For my money, the best burger I ever had was at Burger Boys of Brooklyn, in the old Fulton Fish Market at South Street Seaport. Unfortunately, the market, and its second floor food court, are both gone now.

Yeah it's the typical "too cool for the room" list comprised mostly of sandwiches trying to be fancier then actually good and then they balance it out with a few fast food sandwiches to try and give the "every man" feel. Anyone who has ever had an old italian hoagie from Sarcone's deli knows what the best sandwich is.

Italian Beef
Al’s #1 Italian Beef, Chicago

The stockyard special: thinly sliced beef on bread from the 122-year-old Gonella bakery, enhanced by giardiniera, a fermented vegetable relish made with hot peppers and celery. You could buy the ingredients and study the method, but it ain’t gonna taste like Al’s. (1079 West Taylor Street; 312-226-4017)

whole heartedly disagree. als is good but no one beats mr.beef

A pipe’s length of kielbasa is wrapped in a bun and mounded with french fries, then dressed with coleslaw and barbecue sauce.

blasphemy

I want to go to that Prismanti's again...it was good.

My Favorite though is the Turkey, Egg, and Cheese on a Salt Bagel with mayo from Bagels International in Bradley Beach..it will take ten years off your life ..but worth it for taste and a hangover helper.

Nice to see a couple of Seattle places represented. I'm dying to try that cuban meat sandwich. Have to mention, if you are in the Bellevue area, specifically south Bellevue near the Factoria neighborhood, it's worth your time to look up a sandwich shop called Goodfellas. The Pastrami is piled thick an high. All the sandwiches there are great, though.

Love me a Pastrami on sourdough with red onions, Bacon and Mayo.....Heaven.

good day sir

Gotta agree with you on this one, Fez Man.

But DAMN, some of those sandwiches look good....

This entry should be noted:
Roast Pork with Provolone

John’s Roast Pork, Philadelphia

Although the area looks like a good place to dump a body, when John’s opened in 1930 the shipyards were bustling, and the place still keeps day-laborer’s hours: 6:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The cheesesteak is the best in town, but your first time, get Philadelphia’s sleeper signature sandwich, the roast pork with shards of provolone. Only the large size comes on a seeded roll from Carangi Bakery, the perfect texture to absorb the juices without falling apart. The meat and cheese meld together while retaining flavor and texture -- molecular gastronomy at its finest. (14 East Snyder Avenue; 215-463-1951) --Francine Maroukian

And Hogies are kind of a dime a dozen. I can think of a half dozen places off the top of my head that serves a good hogie.

This list left off three great sandwiches, courtesy of the Rutgers Grease Trucks.

FAT DARRELL: Two chicken fingers, two mozzarella sticks, french fries and marinara sauce.

FAT PHILLY: Two chicken fingers, cheesesteak, gyro meat, two mozzarella sticks, white and red sauces, lettuce and tomato.

FAT CAT (the original): Two cheeseburgers, fries, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo.

There's a place on Hylan blvd in Staten Island called Royal Cucina that makes this hero on their own fresh bread that only has one layer of thinly sliced soppresata of some kind and a thin layer of some kind of sharp imported French cheese thats sort of like a provolone but with much more taste. It's unbelievably good, they charge 12 bucks for it.

The Sandwich Kings of Astoria stick to a simple formula: Use great ingredients and a lot of them. Know what you want to order when it’s your turn and you’ll have a great experience -- that’ll be the Bomb, an Italian with nine kinds of meat. (33-12 Twenty-third Avenue; 718-278-9240)

Where is Sarcone's? I've heard about it before.

Sarcone's is the best bread bakery in Philadelphia hands down. They are located in South Philly, 758 S. 9th St. The bread makes the best hoagies possible. They recently updated to a new website and it seems they've gotten into the franchise game offering deli franchises, etc. The South Philly bakery is the gold fucking standard for bread.

Since it's near midnight and I ain't going out for fixin's, I'm stuck with grilled cheese. At least it's REAL American Cheese (Land O' Lakes yellow, thank you very much, not individually wrapped singles of "American Pasteurized Process American Cheese Food") and decent mass-market rye bread (Pepperidge Farm seeded).

...and I can't help but notice another grave omission... Pat's Hubba Hubba, Portchester, NY. Haven't been there in a decade but I can still remember their terribly greasy, tasty, awful-for-you post-beering sammiches.

I understand it's under new ownership now, with a name change and all (now just "Hubba Hubba", maybe?), but I hope they're holding up their end of the legacy.

WG Shuckers in Savannah, Ga had a great sandwich. The Super Chicken. Italian bread buttered and lightly toasted. My favorite artery-clogger came from a deli on New Highway in Farmingdale. I think it was called a Manhattan hero, but that was probably just a name the deli came up with - no idea if it might be called something else in other places. It was hot roast beef, bacon and melted mozzarella cheese, on half-foot toasted garlic bread. It probably took a few months off my life, but it was worth it.
