Opinion please on game system Winter 2007

I was over a friend's place and I was finally introduced to the addictiveness of Guitar Hero. He had it on his PS2. I have the Xbox1 and for some reason you can't get GH 3 on it. I want to get a new console but can't decide if I should get a 360 or a PS3. I am hoping to hear opinions on the consoles (no, I am not interested in a wii, thank you) other than the old reviews that I found online.

From what I've seen they both offer amazing graphics and gameplay. 360 has been out longer so has many, many more games, although the PS3 will catch up over time. Rumors of mass failure have plagued both systems, from the red ring of death on the 360 to the burning down the house stories on the PS3. I've had my PS3 for a year and my house is still standing. I think that is more myth than fact. Don't know about the red ring of death. I don't have a 360, so I can't speak to what sets it apart from PS3 aside from exclusive games such as Halo, but here are the unique things I enjoy about my PS3:

- Blu Ray player that also upconverts regular DVD's
- Backwards compatibility - If you don't have PS2, this is obviously meaningless to you.
- Free online play
- Playstation store releases a couple games a month for $10 or less, including Stardust HD, one of the funnest time-wasters I've ever played

If you're going to buy a PS3, buy the 80GB for $499. The 40GB model for $399 has only two USB ports, and doesn't have backward compatibility.

360 obviously has the advantage of the amount of games currently available. PS3 is slowly getting there, but are still behind. I've had no issues with the online play...I've had a few disconnects, but my wireless router isn't all that good. Online is also free, and that was a huge bonus for me.

In terms of reliability, every system has it's bugs and issues. I've had no issues with my PS3...in fact, I've never had a bad PS2 or PS1 either (knock on wood). I've never heard of that. The PS3 has no real defect in its build. The biggest bug that popped up was fan noise on some of the post-launch consoles.

As far as the question. The 360 has better support for GH3. The PS3 can't play GH2 the way it was meant to be played while There's a specific build for the 360 along with a controller. The X-plorer is rather well regarded.

Overall I see the PS3 as being better than the 360 but in terms of games the PS3 is still catching up.

Think about how well the PS2 did last generation. They're STILL making games for that thing.

360 already won this generation. Not that it would be worthless to get a PS3 if you really want one, there will still be games and it does double as a Blue Ray player, but you will not have as good a selection of next gen games.

To the OP, if you already own a PC, buy a PS3, all of XBOX 360's "exclusives" eventually release on PC with everything that the XBOX Live idiots had to pay for. If you don't own a PC, buy a 360 now and a PS3 later. By mid 2008 the PS3 is going to truly show it's glory with Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy.

I have both. The PS3 is a great movie player. The 360 is a great game machine.

That being said, Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted look pretty sweet.

One thing not often argued: Achievements in the 360 are addictive to get. Yes, the number means nothing, but it's kinda cool to have a number next to your name to show your place in the realm of gaming.

Actually the PS3 is slowly coming into its own but thats exactly how it will continue, slowly. The 360 is pretty much the defacto target gaming system for developers. If you want to play games 2 years from now PS3 might be a good choice but if you want good games with a nice back library to keep you busy between new releases then 360 is the only choice.

That's pretty much it, buy what system plays the games you want to play. Currently, there's nothing on 360 that warrants a purchase, but there are several games on PS3 that do.

Developers have had over a year with 360's hardware and the system is damn near tweaked out. Once the developer's tap into the PS3 hardware you'll see the system's seperate graphically. Look at the first year of PS2 games and this past year...major difference. (same with all systems)

As far as Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD, there are subtle differences like BR supports 7.1 audi, HD does not.

The real reason im a 360 gamer: the architecture of the controller. some friends and i were discussing it earlier today just about how much better the 360 controller feels over the PS3 controller, especially for first person shooters. so break it down into game preference, try both and see what feels better (thats what the demo kiosks are for) so venture forth and do it.

