I know there is a back ache thread out there some where, but I cannot find it, but I need some fucking help! B-b-b-b-b-b-big time.
I had some back pain a while back and it kinda went away. Now the shit has returned with a vengeance. This shit is like lightning in a bottle right down my left leg. It is bringing me down to my knees in the morning and sometimes after I have been @ my desk for a while! WTF!?!?!??!
Anyone out there have this problem?
What is the best fix?
My PCP says wait it out first it will go away, then steroids if that does not work. Steroids seems to be the answer to everything these days. My boss was given steroids for a fucking cough.
I have been looking up help online, acupuncture, cortisone, chiropractor are things that have been mentioned there.
Anyone, anyone?

Go to a Pain Management Specialist, at least this worked for me.
They did an epidural injection into my spine.
I felt absolutley no pain after my second shot.
Good Luck.

I'm pretty sure I have this going on right now too, only its my right leg and its not shooting pain, it just goes numb from my hip to about my knee. It happens at least once every night, and most days for at least part of the day.
I'm going to make an appointment with a chiropractor and probably my main doctor, but I sort of think mine is an aftereffect of an epidural when I gave birth. They put it in slightly to the side, so my right side was over-numb (to the point of hurting) and I could still feel some in my left leg. I already had back issues BEFORE the epidural - and they've been getting worse over the past few months :(
I would prefer no surgery if at all possible.

Sciatica can be a number of things, more often then not it's associated with a herniated disc. The doctor described it to me this way. Each disc is a jelly filled doughnut with a hole in the center. The nerves run straight down the center of the doughtnuts. Every disc has a soft spot, and inside each disc is a jelly filled center. The constant compression of each disc, either from normal wear and tear from being a bi-ped or trauma, causes the jelly in each disc to find the soft spot and escape in the exact same way you squeeze a tube of toothpaste the past will bulge out and press against the nerve causing serious pain and over time permanent nerve damage.
He told me that chiropractors can do more damage then good since there is a physical symptom that is causing the pressure against the nerve so when the chiropractors contorts or pushes, or prods, or whatever it is they do they are causing more damage to the discs. But your problem can range from moderate to severe. Cures can range from a shot of Cortisone to disc fusion in the absolute worse scenario. Not everyone is the same, but this doctor was a Navy surgeon for 30 years, and he knows his shit. but the first thing you have to do is have an MRI. Period. you gotta find out the exact problem. But dont walk around in pain bro, get it looked at.

I am dealing with the same thing as we speak except mine is runnung down my right leg especially around my hip.
Tried stretching and working out through it. Sitting standing, laying down, nothing stopped the pain.
Tried Advil and Aleeve, NOTHING.
Saw my buddy who is a pharmacist and he said to take 800mg of Motrin and it took most of the edge off.
He said the only thing is try to keep off it and take
NON Steroidal anti inflammatory.
He said it will ease the pain and keep the inflamation down so any sort of friction being caused by the swelling will subside.
Not sure if it will work long term, but for the first time in over a week, I am not howling in pain and should get a good night's sleep.

So........I went to the doctor today. I cannot believe they actually saw me the same day that I called. Now for the shit he said.
Of course he is telling me the same shit that he told me 8 weeks ago. He says; It has not gone away? Ok, here is what we are gonna do. Uh oh, your insurance does not cover a MRI until you do physical therapy. So it looks like I am gonna have to send you to PT and give you the normal sciatic nerve cocktail of drugs. And they are, Vicodin 500mg, Hydrocondone 500mg, and a steroid, Dexamethasone 0.75mg. I guess the insurance companies really know what is going on with my back along with everyone else. He did say that a Chiropractor is a good choice if the insurance will cover it. I was never a very big fan of someone manipulating my back.....hmmmmmmm.
I guess it is going to be PT for 6 weeks take the anti-inflammatory, and suck on the narcotics when I can. Hopefully the steroids won't make me retain water and make me fat as hell. I may even go buy an inversion table, for daily therapy.
I did find out the more I move around during the day the better it becomes.
Thanks for the words of wisdom baggers.

