ALBERT DESALVO
The Boston Strangler
Albert Desalvo was born on September 3rd 1931, the third of six children of Frank Desalvo, a plumber and labourer. Frank Desalvo was an alcoholic who beat his wife and children. Albert was just 7, when his father knocked out his mothers teeth then, one by one, bent his mothers fingers back until they snapped. The worst part of is childhood was when his father sold him and two fo his sisters to a farmer as slaves for a mere $9. When he was not brutilizing his chidren, Frank was teaching his kids how to steal. Albert progressed from shoplifting to burglary in a short time. His father would then bring home prostitutes and make them watch him having sex with them. Frank left home in 1939, he made no attempts to support his family, he was divorced in 1944, marrying again a year later.
A few weeks after leaving school in 1948, Albert enlisted into the army. In 1949, he was posted to Germany for 5yrs. In Frankfurt he met and later married Ingrid, the daughter of a middle class catholic family. He brought Ingrid home to America in 1954. He was then posted to Fort Dix, where his daughter Judy was born in 1955. Desalvo left the army in 1956 with an honourable discharge-a charge of sexual misconduct against a 9yr old girl. On Thursday 4th 1962, shortly before 7pm, Juris Slesers parked outside his mothers house, he knocked on the door but there was no answer. He got worried and resorted to kicking down the door. He found his mother lying dead on the floor with her legs wide apart. Her housecoat was left open revealing her naked from the shoulders down. The blue cord of her coat was knotted tightly around her throat and tied into a bow. She was 55yrs old.
On June 30th 1962, the body of 68yr old Nina Nichols was found in nearly the identical circumstances. She had been strangled with her own stockings, her housecoat was also left open revealing her nakedness.
Lberts 3rd victim was that of Helen Blake, a retired nurse aged 65yrs, was found in her apartment having endured the same trauma's as the last two victims. She was strangled with nylon stockings which had a bra looped through it. She had also been sexually assaulted, though not -----.
August 21st 1962, Ida Irga was found strangled in her apartment as with the other victims except for one grim variation, a pillow had been placed beneath her buttocks and her ankles had been locked into the vertical rungs of a chair. The body was left in a position so she would be noticed as soon as someone walked into the room, in what could be desribed as a mocking act of defiance. She was 75yrs old.
Victim number 4 was on the 30th August 1962. She was 67yr old Jane Sullivan. As with the other victims lived alone and easy prey. The time of death was estimated about ten days earlier with identical circumstances as the others.
December 5th 1962 saw Sophie Clark fall prey to Desalvo. She was killed in much the same way, her apartment had also been ransacked. The only differences was that the victim was only 20yrs old and she was black and did not live alone. She had also been -----.
Clark's mureder was followed on the 31st December, by that of Paricia Bissette, a 23yr old secretary. On May 6th 1963, 23yr old Beverly Samms was found dead. She had been strangled but was believed to have died from multiple stab wounds to the throat. Both the last two women had been -----.
The 8th September 1963, visualized the demise of Evelyn Corbin aged 58yrs old. She was again a single woman, strangled with her own stockings and left exposed to the first person to walk in.
While the American publis mourned the assasination of President J.F.K, the family of Joann Graff, aged 23 were mourning the death a family member. Joann was a shy, conservative woman.
Alberts final victim was that of 19yr old Mary Sullivan. It was on the 4th January 1964. This attack was the most horrific of the eleven strangulations. Mary was found propped up on her bed, her buttocks on a pillow, her back up against the headboard, her head was on her right shoulder, knees up, eyes were closed, there was, possibly semen dripping from her mouth and down to her right breast, her breasts and lower extremities were exposed, there was even a broomhandle inserted into her vagina, there was also semen stains on the blanket. Around her neck were her stockings, between her toes on her left foot were greeting cards saying 'Happy new year'.
For nine months after the murder of Mary Sullivan, Albert carried out some 300 sexual assaults spanning from Conneticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The attacker became known as the 'Green Man' because he always wore green work trousers when committing the crimes. On November 6th 1964, Albert was arrested. He was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for observation, then on December 10th returned to jail in Cambridge. While he was there, he showed disturbed behaviour and suicidal tendebcies, and was recommited to Bridgewater as mentally ill. When he was at Bridgewater, he began confessing to the stranglings. He shared a cell with George Nassar, a 33yr old violent criminal. Desalvo befriended him and bragged about his crimes.
Early November 1964, he was arrested for the sexual assault of a number of women in Massachusetts and Conneticut. Nassar asked to see his solicitor as the reward for infomation and a conviction of the killer was upto $110,000, his solicitor was Lee Baily. Desalvo and Baily met, where Desalvo confessed to the 11 known murders and another 2 killings that police didn't know about--Mary Brown, beaten and stabbed on March 9th 1963, and an 80yr old woman who died in Desalvo's arms when she had a heart-attack. He gave details of the murders and descriptions to his attacks which proved to be faultless. During the confessions, Desalvo told police how he went about the killings. He said that he never left home to go and kill someone, he would drive around the streets aimlessly until he got the urge to kill. When he got the urge, he would pick a house and ring the buzzers which had womens names on it. In many descriptions Desalvo would distance himself as if he was talking to someone else, he sometimes enjoyed talking about the killings, describing every movement in explicit detail and other times he wouldn't have the slightest idea why he had been arrested.
Desalvo was never able to explain why he had set out on his killing spree, or why he had stopped. Sometimes he would blame his wife, his upbringing, his overwhelming sexuality, even himself. When he talked about the killings, he often used the 3rd person, as if he were just an observer, rather than the man who carried out the murders.
On January 9th 1967, the green man trial opened at Middlesex County Superior Court. Desalvo was charged with ten counts of indecent assault and armed robbery. His plea was not guilty by virtue of insanity. The trial only lasted 9 days. Desalvo was found guilty and was commited to Bridgeater Hospital.
Desalvo escaped from hospital on February 24th 1967, with 2 other inmates, Frederick Irickson and george Harrison. The 3 men were recovered 36hrs later, Erickson and Harrison were found in a cocktail bar in Waltham. Desalvo walked into a clothing in Lynn, from where he phoned the Baily and gave himself up. Desalvo was then transfered to Walpole Prison, from where there is no escape, and where he would spend the rest of his life.
Six years later, the story of the Boston Strangler was to end as mysteriouslyas it had begun. On November 25th 1973, Albert Desalvo was found dead in his cell. He had been stabbed 6x's through his heart. His killer was never found.