I love my 360. Great exclusives, achievement points (you won't understand this at first, but believe me - you will), Xbox Live Arcade, great controllers. And once you hook it up online it gets a whole lot more fun, especially with a few friends, obviously. Xbox Live, even if you're not a gold subscriber, is a lot of fun just because you can go into your friends profiles and see what they're playing, where they're at in the game, what achievements they've unlocked...it's the little things that make the 360 so awesome. Like how I can be sitting playing a game of Heavy Weapon (XBLA) and talk over the headset to my friend who is mowing people down online in Halo. Xbox Live has a universal presence and is indescribably fun until you actually have a few people you know who you can compete with and check up on. Of course, you could just appear offline and avoid any distractions, which is good for those multi-hour sessions of Mass Effect or Oblivion. I'd have to recommend the 360 over the PS3, and unfortunately for me it's not even close.

The PS3 architecture is shit. The PS3 hardware is slightly better than the 360, but the 360 matches or exceeds the PS3 in almost every graphic process. Vertices per second, pixel fill rate, etc.

The games are going to look nearly the same on both systems for their entire lives. Any difference will likely swing in the 360's favor.

Also, again, he 360 is just easier to develope for. Having a one year head start didn't hurt either.

Both the 360 and PS3 had hardware issues and both are mostly resolved at this point.

It all comes down to games. If you really like the few exclusive games that the PS3 has/will have, get a PS3. If you want a blueray player with your console, get a PS3.

Aside from that, the 360 is a no brainer.

Who said I only played one....I said I only OWN one....I have played others...I only kept one...I bought Madden and it was bad on PS3...I played Warhawk and it was alright nothing great...Resistance was nothing spectacular IMO, so I sold it.. The online stinks because the interface stinks. I couldn't chat while playing The Show with the person i was playing because they didn't allow it...Which The Show was alright too btw, it was slow online most of the time too (and before its said, its not my connection at all...) You can chat with someone but if you want to start up a game then the chat has to end....XBL is a better service by far...

And I'm sorry that I have good job where I can buy a PS3 and let it sit there if I want...I don't know why that is an issue. I have repeatably said I own all 3 systems and I hope the PS3 starts to use its full potential....

Recommending a 360 or a PS3.....it depends upon what one is looking for. If you're the type of person who isn't going to game that much, and can be happy with just a handful of good games (that'll last you a while), the PS3 might be the way to go. The PS3 has the most potential of any of the consoles out there, but its problem is that it's not REALIZING that potential with regards to its software. There are painfully few exlusives for the PS3 (when compared to the 360), and release dates for games - even multi-platform games - are unforgivable. They're losing this generation's "war" handily to the 360 (and to a lesser extent, the Wii, but the Wii is for casual gamers who don't give a shit about things like graphics or having a console that's a total media package/system), and it's largely do to the fact that there just aren't that many games out there for the PS3 (unless you're willing to play PS2 games on it - but don't count on THAT happening if you're buying the 40 gig model without backwards compatibility). What's truly egregious is the fact that multi-platform titles for the PS3 are frequently delayed, meaning you can pick up the same game for the 360 WEEKS before the PS3 version drops. Also, the PS3 loses the multiplayer aspect of the next-generation consoles, and the PSN doesn't even have the dearth of downloadable games that the 360 has.

The 360 has the edge on software and multiplayer, easy. Graphically, it loses a bit to the PS3, but that's not a huge issue. It also doesn't have the PS3's blu-ray drive for next-gen DVDs (you have to purchase a HD player for it, that's another $150 or so). And, yes, the failure rate for the 360s is criminal (something like 30% at LEAST, although I've been told recent models, Fall 07 and later, are a bit more reliable).

So it's up to you. I'd say if you care about multiplayer, and want more of a selection of games, go with the 360, though be warned that your system could break down after a year or so. The PS3 would be the better alternative if it had more of a game selection, but that's a problem that has YET to be resolved, and it's a question mark as to whether that particular problem will be truly addressed in 2008.

I have all 3 of the new systems and out of all of them I play the 360 the most. There is not a huge difference in graphics as of this point and they do have better games. And if you like to play online then this is the easiest choice ever, go with XBOX. The PSN network is the worst piece of horse shit ever...
