Per Eklund (Pictures) vs. Sam Stout (Pictures)
Round 1
An uneventful opening frame gets us started in Newcastle. Eklund looked for the takedown throughout the frame, with stout stuffing them all. Eklund landed a knee to the mid-section against the fencing before Stout was able to trip the Swede to the canvas. From the top position, Stout dropped some elbows down on Eklund's face. Sherdog.com sees the round 10-9 for Stout.

Round 2
More of the same in the second. Stout showed great takedown defense as Eklund struggled to get close to the Canadian kickboxer. Stout, again took the top position in a scramble, where he landed an elbow. Eklund attempted an armbar from the bottom, but Stout had none of it and stood up. At the end of the round, the English crowd showered the cage with boos after 10 boring minutes in the Octagon. 10-9 for Stout.

Round 3
Different round, same story. Even though nothing solid connected, Stout looked crisp with his striking and continued to defend the takedown. A pretty disappointing performance by both fighters. Sherdog.com sees the bout 30-27 for Stout, and two judges agree, awarding all three frames to Stout. A lone judge saw it 29-27 for the Canadian.

James Lee vs. Alessio Sakara (Pictures)
Round 1
Lee was successful with a takedown in the opening seconds but Sakara was able to hop back to his feet. Lee again scored a takedown. Sakara stood up, and with Lee holding on to a fight, Sakara delivered right hands to the head, which prompted referee Dan Miragliotta to step in at the 1:30 mark. Sakara is back in the win column with a technical knockout. It looked as if Lee was complaining of injury after the contest, possibly to his back.

Paul Kelly vs. Paul Taylor (Pictures)
Round 1
Taylor pulled guard and went for a guillotine, but Kelly was able to escape. Taylor elbowed the head from the bottom and went for another guillotine, but again Kelly was game. Kelly controlled the pace from the top position and took the first period on the strength of his ground-and-pound. 10-9 for Kelly.

Round 2
Good action in the second round. Taylor got a quick takedown and worked from Kelly's back, where he looked for a rear-naked choke. Kelly escaped and started to pound away from the top. Much like the first round, Taylor was active from the bottom with punches and elbows, as well as two Kimura attempts. But it was Kelly who controlled the position and outworked his opponent with punches from the top. A razor-thin 10-9 round for Kelly.

Round 3
The third round of a very competitive fight unfolded much like the first 10 minutes, with Kelly out-wrestling Taylor and striking from the top position on the ground. Taylor stayed active from the bottom and landed some decent shots, but it was not enough to take any rounds. Sherdog.com and all three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Paul Kelly.

Antoni Hardonk (Pictures) vs. Colin Robinson
Round 1
The evening's final preliminary bout ends quickly in just 17 seconds. Hardonk came out with two hard knees to the body, two leg kicks, two jabs and the fight is called. The second stiff jab dazed Robinson, forcing referee Mario Yamasaki to halt the contest.

Methinks Gonzaga was an overrated flash-in-the-pan.

One lucky kick against Cro-Cop (who I'm sure wishes he could get a rematch with him to "clear his name").

Randy tossed Gonzaga around too. Down the pile for that one.

OK - here we go - Penn v Stevenson.

I don't know, I think till that incidental headbutt Gonzaga didn't look that bad against Couture. He beat some OK fighters to lead up to the Cro Cop fight also. Werdum's now beat him the same way twice though.

Yeah, but the heavyweight field is so deep - that Gonzaga has to be moved down in the pecking order.

Gonzaga has alot of skill, but his will is easily broken. When Randy did it to him, thats one thing, but for Werdum to do it, it proves the point. it also looks a bit like Werdum has Gonzaga's number a bit.

Sherk is still gona take whatever he wants to take. He'll just maker sure he cycles off properly this time. Hes not going to stop now

you all know my position on this. its pathetic that sherk is stripped for using steroids, yet does the color for this fight, then gets a shot immediately. its classless, its bad for the sport. its cronyism, dana white is no better than don king or any of the others hes criticized over the years

i agree with most of your post but don king is the main reason people are shying away from boxing. don king gets the most credit for ruining boxing. sherk was dominating opponents he was gonna get a shot right away. they could have givin him a warm up fight but what's the point

it wasnt so much Don King but the circus show tyson turned into. King was a part of that. When Sportscenter finally starts covering mma, and they have to read off a quote from dana white about "bitch slapping" Randy Coutures agent, and the anchors look at each other and roll their eyes, your seeing the sport turn into a circus in its infancy. its unnecessary and not good for the sport long term. neither is this sherk bullshit. rules matter if you want to be recognized as a mainstream sport and not just a mainstream attraction

competition IS the business. once it stops looking like honest competition, public interest erodes