I have the same thing, man. It sucks. It started last July and hasn't gone away yet, but it's not half as bad now as it was then. Started out as back pain and then it moved to my left leg.
They had me do physical therapy for 6 weeks and then sent me for an MRI. I have 2 bulging discs that's causing it.
THE most important thing is to keep your back straight at all times and don't do any forward bending or heavy lifting. It puts strain on your lower back.
Excersizes:
http://www.spine-health.com/topics/conserv/Sciatica-Exercises/Exercises-Herniated-Disc.html
Do Figure 2 & 3, 3 times a day. You want to do a lot of backward bending(Fig 3) and that push-up looking thing (Fig 2) to make the discs go back to their normal shape. Vicodin and stuff like that doesn't help a pinched nerve. You need anti-inflammatories. Ibuprofen is the only thing that helps me. I pop them like M&Ms, about 800 mg at a time.

Then I am going to try and go back to bed with an ice pack on my hip.
Gonna head to the chiropractor in the AM and then visit a buddy o fmine who has vicatin..
Okay, I get severe back pain from an injury I got when I was in Middle school and it gets bad enough to do that shooting down the leg thing.
I've tried every pain reliever known to man and only one thing ever works.
Smoke a joint. If you don't have to pee in a cup and know a way you can get it safely, smoke a joint. It deadens the pain, relaxes the muscles and lets your mind get off it so you can sleep.
The fact that I can't get it legally for my pain pisses me off to no end.

For me, sciatic pain was being caused by muscle spasms surrounding the area where the sciatic nerve exits through the exterior of the glutes (no homo). Basically muscle spasms were inflaming the nerve and causing the shooting pain. I had a variety of treatments which fixed things completely. They included: Chiropractics, stretching, some mild traction (only a few treatments of that), moist heat, and finally deep tissue massage (no homo).

After sitting down for a while I iced it and took some more Motrin. Its amazing because 4 hours later it is starting up again. Its like an alarm clock.
What I am doing today is take 600 mg every four hours as opposed to 800 mg every 6-8 hours. I am hoping that it will carry into each dosage better so there is no "lapse".
Going to see chiropractor later this AM.

The reason you're limited on motrin or ibuprofin is that the body can only absorb and make use of so much over a period of time. the excess is just sent out through the urine. If you keep taking so much it will just kill your stomach and possibly your kidneys. get better meds

Sct pterson twins has so far. First she had to do physical therapy before the ins. would cover the MRI. Physical therapy did nothing for her. Next was the MRI, actually 3 MRI's. The first was normal one, next 2 were dye injections MRI. Her problem wasn't exactally siatica. don't remember what it was called. No real cure for her so far. They offered cortizone shot , but she won't do it because the injection has to be in the spine and she is scared. She had to quit her job as a craps dealer because of all the bending and stretching. For now her Dr. gave her 800 ibuprofin 3 times a day for 2 weeks which is helping.

He did a ultrasonic heat massage on the muscle area and stretching. Eh, it worked for a bit, today was about the same as a regular work day for me. I got a letter in the mail from the insurance company, and they told me I get 30 SESSIONS! whoopdy doooooo. No more pills for me THEY DON"T WORk.

SPT - the only other thing I can recommend is acupuncture. I was in a car accident a few years ago and had some nasty pains in my neck. The Korean that hit was an acupunturist and offered me free sessions. I told him to fuck off.
Well about 2 weeks later nothing was working, so I gave him a call and I walked out feeling a little better. I had three sessions and was good to go.
He then told me he could help me lose weight, so I paid him about $150 he put some beads behind my ear and I went to the Chinese buffet and ate til I puked.

Don't do the chiropractor. they're bullshit scam artists! If your pain is really severe, odds are the disc is herniated putting direct pressure on your nerves. if it was ruptured, it would actually release some of the pressure and therefore the pain. that's how it was for me.

