, that car was a piece of shit.... read the mags. If America wants to be cheap.. F em. Its not a proud argument.

Gotta agree with Butternuts. The Japs build a good vehicle.
Both of my cars are Oldsmobiles, but they are older. I just
love a big noisey V-8! My wife however, has a 98 Sentra
with 90,000 miles on it and i've never had a major repair yet.
I'm in the business and will say, imports hold up longer with
less problems, unless you go exotic.

I have a Pathfinder (1998) and I love this thing. I drove all winter with out a problem, back and forth to MA no less. Int he two years I have had it I put 100,000 on it and all that I have had to do is get new tires and front brakes. Good car. I love it.

Screw the xtera go with the NIssian Pathfinder. By far my favorite suv, and has been for a long time. I'm pretty sure it's in the pricerange of the jeep grand cherokee which is a great car also. I whish I could afford a pathfinder i'd get it today.
damm lots of people love the pathfinder:)
