- According to data compiled by Nielson Media Research, last night's edition of WWE SmackDown did a 2.6 fast national broadcast rating. We will have the final number next week.

- Several people within Ring of Honor and TNA are said to be dumbfounded as to why the official WWE website is including news on their promotions. No one is complaining about the free promotion, but everyone is saying that it is definitely a weird move by WWE.

- WWE will break ground this summer for their new $70-million, 39,000 square foot television studio in Connecticut. This announcement comes weeks after spending $20 million for the upgrade to High Definition.

As JD mentioned Jericho is writing a new book--
- The sequel to Chris Jericho's "A Lion's Tale" will be titled "Undisputed Attitude" and will be published by Grand Central Publishing. According to a recent column written by Chris, the book will be released in the fall of 2009.

John Cena got some major heat from veteran wrestlers in the WWE locker room for his negative comments about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in an interview with The Sun in the UK. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that several people are real upset about Cena's strong words.

"At one point he loved wrestling and wanted to do this all his life. So explain to me why he can't come back. Simply put it's because he wants to be an actor and there's nothing wrong with that." Cena said. "He's very good and very successful. Associating with sports entertainment doesn't do much for his acting career. I get it. Just don't f*** me around and tell me that you love this. That's the only thing that gets me really p***ed off. Our fan base have so much admiration for him, he's got to respect that. He doesn't give anything back."

It's worth noting that these comments were made prior to The Rock agreeing to appear at the 2008 WWE Hall Of Fame ceremony, but The Sun only released them recently.

- Matt Hardy returned to WWE tonight during an angle with MVP at the SmackDown/ECW house show at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. According to a few live reports, MVP retained his United States Heavyweight Championship in a match against Jimmy Wang Yang.

Hardy has been out of action since undergoing emergency appendectomy surgery in November. He was last seen on camera December 29th during an angle on RAW with Randy Orton.

- As expected, Maria's Playboy photos have leaked on the Internet.

Although he is now back on form, Chris Jericho briefly injured his neck at the WWE house show in Cape Girardeau, MO. He reportedly went for the Lionsault, but Mr Kennedy was in a bad position causing Y2J to land on his head/neck.

The ref signaled to end the match, but Jericho continued, winning the match with a weak Walls Of Jericho. He was eventually helped backstage.

Despite initial worry, Chris was back in action last night with no lasting injuries.

Dory Funk, Jr. has retired from active competition.

The Mark Coleman vs. Brock Lesnar UFC fight this August will be held in Minnesota, which of of course is the hometown of Lesnar. Brock and Rena 'Sable' Mero (who are married) currently reside there.

Batista was booed out of the building at the UFC PPV this weekend. He shrugged and smiled it off.

Paul Heyman has an article up on The Sun website where he talks about how when he was in junior high, he conned Vince McMahon's father into giving him a photographer pass for Madison Square Garden.

In a story in the New York Times about Vince McMahon, Linda McMahon calls him a "marshmallow, a real pushover, a total sweetheart."

-- In a recent interview Kurt Angle spoke on the amateur wrestling match that he and Brock Lesnar had backstage at a WWE show in Fargo, ND in 2003. He says that he took down Lesnar very easily. Lesnar’s version of the story says that Lesnar pinned Angle in 30 seconds and the size difference was just too much. Internet legend has it that Angle owned him, but those backstage who actually saw it say that it was pretty close with Angle only having maybe a slight edge.

-- Several Spike TV executives are in attendance at the recent TNA house show in New York City, and it was said to be an eye-opening experience for them about the potential of taking TNA on the road more often rather than always running out of Universal Studios.

-- Although his actual contract signing hasn’t been confirmed, everyone is acting like Samoa Joe and TNA have agreed to a long-term commitment. It’s expected that Joe will be elevated to a whole new level starting at the Lockdown PPV with TNA now confident that Joe is with them for the long haul.

Show will take on a boxer in an exhibition where he will aim to send “Money” �" and the world �" a message. How will Mayweather react to Big Show’s big statement?

John Cena was laid out by Mr. Kennedy’s Mic Check at the end of Raw as Triple H looked on. The Game made no effort to save the Chain Gang Commander, despite their successfully working together to defeat WWE Champion Randy Orton and Kennedy in tag action. There is reportedly a new policy within WWE where they give false return dates for wrestlers in order for it to appear more of a surprise when they come back early like John Cena. It is very likely that Rey Mysterio will come back earlier than WWE have reported.

COLUMN: OS #21 - John Cena's Heel Turn

Hey WZ readers. Thanks, once again, for reading Offbeat Shenanigans. I'd like to wish a speedy recovery to the man whose promo named this column, Lance Storm. Lance underwent a double knee scope two weeks ago, on February 21. Hope you're feeling better, Lance!

I’d also like to remind everyone that I’m still looking for your votes for the Best Moments in Wrestling History. At the end of this article, I’ll give more details as to how you can vote.

And now, for those of you who might be wondering, no, John Cena is not turning heel. At least, not in this writer’s humble opinion. No, it’s not some kind of “inside” information I have. It’s simply an educated guess and because, frankly, I think WWE would be foolish to turn Cena heel at this point.

