I did a search and didn't find any general purpose Rock Band thread so I figured I'd start one. I don't own it nor will i probably buy it seeing I'd look like a complete asshole in my 40's sitting at home playing it.

What I did find impressive is this video of some dude playing Rushs' "Tom Sawyer" on expert level which is basically you playing Neal Pert's drumming note for note.

I played this game with my cousins on Xmas Day and holy crap is it fun! I don't even own a gaming console but this made me want to invest in one .... BIG time!

Got it for Christmas, love the shit out of it. Played through guitar on Medium, the new guitar is so easy to maneuver and play, I 5, if not 4 starred every song, the drums are tough on medium, and OK on easy, but still very fun. And, I haven't tryed out the vocals yet because I know I will look and sound like a tool. Also, the online, band, and downloadable features are great. Overall, one of my favorite games of the year.

Got it for X-Mas. Love it.
I have finished vocals on the hard level,and I working my way through the Drums on hard also.

The only problem I have is that I cannot keep a connection to the Playstation Network for online play or to check the leader boards. I am on a wireless connection, and I have changed every setting, including static IP, opening ports, and putting the PS3 in the DMZ of my router. Oddly, I can play old-school games online withough a problem. It probably has something to do with the amount of data coming through with Rockband, although I am getting a 70-80% wireless signal. :huh:

BTW - watch out for bass drum pedal breakage. There are a LOT of people who have cracked their pedal in half. Apparently, it is not made very well. I got a metal plate off of eBay, which reinforces the pedal. Worth every penny.

How does the game determine if you are being successful for the singing part? Does it recognize notes/tone etc?

that really is pretty impressive, even if it is just a game, they only missed about 7 or 8 notes the entire song.

from what ive witnessed and heard, its mostly about timing of singing the note and holding it for whatever duration, and hitting the pitch (somewhat). basically, the vocal track has lines which signify the length of the note and how high or low to sing it. if you can go up and down in pitch similar to the song, you should be in good shape. I'm not sure if it can pick up actual lyrics, but I haven't tried an expert vocal yet.

I just got a Mic stand so I can play the drums and sing at the same time...

As far as the vocals go, some songs its about timing (Beastie Boys Sabatoge)..since its really more rapping than singing. Other songs you got to be close to the actual pitch. If you play on Expert, you gotta be dead on.

My USB hub pretty much just shit out on me before it could get used. It's ok though, the cheapest hubs that come with a power supply go for about 20$.

I like Rockband and all, but GH is more for me.
Screw vocals, can't sing. The drums are sweet, but damn hard.
I don't know what it is, but if I play Rockband with the fender, I do OK. But if I use the Les Paul, I can't get above 85% even on medium, when I get 98% or more on GH3

I just got this tonight. I am awesome at the vocal part even though I can't sing for shit. I do ok with the guitar but it is way different than the GH3 Les Paul. However I really really suck at the drums.

I have also read that Harmonix is very good with warranty guitar returns and the new guitars are better, but can still develop a problem. Do some reading up on it to see what guitar you have

I was referring to paying the guitar. I have played real guitar for about 15 years, so it does make it somewhat easier I think.

guitar is way easier than on GH3. not sure if that is a good thing though. I tried the rubber band fix and so far it is working better. but it is still a pain I have to hit the strum bar pretty hard at times and other times I don't. I like singing but I SUCK HORIBBLY at it. I dunno. I really barely play. I got to medium on the drums the first night. I am around 80% when I play. Its such a good game. The funny thing is I know a girl who plays the drums but can loses miserably on easy.

I still play. I'm getting better on the drums. I've been working my way through medium and can play a couple on hard. I bought some Xymox Deadbeats sticks which helped alot. They deaden sound and give a nice bounce. I also added a metal plate I bought on Amazon to the bass pedal. It will keep it from breaking and makes it feel more solid, and adds traction.

While the DLC lately has sucked ass, (I'm lucky if there is one song a week I like) I've really enjoyed the Boston pack.

Last week I broke my bass pedal trying to get thru Mississippi Queen. SO much bass pedal in that! I got a replacement pedal from Block Head that works well.(Best Buy) It also comes with drum pad quieters and sticks. Great deal for $20!

Nothing wrong with playing on medium. I mainly play on medium. I just can't get my fingers to move nimbly enough on hard (well, I can play a lot on hard, just not everything) without smashing the wrong buttons. And fuck expert.

we worked on the PS2 and Wii version currently, and I am so sick of hearing it! I used to love playing it but overexposure has burned me out. We do have some programmers here who can play the drums better than anyone I have ever seen though. We have stacks of the new Fender style guitars that have gone bad. I prefer the XBOX guitar personally.