Yeah, but don't go ruinin' it. Once a disk gets weak, it will have a chance of going back or getting worse. Proper back alignment is key and yes, a wallet can throw your back off. Make sure when you're driving that your lumbar is pushed all the way against the carseat - no slouching. If it comes back again, try going to a PT first to see if they can shrink it.
I had three disks blown, in my neck once. I had a pain like my arm was in an oven and someone taking a razorblade from my shulder to my wrist. Torture for three months straight before they used heat w/ stims. Plus I found out that I was starting signs of Carpal Tunnel. Thats why they couldn't figure out why I had numbness in my fingers and my hand hurt, because the nerves from the neck only go down to the wrist, not to the fingers. Took a couple of sessions a week for about two weeks. That was about 4 years ago and no reoccurrence.
Congrats on the pain relief - how about a Fresca, huh?

I just got my MRI report from my PCP. I will preface the report with him saying "You are still standing and is everything ok?"
Start of report:
Conus and L1-L2 : Normal
L2-L3 : Normal
L3-L4 : Normal
L4-L5 : There is a radial central annular tear without evidence of a disc herniation.
L5-S1 : This is the most significant level. there is a left-sided disk
herniation that is moderate to large in size. This impinges upon and
displaces posteriorly the exiting left S1 nerve root. Disk material
extends inferiorly virtually to the interior most aspect of S1. A
sequestered fragment cannot be excluded. There is a mild bilateral facet
joint hypertrophy.
Impression : Most significant level is at L5-S1 where there is a moderate to
marked focal disk herniation on the left and compromise of the exiting S1
nerve root. Disk material extends inferiorly almost to the inferior
aspect of S1 on the left and there may be a sequestered fragment.
End of report.
Now, my PCP said there is a 90% chance I will need surgery. Since the epidural I had two weeks ago tomorrow I feel GREAT! What the fuck do I do now? :arrrh:

I'd avoid surgery if you can. I had similar problems, though I never got to the MRI stage. I went to my doctor many times and he finally said to go to a chiropractor. He did an X-Ray and I had some compression. Over the course of about 6 weeks of sessions, hot/cold therapy and stretching at home we got it straightened out. I've been mostly pain free for over 2 years now. When I feel it start to bother me I've got stretches that I do that clear it right up. I think I'm supposed to do them every day and go to the chiropractor every few months but I don't.

Ok, for those that give a shit. I got and epidural into my lower back yesterday. You want to talk about FUCKING PAINFUL?! Holy S, since the stingray got me 15 years ago while surfing I have never felt pain like that before.
The doctor sticks a needle in your back and says does that hurt, I say no. Then he goes in again, once you feel the most excruciating pain in your life he says I found the spot, now I will go get the injection. I was like, "you better run muther fucker". He finished up and I was very uncomfortable for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Feels a lil better this morning, he said it may take up to 7 days to take, if it takes @ all...........
It probably won't take 7 days. The day you get it and the day after are the most painful. My surgeon used a small needle to numb the area, then used a type of x-ray machine while inserting the epidural needle, so that he didn't miss, and I didn't feel it until he released the liquid. That was painful!! My epidural lasted about a year.
Good luck.

That is basically what happened to me. Did you get another one after the year was up or did your body heal itself?

Go see an orthopedic doctor instead of a neurosurgeon that way he can fuck up and you get to feel that way for the rest of your life.

You'll probably need a laminectomy. I had one of those. Piece O' Caak. You're fortunate that the shot worked. I've had many shots, including facet joint injections and trigger point injections. Nothing helped. The disc replacement (see avatar) didn't help. Drugs help a little. 2 hour massage EVERY Tuesday night helps alot. (just got back) I also have a TENS unit that attaches to pads which shoot electricity into my spine.

What the fuck does that machine do? I have an inversion table. It looks like that thing just laid you back or something. my table does that for a one time payment of $99.00.