I agree with you but until they start getting recognized zuffa won't do anything to shut white up. if they sterted taking heat for whites mouth then you'll see him get gagged. I just get annoyed at all the boxing coverage when in america mma has past it(let's start this arguement again:D )

but it hasnt. we both know this. hbo set the new ppv record in 07. and in the grand scheme of things, neither get a whole lot of coverage. its a football/baseball country now. even the nba and nhl barely get a taste at this point

while ufc ppv have declined. they are filling up arenas but taking a beating on these UK shows which dana had to admit last week. spike ratings, rampage hendo aside, declined. thats why dana is trying to get ufc on cbs, which he says will happen this year

but when both sports consistently put on good events, the public support is there

I only WISH I was able to see this fight. I'm at work right now, and I got a request for BJ Penn. Didn't even realize there was a fight tonight due to being all mentally into superbowl prep around here. Anyhow, I go to get the photo, and GOD DMAN!!! I have NEVER seen someone so messed up from a fight. I can't wait to see this in the next couple days.

all i know is that mma is getting bigger and bigger and boxing is losing more and more fans. a shitload of people i personally know who used to watch boxing are now mma fans and can care less about boxing. i used to be a fan i'm just bored with it as many people are. and mma has new fans everyday. if you put all th boxing hwt champs in a line up most people would only know klitchko. now if you do the same with the ufc champs... you see my point. i only comment on what i know and in my experience with friends guys i work with and new people i meet mma has taken over

but its not. this is hilarious. you are listening to the spike commercials about the "fastest growing sport" BS even people on sherdog realize is its BS. spike ratings have been in decline, for some time now. thats why dana is so desperately trying to find another outlet for the ufc. ppv numbers are also greatly down from 06 and 05. TUF barely gets above a 1 share

boxings ppv numbers have shot up, considerably. its filling 30 K seats in the US and 50 K seats in the UK, the same market Zuffa is taking a beating in. like most things, demographics have changed though, in the country, and boxings fanbase. so its not surprising that your friends dont watch it. that doesnt describe the total picture in this country.

the numbers from 07 do not lie. Boxing had a massive year. they were even watching hatton mayweather live at the UFC event that night.

both sports are doing just fine. its something you'll have to live with

The fact is two fighters past their prime tonight will probably make more than the UFC event. I know UFC being tape delayed will have something to do with that, but I'm sure RJJ/Tito would have won out anyway.

well i haven't met any of these people who still think boxing is relevent. i haven't heard anyone talking about the boxing ppv from last night, but i do always hear about the last ufc or did you see that wec fight. if they are doing so well why'd they have to take a full page add out in the post for the past month? you barely see any advertising for ufc. a few billboards but barely any media coverage. no espn sportscenter hyping up the fight for weeks. . and boxing has been around for 100yrs and is still holding on to fans for 20+ years while the ufc is barely over 10 yrs old and have a lot of new fans(within the last 3 yrs) cause of TUF.so Well just have to agree to disagree

very inaccurate stuff man. boxing doesnt put on nearly the advertising that UFC does, which is UFC's strength not weakness. more commercials...scratch that. ufc puts on commercials. boxing barely does except for a few fights every year. other than that, nothing. and ESPN barely talks about boxing. sportscenter doesnt hype anything, except for a tyson scandal or a dlh fight. I dont know where you came up with that one.

they advertise on spike the same channel where they have there show. so it make sense. they don't put out full page ads for a month in argueably the biggest paper in nyc. and have columns written about it in the news and posts all week leading up to the fight. so whatever. boxing is boring. you can put up all the stats you want but from personal experience , mainly job sites all over the city, the concensus is boxing is dead. and anyway ufc doesn't advertise there ppv numbers the post couldn't get them so i don't know how you did...i'm just sayin

yeah most agree with that. UFC's organization and promotion really made the boxing promoters wake up and work again before it was too late. far from killing it, mma has arguably saved boxing. and both will continue to do well
