The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.

Mr. Ledger, a native of Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a novel by Larry McMurtry about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”

Agree 1000%, but as someone who has been there twice, I also know the pain someone has to be in in order to go that route. It's easy to sit here and second guess and say he should've manned up, but it's so hard to emerge from that dark place, especially if you're good at hiding it so that others don't know and can't help you. He was an actor - if he was that depressed, I'm sure he hid it well. I know I did.

Everyone suffers from depression, even rich people and celebrities. I will say I would much rather be rich and depressed than poor and depressed. In fact the only reason I am depressed is because of how fucking broke I am and the miserable fucking jobs I've had, so when a guy makes millions to act for a living and offs himself, if in fact that is what happened, its hard to feel sympathy for them. “Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there,” the Westboro Baptist announcement says.

Started 1955, the Topeka, Kan.-based church has conducted over 34,000 peaceful demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle, according to their Web site, GodHatesFags.com.

The organization runs various Web sites, including GodHatesAmerica.com and others that condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Muslims, Roman Catholics and Jews as well as certain nationalities, according to Wikipedia.

The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the church as a hate group and the organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League, according to its Wikipedia entry.

Phelps-Roper said the church group will also be picketing the Academy Awards this year.

Both the printed release and Phelps-Roper’s verbal diatribe about Ledger were rife with homophobic slurs. She said that those who call her and other members of Westboro Baptist Church bigots must also think God is a bigot.

“God hates fags,” she said. “The wrath of God has been revealed before the eyes of this nation with the death of Heath Ledger. … This nation worships the dead almost as much as they worship their filthy sex acts. America is doomed.”

I understand a little of everyone's opinion.

Everyone suffers from depression, even rich people and celebrities. I will say I would much rather be rich and depressed than poor and depressed. In fact the only reason I am depressed is because of how fucking broke I am and the miserable fucking jobs I've had, so when a guy makes millions to act for a living and offs himself, if in fact that is what happened, its hard to feel sympathy for them. Try living amongst us peons and deal with real life, you know, where you don't have personal masseuses and drivers and maids and people telling you how fucking brilliant you are on a daily basis. Where you have to worry if your gonna have enough cash to pay bills and eat food and possibly own a home one day. Fuckers wouldn't last a day.

And no matter how much you know that, you feel an emptiness that you can't share with anyone, because you know that no one can sympathise with the despair and isolation you feel, which is made worse every day because you can't share it with anyone. And you look in the mirror every morning, and you know you shouldn't feel the way you do, because you have no reason, you have a perfect life and a perfect job and anything you could ask for - and nothing matters. You feel yourself going through the motions of your life every day, sometimes wishing you DID have an excuse for the way you feel - wishing you WERE homeless or WERE terminally ill, or WERE extremely poor working the shit jobs - because at least then you would have something you could point to that would justify how you feel.

Thats depression. And the shit thing about it, is it transcends wealth and poverty, beauty and success.

I understand, really I do. Trust me, I grew up with two basket case broads and a father that was as far as Pluto in terms of emotional distance. I have endured the entire spectrum of lunacy. I understand all types of dysfunction and depression . I'm just sayin' - chedda makes the world bedda.

I guess I should say that for me, those types of feelings would disappear with cash in the bank. To me, everyone and life and God and the whole Universe can go screw, just give me cash money. But thats just me I guess.

I can say that as someone who's both had a ton of money (mid 6 figures in the bank) and been dead broke, I was much happier when I had money, and I had pretty much all the same personal problems at both times.

Though, my little sister's one of those super emotional artist types, and I can say that she does seem to let things affect her MUCH more than anyone I've ever known, man, woman, or child.

Also, one of the most depressed people I know as a whole in life in general is also one of the richest I know.
