for this particular race (and other races at Daytona and Talladega, the two super-speedways), the strategy is to find other cars that your car drafts well with, and to position yourself away from the middle of the back. You'll get guys who push hard to stay up front, and guys who will drop to the back in hopes that they'll avoid a huge wreck (which almost always happens and takes out 10-20 cars). It's a lot more of a chess match than it looks. When they pit, who they pit with (you could lose the draft if you pit by yourself) and where their pit stalls are relative to other teams are also strategy aspects.

Drafting I understand..we use it in swimming..so there are cars that are better to draft behind than others? Do they differ that much?

Now that they've switched to this new car (The "Car of Tomorrow") which has the huge wing on the back and the splitter on the front, that may not be as big of a factor. In the past, some teams would set their cars aerodynamics to lineup with their teammates cars and they'd sometimes have an advantage if they could get lined up in a row. Sometimes cars of the same make (Chevy, Toyota, Ford, Dodge) will work better with each other than they will with cars of a different make.

I was a naysayer for many years. I grew up in southern california, skateboarded, listened to punk rock my whole life...not your stereotypical nascar fan. When I was in Charlotte one year, Microsoft hooked us up with tix for the race. The only reason I went was because you can bring your own beer in. By the end of the first lap, I was hooked.

You can't really gauge the speed when you're watching it on tv because the camera is moving with the cars. When you're sitting there stationary, it really sinks in how fast and loud and close together they truly are, and it is awesome. Going to a non-short track race would be the best way to test the waters, and it adds to the entertainment when you watch it on tv because you know how fast they're going.

We go to richmond twice a year. Just the people watching opportunity is worth the price of the ticket.

This.

I can think of 38 guys(+10 who didnt even make the race) who would have liked your 4th place finish, Kyle.

Fucking A, I HATE no neck Newman. Would have loved to have seen Busch and that #2 win. Fuck Newman, piece of shit.

Can't believe my whole life watching NASCAR that Penske's 1st superspeedway win wasn't Rusty.

I actually went to college with Newman and I always remembered this article. it was the first i had heard of him, although i was probably in some of the big freshman engineering lectures with him.

I choose to believe that the midget was really a Newman crew member inside of the engine, fixing stuff during the race.
