The clock has run out on The Score sports yakkers Scott Zolak and Andy Gresh, who were kicked off WSKO and replaced by a flick-a-switch Oldies format at the money-strapped Providence station.
“It was time to move on to bigger and better things,” said Zo, the ex-Patriots [team stats] back-up QB who co-hosted the 9 a.m.-to-noon yakfest for four years. “We were kind of stuck in the mud anyway.”
’SKO’s owner, Citadel Broadcasting, the nation’s third-largest broadcasting company, reported fourth-quarter net revenues of $245.5 million and a net loss of $848 million. Hence, the new cheap, canned format.
Zolak, who does the Pats pregame and postgame shows for WBCN [website]-FM and WBZ-TV during the season and did play-by-play for Navy football, has his sights set on Boston.
“That’s where the action is,” he said, refusing to discuss his options. “But I’ve got to lay low for a while.”
Not laying low is the rumor mill, which is buzzing with possible employment scenarios for the boys.
Gresh, who re-signed a deal with WSKO this year, does a Saturday show on ESPN Radio. Just hours after being whacked he was in Bristol, Conn. to talk about expanding his role.
“I’m in the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. slot on Saturday when men are out doing their ‘honey do’ lists,” Andy told the Track. “It’s a good time slot. They’ve obviously made an investment in me and think I can handle the job.”
And then there’s Andy’s ubiquitous appearances on Comcast SportsNet, which could also expand.
As for Zo, there has been some buzz that perhaps he’ll do some fill-in on the Patriots broadcasts for color man Gino Cappelletti, who reportedly is contemplating some sort of semi-retirement.
Another scenario being bandied about has ’BCN tanking morning morons “Opie & Anthony” (not to mention most of its rock format), moving afternoon men “Toucher & Rich” into their slot and sliding “Gresh and Zo” into afternoon drive. Against WEEI’s “The Big Show???”
“I haven’t specifically heard that,” said Gresh. “’BCN’s been great to Zo and me and Gary Tanguay during the Patriots season, but to tank ‘Opie and Anthony?’ That’s a bigger decision that would come down from New York. But my ears are open.”
As always, do stay tuned . . . .
