What's the white dome you see on top cop cars some times? I always thought it was some sort of body heat, infra red thing they could use to see people in the dark or something.

Anyone?

Probably some sort of antenna.

How else do you expect it to turn into a briefcase?

It's a tracking system. I'm not sure if its Sat or Cell Phone. It's so the company can keep track of shipments in real time and to make sure drivers are not making detours during their routes.

how big is it ? if its about 3-4" in diameter with a flat top and about 1" tall its the antenna for there computer, or there GPS antenna

It's where they store the invisishield - you know how when you're speeding and a cop seems to come out of nowhere? They've been under the invisishield all along

damn, I crack myself up

The ones I've seen are about the size of a Soccer ball and they have sort of tinted lens panels on them, hence me thinking it was some sort of IR system

White dome? I haven't seen the white ones but the black dome things that are about five inches wide are GPS antennas for their cars.

They also have small black post-like antennas for newer UHF/VHF radios instead of those long wire antennas.

I'm kind of disappointed to hear all the guesses pointing to GPS antennas... I thought it was some sort of IR/Body Heat tracking shit

They have shit that large? I haven't seen those. Back in the late 90s I saw the old-school GPS antennas that were little balls on post that were mounted on the trunks but I haven;t seen those soccer ball-sized hunks of shit with lens panels.

I saw an article online before about cops in certain areas trial testing new equipment that was a digital Infrared camera system that will read the license plate info automatically and instantly retrieve data without having to call it in. They are also supposed to identify suspects.

That's not even where I was going with the line. Truth be told,I didn't even notice your screen name before I replied. I was trying to set someone up for the obvious line.

But that was a good reply anyhow

Found it:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071124193721AAeERql

I remember them being white, though, and why would a GPS device have lens panels on it? I mean, my Blackberry has GPS on it and it's barely a 1/4" little window... Seems crazy for how big it is that's all it is

My Google-Fu is strong when annoyed

Haha, we're talking about cop cars, not prop cars from Crocodile Dundee

"What tribe you from mate?"

"Tribe?! I ain't from no damn tribe!"

The only film in history of man kind that Sgt. Al Powell didn't play a cop.

Ok, now I want to find a picture of the things I saw... I've looked at pics about the GPS "domes" you guys are talking about and they don't look near as technologically advanced as the ones I'm talking about.

Maybe I just dreamed this shit and it replaced reality in my memory... Who the fuck knows

the more i think about it they might be either laser or radar guns, there's been issues with hand held radar guns over the years so i wouldn't doubt that they are fixed mounting the units in a rotating turret with a built in camera

PoPo here have the radar units mounted on the side of the cars...just above the driver side rear door if I remember correctly. I don't think they are using laser yet. At least I haven't gotten a hit on my laser/radar detector.

You're probably exactly right. That would explain the IR lens panels and the unobstructed 360 view and everything.

qualcomm. they have some of those on big trucking companies trucks, they can track the bone heads they hire that are too dumb to go where they are supposed to go.