I realize that I’m in the minority on this point, when it comes to the internet wrestling community. I also make this argument as someone who, as recently as a few months ago, was begging for Cena to turn heel. While I definitely can’t disagree on the point of Cena becoming stale, nor with the amount of boo’s he’s received, I also can’t condone a turn at this time. Why? Well, it’s because of those very crowd reactions, and it’s also simple math.

50% + 50% = 100%.
60% + 40% = 100%.
25% + 75%, still, = 100.

"Okay, Kev, but what are you trying to prove?" Ah, hypothetical reader, that’s a very good question. These are possible crowd reactions - applause and jeers, respectively - which John Cena might and probably has received. Now notice that, in every case, it’s a 100% reaction. That’s right, reader. Because, whether people are cheering or booing, virtually everyone is reacting to John Cena.

Little kids and younger teens love him and buy his merchandise. Many female fans perch in the bushes outside his beautiful home (a point I’ll address more a bit later in this article). The primary demographic of WWE, as well as this site, largely boo’s the crap out of him. Yes, Cena has his male fans in the 18-45 demographic, and they’re vocal and supportive. Everyone who’s not a fan is equally supportive in at least reacting to his work.

I’ll give you an example. I attended SummerSlam 2006 at the venue formerly named “the Boston Garden.” There were three high profile matches on that card. Hulk Hogan made his return to WWE to face off against Randy Orton. DX took on Vince and Shane McMahon. And John Cena challenged Edge for the WWE title. Guess which match, by and far, got the biggest reaction.

Cena’s fans and hometown supporters rallied for him that night, and they made quite a lot of noise. The other 50% of the crowd were not so much in favor of Edge as against Cena. It was one of the most raucous and intense crowd reactions I’ve heard at a live event and, even though I wasn’t originally too interested in the match, by the end, I was popping up off my seat.

Crowd reactions really can do that much for the product. They keep fans tuning in, buying tickets, and making a lot of noise at televised events which, in turn, enhances the product. How many times have you watched an event that was soured by a lousy, semi-interested crowd? I’ve had that happen in person, and I’m from Philadelphia, where the crowd is always supposed to be intense. With that said, I’ve never seen a crowd yawn through a John Cena match.

Yes, there are things to criticize about Cena. He’s been doing the same shtick for a few years, and many argue that he’s only evolved to a certain extent. But he might just be the WWE’s biggest hope for mainstream crossover. I can tell you that I’ve known a few young women who tune in to WWE programming specifically to see John Cena. They support the shows, and come to like much of the rest of the product. This is all due to Cena’s chiseled good looks. What? Don’t look at me like that! He’s a handsome man! And it’s shown in the fact that girls go ga-ga for him.

“Cena’s not a good wrestler, Kev.” What, Hypotheticus? Compared to who? Cena’s not the greatest scientific wrestler in the history of the game, but there have been far, far less qualified wrestlers, technically speaking, to hold the title he carries. I also hear the argument that he’s a “routine” wrestler, using a lot of the same moves every match. What, you mean like Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, and Bret Hart? I think you’ll see what a piss-poor argument that is.

Most importantly, let’s look at what might happen to Cena’s ballistic crowd reactions if he were to be turned heel. The way I see it, there are a couple possibilities. Remember that Cena was turned face to begin with because many of the very fans who hate him now cheered him back in 2004. He could very well just be turned face again, based on crowd reactions, if he were turned heel. Why go to the trouble?

The more likely possibility, in my opinion, is that Cena’s crowd reactions would, overall, weaken. Yes, he’d earn instant heat with most of the young fans who cheer him now. Let’s say that’s 30% of the audience. The girls would likely still cheer for him. They’re 20%. Meanwhile, what would happen to the guys who boo him now? There’s very little chance that they’d all suddenly rally behind Cena if he were a heel. In fact, I think many would begin to lose interest.

Let’s say that the remaining 50% of the crowd were, originally, 35% Cena critics and 15% Cena adult, male fans. Of the 15% fans, 5% might turn on him because his character would change a little. Maybe 15% would begin to cheer him on, seeing as he’s talented and might be able to win them over with his heel tactics.

30% + 20% + 5% + 15% = 70%
That means 3 out of fans, who, before, were waiting to see what happened in every Cena match, could now care less.

In a clever marketing technique WWE are editing the Great Khali's losses and making him look stronger on Indian broadcasts, in order to capitalize on their growing popularity in the country.

Khali is seen as a national treasure and market stalls, shops and other outlets are making a killing selling Khali merchandise. He is a tremendous hit amongst children who imitate his matches at school.

According to once source Indian's still see wrestling as real in most cases, and they have huge pride in Khali's domination in the WWE.

From a business standpoint Khali is a big asset to WWE and practically drives its popularity in India, so no matter how boring he may become to US fans, he won't be let go anytime soon.

With WWE's recent plan to expand in to China it would be interesting to see if they hire any Chinese stars and do a similar thing.

There are currently no reports of this type of thing happening to anyone else but Khali.

Khali Made To Look Strong In Home Country Through Editing

Look I can understand the WWE's thinking on this. However they couldn't find an actual Indian wrestler, who could do something in the ring and on the mic, to promote in India. Instead of using a fucking extra from a bad Adam Sandler movie.