Inversion table has helped me some. They are pretty cheap now-and-days.
I messed up my back in an Aikido class years ago, and have had chronic lower back pain ever since. The pain shoots a bit into my left leg sometimes, and will come around to my side also, especially if I am tired.
A few years ago, I was putting up X-Mas lights, when my back actually "went out" on me. It got worse and worse over the next few hours until it started spasming. If I moved at all it would spasm to the point where it made me feel like I was being electrocuted. Worst pain I have ever felt. I cannot really even describe it very well, it was so bad. I could not get out of bed, and my GF and mom had to come get me out of bed, help me get dressed (fulfilling a hot, hot fantasy I have always had), and take me to the chiro. They had to walk me "vietnam POW style" into his office, as I was pretty much a gimp at that point. The chiro did heat and stim, which helped me - at least I could walk again. Since then it has not gone out, but it will get very stiff and I know that if I push it, it might go out again. I bought a home stim machine which I use sometimes. It helps some.
I went to the chiro last time it hurt bad, and he did some adjustments, and put me on this table which moves up and down, stretching your back out. It helped, but the "long term" $4K plan he wanted me to go on, did not sit well with me. I got an inversion table, and use it to get a good stretch. It has helped, but I cannot stretch for too long or it seems to make it worse. Stress and too little sleep cause problems too.
Sometimes I think about having surgery on it (if I am even eligible), but I am afraid of making it worse. I think it is something I will have to live with...

i dont know the particulars of your table, but besides using the force of gravity, the doctor is supposed to customize the amount of tension that is used to pull at your back based on your height/weight/etc. and its supposed to be done several times i guess. if your table has something that provides a certain amount of tension, instead of simply hanging upside down, then i guess you wouldnt need this. i dunno, ask your doc, worth a shot, maybe save some surgery

I fell at work back in 2003. Went airborne and landed on my right hip and my left wrist which was a fall with a twist. The deaf guy I was with turned around because he felt my vibration on the cement floor.
You could have a preexisting condition that manifests itself when you do things like picking someone out of a ditch.
I have even heard a story of a guy who threw his back out BRUSHING HIS TEETH!!! He obviously had a previous issue.

I'm glad I found this thread. I hurt my back a few years ago when I was 19 lifting a spool of heavy cable when I was an electrician. Ever since the between poor posture, being overweight my sciatic nerve has bothered me on and off. Nothing prepared me for the unimaginable pain the I felt when I woke up last month and literally could not get out of my bed. I woke up and went to get out of bed to go to work and was in the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I spent hours and hours rolling around on the bed writhing in pain thinking of a way to get up and avoid going to the ER. I had to call my wife to come home to bring me to the there. Finally I went and after a CT scan I was diagnosed with Sciatica and Lumbar Disc Disease.
Sciatica I knew about but the disc disease my PCP told me is a fancy way of saying that the normal aging and drying out of the spinal discs that happens in all people sometimes like in my case happens faster and they don't know why. It's been a month and still no certain treatment. I'm not in nearly as much pain as I was then but I'm still on Percocet, anti inflammatory (Skelaxin) and a muscle relaxer (Diclofenac). I'm scared to death of what the MRI results will say I will do anything I can to avoid surgery as most people would.
I don't know how your experiences are or were with this. I can't stand for more than a few mins at a time without the pain in my leg and ass being blinding. I walk with a cane for the most part. I lost feeling in the back of my left leg and only the left side of my left foot...which is odd. I'm fucking miserable.:mad4:

I got sciatica problems after my spinal for childbirth, then a few years later I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis (essentially my spine was slipping off my tailbone). I was barely able to walk, couldn't sleep, couldn't sit for long periods of time and when I would lie down I'd have to pull my knees to my chest. I had to walk with a cane and I was eating vicadin like tic tacs. I got surgery because I was afraid I'd become addicted to the meds and the chiro would take too long. I have a plate and some screws and virtually no pain. I do still experience numbness and that stupid feeling like water running down my leg (good thing it's the front of my leg or I'd think I was peeing myself all the time), but I have no regrets about the surgery and haven't had a pain pill since 3 days post op (4years ago). It's scary as hell to let someone slice you open and rearrange your spine, but it was worth it.

I have been lucky ass hell the last 4 months since my epidural in February. So far, I have had very few twinges of pain. I do not want any part of a knife in my back (not counting work).
